I've been seeing a lot of blogs lately in which the writers have felt called to be "dresses and skirts only" - wearing dresses and skirts as their everyday wear, to care for children, the house, their homesteads, everything, as opposed to jeans. I found this really fascinating, for some reason, then I started thinking about my own childhood. My grandma, who lived next door, never had a pair of jeans or pants on in her life and she raised 12 children in very primitive conditions. My mom always wore dresses until I was around 16 or 17 years old, then switched to "slacks". I'm not sure why the switch to more feminine attire sounds so radical to me, but I'm finding myself wanting to wear a skirt and top a couple of days a week - something I've never done, even when I worked outside the home and it was really appropriate. The blogs I"ve been reading say they wear skirts year round, with leggings, and they're as warm as pants for feeding chickens, milking cows, etc. Do any of you dress like this for everyday, and if so, what is your reason - comfort, modesty, religious belief? Tell us where you stand on this!

Hey you know what? I remember I made a pink floral skirt right before I gained weight and put it away in another closet - I"ll have to get that one out too when I'm taking pictures. I've never worn it - too tight - but maybe pretty soon. It's New Look #6389 view C. It's a little bit flirtier than the others - I'll take a picture of it too.

Hey Debi - hows that new little sweetie you've got? I'm jelous! I looooooooove babies!!!!
About my skirts - I'm using two patterns - One is New Look #6953 - so easy you could make it with your eyes closed!! I used view C for a print skirt awhile back and view F without the ruffle for my kahki skirt. The other one I used, was Simplicity 5597, view E - also very easy, almost the same as the other one, but a bit more fullness. I bought the pattern because I liked View A and B but haven't made them yet. Hey Corrine - view A and B are a bit flirty and sexy - maybe I'll try them about 30 lbs. from now!!

I love skirts and dresses but they have to be a bit flirty/sexy for me. I wore dowdy skirts for too long. I like them long and whispy and just slightly alluring.

Hi everyone. I have only worn dresses and skirts most of my life (70). When we where on the ranch and feeding cows in the winter I would put on an old snow suit over my dress and drive the open tractor ( no cab). The thing I like about this kind of dressing is that it helps you to be more modest. I also always wear an apron and it can come off to show the nice outfit underneath. I have had to go back to sewing my own to have the kind I like.

Yes, I know I can sew them - it's just a mental thing I guess. For some reason I feel like I'm "dressing up" too much when I wear a skirt or dress but in looking at patterns and my stash, it's actually cheaper than buying jeans! Losing weight makes me want to wear skirts and dresses - for some reason I always think I look heavier in a skirt than in pants but that's getting better as I drop the pounds. I think I'm working through that mental thing now - kinda wonder what my family is going to say - but I"m going to start out wearing a skirt or dress when I go shopping and work up from there. Sounds really silly when I say it - it's not like I'm wanting to do something really radical - I am a woman after all!!!

Sherri, with your sewing talent, just sew you up a batch of swingy skirts and dresses! I find it just as easy to put on an A-line skirt and cute T-shirt or tank as it is to wear jeans, but I feel so much more polished. Winter I just make my skirts longer and out of suedecloth, soft corduroy, etc. to wear with fleece tops. Summer dresses in simple flattering A-Line styles (a la 60's vintage) are simple to sew up and so comfortable. You'll be stylin' in no time.

Hi Everyone! I'm new here--I've been reading all the posts for awhile, however this post was dear to my heart so I decided to jump in. I've worn only skirts and dresses since the early 80's. We lived on a small farm then and I mucked the horses stalls, cleaned out the chicken coop, manured the gardens, tended the gardens and cooked in the fireplace all in my long skirts. I loved it!! If our great, great foremothers could manage why can't we? I even would go sledding with my husband and children in my long skirts with my snuggy, homemade flannel petticoats underneath! What fun!-and I was warm as toast!! If you have a hankering to 'kick the pants' habit, I highly recommend it. It truly helps you to relate to earlier times--and I,for one, thinks that is a good thing!

May you find Serenity and Tranquility in a world you may not always understand.

Betty Jo - you must have great thrift stores! I went looking yesterday for some dresses so I could try out the new me without a big investment. My word!! The dresses in the Value Village were $8.99 and up and the skirts were $5.99 and up! The Goodwill wasn't any better! I wish I could find some independent little thrift store in our area that charges a more reasonable price. In Montana, there are a couple of little thrift stores run by local people (not big organizations) and I have purchased capris and jeans there for .50 a pair. Now I don't expect those remarkable prices around here, but I would like to be able to find something less than $5.00! Any of you Washington gals know of any thrift stores in the Olympia area that are a little more reasonable than the big box thrift stores?

I love wearing dresses, jumpers and skirts. The guys at the fire station laugh at me because I will come flyin' in for a call in a dress and throw on my bunker gear right over it. Just gotta have socks on though. I especially like dresses/skirts in the summer time, it's so much cooler and comfortable, better than shorts. I have actually moved away from wearing jeans, I wear sweat pants or am in uniform half the time. But I don't like the sweat pants with the elastic in the ankle, I like the kind that zip up at the ankle. Ok- that was more than you wanted to know!

I Love My Dresses. I get them from the thrift stores and rummage sales. I wore dresses as a young girl and teen then switched to jeans in high school when I could buy them myself. But never really left the dresses or skirts behind. They are harder to chase and play with young ones or gardening. I'm always tripping on mine so then I wear pants, capris or culottes. But when I'm doing anything else its a dress or skirt for me. I love dresses as they don't have a waist so no cutting when bending down. They just feel so free. When people visit they always ask why I'm so dressed? Just love the free flowing feeling of a beautiful dress. P.S. I do not pay more then $3 for them so if they get ruined I just toss them or recreate them into something else.

When I was a kid we always had to wear dresses to school. That was our public schools policy for girls. My mother and both grandmothers wore dresses until the mid '70's. I love to wear a skirt in the evening, I feel much prettier for my husband when he comes home from work. I hope to find a few more summer skirts to wear this season. Right now they've bee too expensive for my budget though.

When i was young, I don't remember wearing dresses all that often. I lived in Maine in the summer (often not much different than fall when you are right on the ocean) and spent the school year at a ranch boarding school in Arizona. I do remember my first cowgirl outfit when i was around six, It was blue, a skirt and a vest with white fringe, I loved it. Of course I had a hat and boots too. When my family moved back east permanently I was sent to a boarding school where we were required to wear hideous uniforms. I went to a differnt schoolo the next year and finally managed to get kicked out of school so I could live at home with my parents. I wore skirts to school, and being a bit of a lardass I did not wear pants that often. I have always loved to play dress up, so when i went to art school in the fall of 1967, I really had fun making all kinds of wild dresses for myself. I almost always wear skirts of long jumpers that I make, an occasional dress if I can find one I like or spare the energy to make one. I wear my leggings at least through two seasons of the year. Once I discovered lined "dink boots" we call them around here, winter no longer intimidated me....

I guess the bottom line is, I always wish I'd been born in an earlier time, I like the every day clothes of pioneer days, etc.

Hi Sherri,
When I was growing up, we wore dresses all the time. Yes, even in the bitter freezing cold. We just put leggings or tights on underneath. It was for modesty purposes at that time. My parents sort of made me too, which was a struggle for me to fit into the "norm". It didn't kill me though. We all wear pants now, but it is because our lifestyles have changed. I now have two kiddos and find that skirts aren't user friendly when it comes to chasing them around the yard or playing on the playground. Mom wears them as she works now and it is more modest to wear them then, I guess.
I know for the summertime, I like the summer breeze dresses as it is much cooler than jeans.

My husband likes me in them as he says that it makes me seem more feminine.I guess because I battled it so much as a teen that I can't fully appreciate the beauty in dresses right now. Maybe later when I am much older.:)

well i think i just talkd a circle, but those were my thoughts on it...heehee
hugs
