I would like to purchase a big enough tent to do 3-5 days comfortably but simply. What kind of gear should I look for as far as cooking, what to have on hand such as matches, stoves, propane, food (MJ's covers most of that), etc. I would like to go with Charlie for an overnighter at the campground, spending time hiking and swimming and having fun. What has worked for you? What hasn't? So far all I own is a hand-cranked flashlight.

Don't forget an outdoor dutch oven. I love mine, and you can make anything in them!

Looks like Lisa's list is the same as mine. One year we forgot matches, that made for a interesting camping trip...so, since then, I have a large rubbermaid that fits in the back of my rig that I have been stock piling old knives, cutting boards, random coffee mugs, etc. So, eventually, all I will have to do is load the rubbermaid in the back of the car, grab a change of clothes for all, the tent and bags and some yummies and hit the road!! Another tip, we use our coffee mugs as bowls and plates. Each person gets a coffee mug and a spoon for camp meals and that's it...less dishes.

The www.maryjanesoutpost.org forum girls will have all the tips you'll need for getting out with Charlie!

When we go camping, we take:
tent
sleeping bags
change of clothes
a couple towels and wash cloths
essential toiletries (soap, toothpaste/brush)
extra pair of shoes (in case we end up going into a creek or something)
ice chest with perishables
picnic basket with non-perishables
one large cooking pot
a couple fry pans(cast iron)
utensils
dish pan for washing dishes and ourselves
a large cutting board for preparing meals
an old oven rack placed on rocks over the fire for cooking
an axe or hatchet for firewood
matches in waterproof container
rain gear
propane lantern
deck of cards in case we get rained out!
I think that's about it. Other than water bottles for hiking and a tank of gas to get there!

You should check out maryjanesoutpost.org. They have a forum similar to the one here! Those "campgirls" might know more than us "farmgirls"!!!!!

I recommend those foam rubber pads. They keep the body heat off the ground and buffer you against rocks. Also I love those mummy style sleeping bags
