I don't know if this commercial is shown in your area, but it bugs the bejeezus out of me. This little, perfect woman talks about how she used her Citicard to redecorate her living room and the footage (and quirky music) proceed to show her running around, moving things, changing fabrics, returning items to stores, and then she says, I realized that after all, it wasn't my living room that needed updating, it was my husband!! And she used the money she gets back on her Citicard (for spending so much on stuff to redecorate with) to buy him a new J. Crew Wardrobe so that he can be allowed to sit in the perfect living room with her. CACK!!!! I've seen it sooo many times, and each time I see it, I get more frustrated with how absolutely shallow this woman is...or rather how shallow the advertiser MAKES women to be!!! And this man, just lets her dress him and tell him he's inferior and he just smirks like it's "ok"....Grr.

As if that's all that women do, shop and rearrange the furniture, as if we're all just nit picky hens who are never satisfied with people or our homes. For whatever reason (ok...all the above), I find it insulting.

I guess I have a lot of my Great Gran in me who hated the original Calgon Commercial where the mother screams at her toddler son, "Jimmy!!!! Leave me alone!!!!". My Grandmother would always say, "someone needs to smack that woman--that's her CHILD, not a piece of dirt that she can flick away because she's frustrated!!!!"

Well, that would seem to be demonstrating how "safe" the product is, right?

A few months ago there was a commercial for some clorox spray that is, "safe," for kids, around food, etc. It had the actress spray the highchair tray while the baby was still in it. It didn't run for very long, and the first time Isaw it, I screamed. It was replaced by one with a panel of moms telling the world how great and safe it is.

No, Amie...I'd agree that those are off, but then, I'm super sensistive to the feeling that any parent would feel "cursed" with a downes baby...I've worked with these children teaching life skills and it's such an "old" mentality.

For the life of me, I wonder who they test these adverts on--the posters in your office were tested on people motivated by fear? I'm not sure. I just think a dead baby and "CURSED" under the happy face of a downes girl is too much, too.

I'm really not hyper sensitive, but some of these things geared towards the masses just bug me, I guess.

You know, this commercial didn't bother me. And I'm one to be bothered by things like that. It took 2 or 3 times for me to get the point though.

The ones that make me mad right now are the ads for the Visa check card that make it look like you'll bring the world to a screeching halt if you make your purchase with cash. It's so untrue. Cash is faster. No pin to enter, no receipt to sign, no waiting for the card to clear. Cash ought to sue for libel!

The worst ads I've ever seen in my life, though, were posters for our local United Way campaign. They like to use stories from your own workplace to encourage you to donate. One year, when I was working at a local college, I saw these two ads:
One told the story of a family whose baby was stillborn, and the UW program that helped them deal with the loss. It featured a picture of the baby. The DEAD baby. I can understand that some people find comfort in having the only photo of their lost child. But it was creepy to see it up on the wall every day.

The other one was even worse. It was a picture of a cute, smiling little girl who obviously had Down Syndrome. The caption told how hard it was for her parents to learn that their baby was disabled and described all the help they got from the UW. But the phrase they used was "So and so thought her family must be cursed when they got this news." And the word "cursed" was in huge letters right under the little girl's face. That's horrible. Again, I definitely understand how the parents could have felt that way when it first happened. But is that still how they feel about their child? Is that how they want the whole community to see her?

Sorry to rant. Those ads have been bugging me for years. At the time, I said these things to all my co-workers and everyone just shrugged. Is it just me? Don't they seem a little off?

Glad to know I'm not the only one, Alee...I can usually tune them out, but it's on like every 2 minutes here and it makes women out to be so vapid. It's just super dumb. I don't know that I'll send them an email, but I do think they should shorten the commercial--it goes on forEVER!!!!! Maybe then I won't have to listen to her whiny voice and her indecision.

Jonni- I think that commercial would irritate me as well. I usually use commercials like that to say "Yup! I won't be using THAT product" then I promptly email the company to tell them that I don't like their advertising. Free marketing research!

I once got SOOO offended by a interview in O magazine with a Pepsi offical over that wretched "Pepsi Blue" the interviewer asked "Don't you think it looks too much like Windex" and the Pepsi guy said "Oh kids today don't know how to clean and probably haven't ever seen Windex so we don't think it will be a problem"

I was so furious so I noted the guys name and noted how Pepsi email addresses are laid out (a quick google search helped me find several) and I sent an email to the three possible emails the guy could have. It was kind of funny two of the emails "went" somewhere and I got a reply from both guys. The one was FURIOUS that such a comment was published and the guy from the interview did some fast talking (I am sure so I didn't send the email to his boss). The email I sent said several things but mainly said "Who do you think washes the windows of your office building, all the fast food joints across America, and all the hotel rooms? Why would you think we (as youths) haven't seen or know what Windex is" I ended up getting a case of the wretched stuff overnighted to me. It must have cost a pretty penny too- considering how heavy a case of 20 ounce bottles are.
