Now, you know I am not a big Walmart fan but I have bought things from there. Well, today I returned 5 things (2 were electronics hubby bought and didn't work and 3 clothing type items)on 3 different receipts. The girl was actually getting p***y with me and slamming the scanning gun each time she did a transaction. She kept asking me what was wrong with the stuff and I told her, I just want to return them. I don't think I need to give a reason. I honestly laughed at her, out loud. I told her before I left if she hates her job so much she needed to get a new one. One woman clapped behind me.

I know I should have been nicer but the whole slamming the scanner gun got to me...

I am so thankful I do not have to work there and more so I don't have to work with her. I wish her all the best but she needs to learn some manners.

You wanna know a place that sucks to work at? Michaels Arts, 'specially during thanksgiving and christmas. SPECIALLY when the power goes out and you have to ring everything by a calculator. I SWEAR everything just magically went on sale when that happened. NOT fun, and I WAS (Admitting here) one of THOSE unhappy cashiers. That is exactly why I chose not to work in retail, I am not nice enough for it. I only like old people, or little kids, lol ; )

I worked at Wal Mart and K Mart at different times of my life (only once each tho!) and it was enuf to show me that I had NO business working at either place!! Actually at K Mart I was kind of happy to work in the Garden dept but as soon as some muckety-muck found out I was HAPPY with my job, they gave me a cashier job! Not a good fit to say the least! I was confused at why some customers were so sour.

The job at Wal Mart was kind of stressful cuz some cashier decided she didn't like me for some reason and kept telling management about me, which they never did anything but I never did find out why this certain cashier didn't like me. One time I applied at Wal-Mart, when I was in the Navy Reserves and was turned down cuz I wouldn't be available every wknd. Which I now know is illegal...

But I have wondered why some people take those jobs and obviously aren't happy. To me, move on and do something else. Maybe they just can't see the light at the end of the tunnel or afraid.

I have found I don't need to be in contact with customers at all!! So I'm a long haul truck driver and let my hubby deal with most people. I'm way too blunt for most people, it seems...hehehe...

I have only ever worked jobs in customer service. And frankly I know people can be having a bad day. But I was seperated from my husband, not that I wanted to be, and I still smiled and told people to have a nice day and did everything quickly and cheerfully. The main problem alot of the time anymore seems to be that people just don't care. I am not saying this about any of the ladies who posted here, so please understand that.

There is no pride in your job anymore it seems. And frankly one of the most irritating people I have ever had to deal with works at the customer service desk of WalMart. Every return to her is a BIG big problem. Like I am ruining her day by returning something.

My thoughts are ummm hello, this is your job get over it. I did not say this of course, however the last time I had to deal with her, I was returning a lock for a door that fell apart when I tried to put it in the door. I DID NOT keep the reciept as I needed the lock and had no intention of returning it. I had my old Drivers Liscense with me, but it was expired, I just forgot about replacing it. I NEVER look at it.

Anyway this is a 9.00 purchase and she she says nope sorry, you don't have a valid ID. I said, excuse me, you guys return stuff without ID and put it on gift cards. She said nope sorry. I said nope I don't think so, get managment. She gets them up there and SIGHS really big saying she does not have a current ID and wants to return this, he was like what is it 9.00 dollars?? He said NO problem.

So of course I got even more attitude after he left, but this gal is just irritating, I was returning a undergarment that I bought thinking I need it for under a dress and decided I did not, it was never used had the reciept, tags still on, and she lifts it up in the air ABOVE my head, and there was like 5 men behind me, and she is turning it over and over and then SIGHS okay. I am thinking good greif have a bit of tact. But okay done complaining.

Seriously though I know sometimes that a customer service job is all there is, so my thoughts have always been that just do it the best you can, smile, and go home take a hot shower and forget it. LOL Sometimes easier said then done.

I actually know someone who is a Walmart regional manager and makes quite good money, having worked up from cashier. He took every opportunity and worked hard.

I think Brenda hit something key here. A lot of people, at least who I know who hate their jobs, are often the one's not taking opportunities for some sort of positive advancement or change as it comes and that in turn affects their jobs and their attitudes. But honestly, if you hate your job that much, do something about it. I didn't go to college until I was 32 years old, I worked from everything from a hairdresser, housekeeper, secretarial, retail, hostess/waitress, factory type work- saving my money so I could move on and learning everything I could about that job to get advanced and make more $$. I didn't have a brand new car until I was 29 and I am still driving my Jeep and love it. If I spend over $30 on an article of clothing, I think I am being extravangant but boy give me a two fer one sale on $10 t-shirts and I am rich, ) and I didn't grow up with money but I grew up around it in the area I live, and either way, I am unimpressed with it and what people think it can buy. I see a lot of young people today who don't want to start at the bottom, no matter job or education level, yet they have brand new this's and that's and the best wardrobe I have ever seen on a 19 year old in my whole life. So, yes, this does get off subject but at the same time, everything builds character and how you deal with things says a great deal with how you will get by in life. I am not talking money value wise, but attitude wise.

I must be having a bad week because I really am not feeling sorry for anyone right now and for that, I do apologize for my bad attitude but boy, some days, a girl just has to vent!!!

Jessica - I just read over what I posted last night and I don't think I was very fair in my categorization of Wal-Mart employees. Your response was right on target, and very nice. I know that a job at WalMart might be just the right opportunity at the right time for the people who are working there, and in some communities it might be the best thing going.

Part of it is my frustration with my own daughter who works at a convenience store but has thrown away many other opportunities to get an education or a better job. And isn't even thinking in terms of a career.

I'm glad you cleared up that the welfare story is just a rumor - it really concerned me. If true, it certainly doesn't seem like it should be legal!

Kate- not offfended at all. (((HUGS))) I think I may owe you all an apology. I also talked to my Mom right after that, so I was still channelling some negative energy in my typing. BREATHE!!! When I worked as a hairdresser, I had a viral woman who came in once a month and wnated me because I could do her hair just as she liked it but she was horrible to deal with. OH! The headaches with that one!!! And my boss only saw $$$...grrrrr!!!

I have dealt with this same cashier before, except she was at the check out. Same attitude and I think I just had enough yesterday. When you live in a small town, you start to get to know people. I know over at the HEB there is a lady in the deli that ignores you and one of the postal carriers we have here is VERY sarcastic and come off as a jerk to some.

I wonder how much Walmart employees get spoken to about returns- as in Walmart losing money? I am sure it is an issue they put on their employees.

Teresa,
The only place I know of that will let you return a book is Barnes and Noble and it has to be in selling condition. I tried to return one to Walmart too and they won't take them which is understandable really.

Heather,
I work in retail, not walmart and not a large store. There are some people who just aren't happy in this world. I work in a very small gift shop so the people who come in are usually ladies. Some just want to get their stuff and get out so they try to hurry you up which I don't do because I don't want to make mistakes on the register so I just smile tell them to have a good day and leave it at that. When I was in high school I worked part time at a Kmart and the one thing I learned was the customer was always right. If they weren't we still needed to have a pleasant attitude and be nice while explaining the situation. Some people have rough days and I can understand that. But I see lots come in who have some sort of physical disability and they are so sweet and you wonder about those who are nasty and you think who really has the right? Granted most of us do let what is happening in life change our attitude from day to day but I think when you are working with the public you have to check the attitude at the door and smile. If things are that tough then maybe a day off is needed to recuperate though realistically speaking people can't usually just take a day off either. Of course if what upsets them happened at work then they need to work it out later not take it out on a customer. Well, just thought I'd add a bit to the conversation here.

ok that was funny heather cause i got p***y at walmart the other day cause i returned one to many things without a receipt and i couldnt return a book i bought there and didnt realize what it was for my girls and i couldnt return it. i just cant remember what i did with the receipt i wish they could have the same system as target where they can look it up by scanning your debit card so much easier for the ones of us who seem to loose receipts or toss them cause well i dont need it anymore.

Oh, Heather, I meant no offense on my comment; I hope you didn't think I meant to offend you. I apologize if I did. I probably would have reacted to her the same way you did. In my case, I was amazed my boss backed me up (for the most part) as she and I couldn't stand each other.
This is the only customer I have ever waited on at all my various customer service position that made me so frustrated and mad, that I shook and cried over it. (Normally, I don't cry like that-especially in front of people)
In fact you probably did her a favor as it probably didn't occur to her to find a new job. Most people would rather stay comfortable at a job they hate, than take the leap to a new position they might love.

Brenda - to answer your questions (coming from someone who use to work there in mgmt)....sometimes Walmart is the best place to get a job in some towns. I know when I was there (over 6 years ago), they started them out at about $7-8 an hour when minimum wage was $5.15. Everywhere else wouldn't budge over $5.25 if even that much. It varies, but you know that it will be there for a long time. They usually start out cashiers a lot higher than other places. Most will work there because there is some flexibility of work hours. The health benefits are somewhat good. Being a large corporation, health insurance and other insurance was a lot cheaper for the employee. I don't think it was a lack of job skills, it was actually a good learning experience. You can also climb up in the system. The manager I worked under began as someone that pushed carts when he started. It is not true that they hand out information on applying for welfare and that other stuff. I don't know who made that silly rumor up. The health insurance, retirement, etc are pretty good and the employees pay for it at a lot lower rate since it is a large corporation. Most people work 40 hour weeks. You see a lot working part time because that is what they requested to be or it can be due to scheduling/time of day. Most of the ones that were part time where I was worked PT because they were going to school, etc.

Being in retail, you deal with constant stress. You never know what may have happened 5 minutes or even an hour ago or earlier in the day with a cashier or customer service rep. They could have just had a very rude customer just a few minutes before and they didn't have time to recover from it before it was time to go on to a new customer. I saw it a few times. The best thing to do as a customer is to smile, say hi, give them a compliment, and tell them have a nice day. You never know how far can go.

I thought I would provide some insight being a former employee. I trained in every area in that store so I know what each department and person had to go through.

You know, I feel so sorry for people who have to work at WalMart or other retail discount stores. Not that you should have to put up with bad behavior!

I wonder what makes them choose to work there? Lack of other job skills? Lack of awareness of other opportunities? Scheduling flexibility? Close to home (quick transit time?) It seems so obvious (to me, anyway) that the pay and benefits aren't the best.

I am super lucky to have the job I have, but I also pay a lot of attention to ongoing education opportunities and keep upgrading skills as I go along.

The thing that really made me pay attention to this was that I bought my last house from a couple that had recently been divorced, and the woman was living in the house and didn't want to sell, but had to because of the divorce agreement. She was studying nursing but working at Wal-Mart and had not maintained the house for several years, didn't have enough income. I had a lot of fixing up to do when I moved in (as a divorcee myself, I was happy for the how price because of the maintenance items) but I felt somewhat guilty, almost like I was taking advantage of her....
Over ten years later, I still occasionally see her at Wal-Mart- she's still working there. Why hasn't she moved on?

Is it true that they hand out information on applying for welfare and state-provided health insurance to their employees? Why don't they just pay them a living wage and give them 40 hours a week instead of making everyone part-time?

Kate- I worked retail for 5 years at Macy's and as a hairdresser, so I have seen it all and it can be aggravating but I did nothing to annoy her until she got p***y with me and there was a red shirt standing there- aren't those the managers? In fact, I asked her how she was and she ignored me and grabbed the receipts from me. Just another reason I refuse to deal with Walmart, that is all.

Speaking as a former retail person I can sort of relate to her bad attitude. The job and pay suck.

I slammed my gun when I was ringing someone out who was p***y with me because we ran out of boxes. (It was Christmas time, about two days before) Of course, it is MY fault. I personally order all of the boxes for JCP. LOL

She just kept harping and harping about it, so I was slamming my gun while ringing her up, and biting my tongue so I didn't tell her where to go and how to get there.
Long story short, my manager told her that I shouldn't have been slamming the gun, if she was truly a former retail she would be more understanding, and perhaps she her money would be better spent somewhere else.

Well, usually I try to just smile and be nice, but she was really SLAMMING and sighing after each thing and then she kept trying to talk to her girlfriend while there was about 8 people behind me and she was the only one doing returns. Of course, there were 2 other employees standing there doing nothing but gabbing. I am sorry, I just couldn't take it. I think my stress level with everything going on right now hit the roof and she was what popped it.

Walmart is a nightmare- I think I'd be p***y if I worked there, too. But, like you said, she should find a job somewhere else instead of taking it out on her customers.
