As many of you know my mom and dad own a bed and breakfast.(http://www.orchardhousebb.com) They have just started doing work on a second house on the property and are remodling all the rooms to use as additional guest rooms. My mom is planning on calling it the "farm house" and all the rooms have farm type names which I cant for the life of me remember. My mom wants to make some sort of sign for the door of each room with its name on it. In the main house all the rooms have apple names so she has a little wooden apple with the name painted on it. Any suggestions about what she could do in the "farm house". I had suggested painting saw blades but she said it wasn't a good idea to have a "weapon" on the doors!

Sadly, I don't have one clever suggestion but I just had to say that visited the web site and Orchard House looks delightful! Can't wait to see the new accomodations.

Julie,
there is a bed and breakfast where I live and they have room called the chicken room. That is where you sit to eat. They have everything chicken in it. They have many chicken ceramics, eggs, nests, and some really pretty pictures painted on the wall. Its very interesting and people really like it. It has wonderful charm.
I really like the little screen doors.........those are really cute !!! I would really love to have one of those. Kathie you did a great job on those.

she has already chosen the room names I just can't rember them. It used to be an apple orchard in the late 1800's which is why they have apple names. I am not sure other fruits would really fit. They are gong with faemish new because the new house is the original farmhouse that was first built on the property. The history is totally amazing. I'll forward this thread to my mom and will see what she says.

Julie ... Orchard House ... apples are grown in an orchard so the apple theme in the main house fits. how about using other fruites/vegetablers that grown in orchards as themes for additional houses. Peach, cherry, orange (or do ornages grow in groves?)anyway, you get the idea. I like the way that would tie back into the name of their B&B!

Do let us know what they come up with!

Then each room.. you could as your travels allowed.. slowly start collecting ceramic hens & pictures of each of these chickens & add them to that room as you find them! What a really cool idea!

I can attest to the miniature screen doors being so very cute. I one and adore it.
It would also be very very lightweight as well.

Very cute idea, Kathie. What about (along those same lines) a chicken (black with white polka dots and a red crest, and other varying colors per room) or little enamel buckets that say, "eggs" with faux eggsI l inside and the name of the room somewhere displayed.

I'm picturing the rolling pin thing and I think that would be real cute, too. Find some with the colored handles, and then paint the name of the room on the front side.

Ok.. See the Wee little Door to the Left? Hanging on the Wall?

Alright.. They are very Similar to this.. Except instead of the painted Glass Insert.. i did Screen..
& Used a very liteweight wood.. So they were easy to use & mail as gifts.. & then see what I mean about the bottom screen part then.. you could put a small hinge then & use it almost as a little 'extra' door for messages.. but the Guests would clearly see into the Screen that there was something in there for them.. especially if they'd been advised ahead of time that this was a way of communication..

Just a fun idea..

Thanks girls. Yes Kathie she is looking for something for each bedroom door. Do you have a picture of the screen thing? I am having a hard time picturing it.

What comes to my mind is old equipment either used in a farmhouse kitchen or the barn.

You could get creative with old wooden rolling pins, and have someone with a table saw slice off part of the rounded side so it would lie flat against the door.

Or old wooden spoons, graters, etc.

Old wooden buckets could be cut in half for mounting and you could even put flowers in these.

Just a few thoughts.

I made the Cutests little Screen Doors a year or so ago for a Swap..
With a really pretty saying on them..

Is she thinking of having something on each of the bedroom doors? is that what your saying? Having each Bedroom door with their own teeny colored Screen doors on them would be sweet.. you know.. just as a decoration.. she could even fashion a hinge on the bottom screen to open up tp hold Notes for the Guests Maybe..
My Screen Dooors were 18 inches tall I'm thinking..
If this sounds at all anything like something you'd be interested in I'd be happy to see if I still have any of them still here.. & send one out for ya! For a 'prototype'..
