Posted - Jun 14 2008 : 9:10:25 PM Has anyone read the hillbilly housewife blog? I discovered it about 6 months ago and it has completely revolutionized my cooking and how I think about storing and buying food. I would love to hear if anyone else enjoys it as well...if you havent been there, go! simple inexpensive recipes, and pantry storage for lean times. (as an artist I have some of those for sure!)

Posted - Jun 15 2008 : 8:06:22 PM When I first went to the website they had a feature on how there are so many bread machines cheap at thrift stores but they usually don't have the instruction manual plus to make sure it has the little paddle on the bottom--sometimes they are missing. They had printed a "universal" manual. So I went to the thrift store found a bread machine WITH the paddle used their instruction guide and have produced wonderful bread. JoAnn |

Posted - Jun 15 2008 : 7:11:51 PM I really only use her instant soup mixes--those are great for me at the office, especially on those days that I am just not interested in food, but need something. ...I'm not at all trying to sound like a food snob, but not alot on her budget menus sounded appetizing to me. I like the ideas of the budget menu, but I can honestly say that there were very few things on the actual list that I utilize while cooking. That's just me, though. I cook for a finicky husband who prefers fresh items, and lots of chicken and fish, as do I.
I haven't had a lot of time to really read her site, but I'm sure there are some more great ideas there.

I have really made good use of her pantry recipes. Especially the pizza recipe. We used to only have pizza when I had yeast bread going which is only 3 times a month or so, (should be more) but now with her simple recipe I can make pizza for lunch even for my son! I usually substitute at least half wheat flour for white but it still tastes great and its a great treat. I now keep dried tomato powder, dried carrot, dried celery and dried onions in bulk sizes on hand in the winter for stews and soups. many I can dry from my garden but I do still buy some. Freeze dried broccoli is great for soups and so handy to take along camping. I love to make up dried soup mixes which my son can easily reconstitute on his own and I know that it isnt full of junk like some of the prepackaged stuff. Thank you Hillbilly housewife!

Posted - Jun 15 2008 : 08:38:08 AM Thank you Denise! that is a neat website...I sent it along to my daughter in Iowa too as they are trying to "cut corners" and yet eat healthy too. I really like the ebooks too but couldn't see how much they were so I didn't pursue at this time but it was tempting especially the one on Organizing your kitchen and pantry. I have WAY TOO MUCH STUFF in my kitchen and it gets in the way of being as efficient as I could be. It's hard to determine what I should get rid of though so maybe that ebook would help me pare down and keep my kitchen organized so it would be easier to prepare meals. Has anyone tried her ebooks? Thanks again!
