I'm just curious if any of you gals here run a roadside produce and egg stand? and if so what did/do you have to do to keep it all legal and above board? I knew of a fellow here in town that had set up a little area in his yard to sell honey on an "honor system" he would jar up honey and then had a little box attached to the table with a padlock on it and a slot in it for folks to put their payment for the honey.
There is also a local u pick blueberry farm here that sometimes operates on a honor system.
So I am just really curious as to how to go about something like this "if" I ever wanted to do something like a roadside stand.
I'm not going to right now..but have just been getting curious lately about how one would go about this type of thing (yes, I'm ever the "inquiring minds wanna know type of gal"..ha)
Thanks in advance for your comments.

thank you Meg for the information. As I wasn't finding much at all about the roadside stands..and was seeing that in some cases it is allowed.
Thanks for the advice about the eggs too.
I of course will continue researching it.And of course if I wind up with more produce and eggs than I can shake a stick at..a local farmer's market would be a good route to go.

Jessica- I could not find any programs on the Florida Farm Bureau website related to what they offer in Kentucky. Thanks though for that link you shared.

Jeannie_ thank you. yes parts of Ocala have become a bit crowded, but I am really hoping to be in a bit rural area...in fact hubby knows that no way do I want to be smack dab in the city.
That is not even an option for me...ha.
Gosh..aren't I just difficult to live with..ha.
Actually he doesn't want to be in the city either. So we'll definitely be looking for something with a bit of space around us and where we can have a large garden and keep our chickens and duck.Thank you for your comments, and "good luck" wishes.

Hi Tina,
I know I'm getting in late on this, but I did some of my own research on this not too long ago. It probably differs according to your own state law though-

Here in ontario, you can sell on your own roadside no problem. It's called "farmgate". You don't need any special permits or anything. However once you move to say a farmer's market, then all the paperwork comes into play. Also please check into the legalities if you wanted to sell eggs. I considered it (and still might), but laws are stricter for those than regular produce. At your farmgate they don't need to be pasturized/gov. inspected but move them anywhere else - and they have to have the full once over.
There is a lady down the road that sells her eggs on the honour system from an old fridge at the end of her driveway. Seems to work a-okay.

Good luck!

Tina - thank you so much for sharing your recent family story with me (and all of us). Ocala is a great location. Parts of it have become a little crowded since the 1980's, but I love to drive through that area. I remember the time when it really was "old" Florida, and there are parts that still are. It will be good to be near family. Keep us posted!

No one here would ever think that you could not make up your mind. Moving is a big decision! I hope yours goes along smoothly.

Hey Jeannie..oh no need to apologize..ha.
I didn't mention much about it because yes it did look like.."gosh can't those folks make up their minds!"
yes..at first we had been really talking about Thomasville, Ga..and in fact the inlaws had even moved to Thomasville, Ga making it even more of a possibility for us to relocate there, but then..after they were there for about 3 months and after they had sold an absolutely gorgeous custom built home in Ocala...they decided that Thomasville wasn't what they were looking for after all.And so they went back to Ocala and just bought a nice home there again.
And then hubby had a call about a job in Huntsville..and we thought that might be a possibility...but they never called back...so..we sat down together and had a very long discussion about what we want/need to do for our family.
And since the parents are getting on up there in age, and since I have recently lost 2 family members within the last 3 yrs..and since I have lived a 9 hr. drive from my family the entire time we have been married and we've lived a 5 hr drive from his folks..we decided that it is actually better to become more of a family unit..and to be closer to the parents that are getting older..to be able to be there for them when the time comes.
We have always enjoyed our many visits to Ocala over the years and like the surrounding rural areas near there(Dunnellon and Macintosh and Micanopy) and my husband grew up on the Withlacoochee River...and he still has school chums that he stays in contact with in the area...well..it just seemed like a better fit for our family at this stage of our lives.
And not to mention that we know our way somewhat around town and it wouldn't feel like being in a totally foreign area.
And my daughter has a good friend in the area too..and my mom in law and I get along splendidly.
So..it just "feels right"
And yes..you pegged me..that's why I was asking about Ocala chapters. ;0)
I heard back from one gal and wrote her back nearly 2 weeks ago and sadly haven't heard anything back:0(
So, I have been in contact with a home school support group in the area, and one of the gals in that group has been emailing me pretty regular about her gardening, and wanting to be more involved in buying organic foods and showed interest when I mentioned being a part of Mary Jane's Farm.
So..I may just have to get a chapter going there.
But yes..we are actually in the process of getting the house market ready now and will be putting it on the market in January.
So..yep..that's the "loop" and that's the latest.
No, we haven't bought a place yet..we have to go check out the area, and look for a house.

I don't know if the farm bureau has it down there, but up here they have a "certified roadside market" program and they basically will advertise and promote your business. Here is the link: http://www.kyfb.com/federation/member%20benefits/roadside.asp

They have tours of certain ones each year, put it in local papers, magazines, etc to really get the word out.

I remember my grandparents back in the day would sell watermelons out in front of their house with the honor system. So much per melon. I remember enjoying running out there to count the money to see how much money we made for a day when I went to spend the weekend with them. :)

So you have chosen Ocala??? Wow, I thought you were looking in North Georgia; that is the last I read. So that is why you were asking about Ocala chapter members! Sorry I am out of your life change/moving loop! When are you going and have you bought a place?

We have those seasonally here - in winter it is firewood, in summer peaches and watermelons. And always on the way to the beach it is boiled p-nuts.....I do not think they have any sort of license.....and if you were doing anything wrong, I bet you would only be asked to move along. Here, they choose corners that are well-travelled, in upscale neighborhood areas.....! Or as I say, the roads to the beach on US 98. Try it sometime - I am sure you will find out if it is worthwhile. I have never found anyone with fresh eggs - even at our outdoor markets. And i love them!!!! I may have to drive to PC to get yours! :)

well around here they have folks just pull up in pickup trucks..open the back and sell shrimp, or sweet potatoes, or strawberries out of a parking lot of a corner lot.
I was just wondering if there was some sort of law in regards to that type of stuff.
Cause I'd like to be able to one day set up a small roadside stand with excess eggs and produce from the garden.

I think in Ky you can sell what you want to off of the farm but not commercial, My husband always sold watermelons , He never asked the law he just made his own as long as it was okay with the property owners he was selling off of

Great story, Shirley Jean!!! Sounds like someone I'd like to meet!

Tina, I don't know about the legalities, but it seems like around here, folks just set them up :) Especially on some of the more rural main routes--one gal has tomatoes, zucchini, etc.. and does the honor system. No scale, just flat pricing.

I have never run one, but I use one! Beare's Berries, in Havana, has a wonderful blueberry orchard. All organic. Each year, you can drive onto their farm and pick blueberries to your heart's content. He is getting elderly, so he is not always out there at the stand. He has a scale and bags and buckets available. A person takes a bucket, the weight of which is figured into the scale, and fills it.
When you have picked what you want, you weigh it, then pour the bucket contents into a bag, and leave payment in a locked box that has a slot in it. I have never heard of anyone robbing him. He even has a cooler with water in it, and you leave money for your bottled water! There is a white tent with lawn chairs that you can sit under to cool off, and it is so peaceful there.

Here is an interesting fact - Mr. Beare is an Englishman, and he has been knighted by the Queen! He is such a dear, farmer man, and so funny, and he has met the Queen of England! His wife is a writer, and writes an occasional column in our local newspaper. But they are salt of the earth. Tina - he would make a great story for your online mag! Which I read yesterday, by the way, and it is great as always.
