about people who are leaving their city lifestyles behind and moving to the country.
It seems because of the rising oil and food prices many people are worried that this country is going to hit a big crash.
While I'm not sure I agree with that, I think it's wonderful that people are homesteading, buying some property, eating and buying locally and simplifying their lives dramatically.
People are looking for alternative sources of energy and learning to live off the grid. They're learning to farm too!
I was curious if any of you farm girls have seen new people moving to your rural areas?
I really believe if the motivation is to create a simpler, less wasteful life where you can get back to the simple pleasures or better yet, learn what the simple plesures are...well it'd be a much better world, don't you think?

It's sounds like a lovely life Tracy! Thanks for responding. I'm surprised that not more farmgirls had some input on this subject!

Where I live, there really isn't any place FOR new people to move into! It's all farm land and very few houses. We are fortunate to live on a 22+ acre farm that belongs to my husband's family. We raise several different breeds of animals (sheep, dairy goats, chickens) and are planting a HUGE garden. It will have more things in it this year than I normally plant. Things that will be canned or frozen. We are pretty much set as far as food goes, though the thought of eating one of my critters hurts my heart! But... if it came down to it, well, I wouldn't sit back and watch my family starve. We also grow our own hay, so the animals will be well fed too, and the extra hay we sell always brings in good money!

People close to us have been asking for a lot of things lately. Eggs, garden plants that have not been planted yet (I always grow too many anyway!), etc... I'll be milking my goats soon and making things with their milk, so I'm sure there will be lots of requests for that sort of stuff too (though it will be my very first attempt-- so maybe NOT! (LOL) When the veggies come, there will be lot's of requests for those too, but my friends and family will be helping with the canning, so I don't mind sharing. It's so much more fun to do anyway when you're slaving away with people who make you laugh!

Anyway, I'm not worried. We are pretty comfortable here. We've lived the "simple" life for years and have become quite good at living it well! ~~~Tracy
