Ok I have a confession to make. I don't like shoes. I am barefoot every chance I get. As soon as I step out my office door and into my car I remove the shoes so I can drive barefoot. My husband thinks it is hilarous. Now I have shoes, lots of lovely shoes for dress, farmin', or casual wear. But I prefer the feel of barefeet. To me nothing centers me more than taking a few deep breaths while standing in a field of grass barefoot.

Now I am wondering if there are any other barefoot farmgirls out there! Come on fess up....

I love going barefoot, but don't get to do it as much where I live now.

Too many goatheads and my feet get so dry that they crack and bleed quite often.

I still wear flip-flops whenever I am not at work. (I work at a garden center where I have to wear real shoes.) My husband makes fun of me because I always say, "Anything you can do in regular shoes you can do in flip-flops."

For the posts about worms in your dry cracked skin areas, that needs to be treated immediately! The worms can carry bacteria, and lead to a very serious problem, and lead to severe illness if it makes contact with your bloodstream.

I can't go barefoot due to a foot surgery gone bad. The closest thing I can come to it is to wear my crocs :(

Going barefoot is actually good for your feet, but everything in moderation. Your feet have many little muscles and tendons that need to be used. A lot of shoes keep these muscles working at a minimum, that are needed for better balance, posture, circulation and strength. Your feet and toes are very strong! They are actually stronger than your hands in some ways. For those who are barefoot around the house, which I do too all the time, use your toes to pick things up as often as possible. That is great exercise for your feet/toes. Going barefoot in an establishment is understandable, but in my opinion, its not hygenic or safe, and a bit disrespectful. I wouldnt walk into someones home with my filthy dirty feet.

Driving barefoot is great for safety, and feeling the sensitivity of your feet on the pedals. Flip flops are very dangerous to drive with on your feet. I have a friend that got her flip flop caught on the brake pedal as she had to put on her brakes suddenly, but hit the car in front of her because her shoe got caught on the pedal. I take all foot wear off when driving, even tennies and socks. The rubber sole can be slippery, especially when it is raining, or the soles are wet. For those that have owned an old VW, they know what I am talking about. The only way to drive an old vw is barefoot! I have yet to drive it with shoes on!:)

As far as leather sandals, I believe you would want to use a leather cleaner. I am sure they have cleaners specifically for stains, bacteria and remove odor, and that will not damage the leather. Make sure your feet are clean before you wear them, and clean them as needed. Everyones feet sweat, and can smell from time to time, thats normal. Hiking barefoot is ok, but cuts need to be treated immediately to avoid infection, and further injury.

Remember, even cavemen the had some type of protection on their feet!

Lastly, treat yourself to a pedicure occasionally! Your hubbys will love it!

I am one who the minute I hit the door the shoes are off. When I do leave the farm I am in my keens. It is funny I walk around the farm without shoes but would never do that in town - way too many ICK things in town... My youngest son would get sent to the principles office because he would not keep his shoes on - how weird is that? He tried to explain to them that his brain would not work if his feet where being chocked.

There are actually lots of people that go barefoot!

I'm always barefoot at home, it drives my husband absolutely nuts. He's sure I'm going to step on a nail and die or something. My best friend is a real barefooter and never wears shoes. There aren't any laws prohibiting driving without shoes on, going into restaurants, etc. She's done some pretty incredible hikes barefoot as well. The Lake Serene hike in Seattle for instance!

Thanks Jena, I had heard about the vaseline but forgot and I have that problem once in awhile. How should I wash leather sandals? Any special soap to kill bacteria? I notice my sandals get smelly sometimes. Any ideas?

Whow! Worms in your feet!!!Ugh! Maybe I am going to rethink my barefootedness! Ha! I am usually barefoot only in the house as my feet are tender now. I am sitting here right now 'talking' at you barefoot! It has cooled down here a lot in the last few days and my feet are cool right now. But I am not one for sox either.

Hi All,

It looks like this post might be a bit dated, but I wanted to respond! For swollen feet, keep them elevated for a while, and let some of the blood thin out in them. Take aspirin, and put IcyHot on them too. At night, for those with severely cracked heels, put on an ample amount of Vaseline on your feet at night, and put socks on. It might take a little getting used to, since it might feel a bit odd, but it will drastically help your feet, Of course a pumice stone in the shower is necessary. Flip flops and sandals pull the moisture out of your feet, so that is why they can dry out quickly. Our feet are meant to sweat to keep the skin moisturized, and always wear clean socks, and clean your shoes once a week for flip flops and sandals to keep the bacteria to a minimum. I always wash my feet after yoga especally being on a room with others that are barefoot in order to avoid contracting athletes foot. Rememebr ladies, men will like to massage your feet if they are soft and pretty!

My mom gets on to me especially during the winter time because I'll have sandals on...the slip on kind without the thong thingie. I wear a pair pretty much all year because I hate putting on socks and shoes. I'll run barefoot around the house, but not outside because of the neighborhood kitties & sometimes occasional loose dog.

Here is my funny moment though. While in college, I was one of the folks in charge of the floor in our dorm (RA). Well it is moving day for freshmen and we had to help them move in - hauling their crap, etc. Thankfully I only had to carry light stuff and only down to my floor because I had just injured my knee. Our first girl & her family arrived a day earlier (we already knew) and here they arrived. The other RA's hollered to come help...I had no clue it was the girl. Well here I go out there in tshirt, shorts, and oops, I forgot my shoes. All of the RA's went "are you pregnant?" because of the ole infamous phrase "barefoot and pregnant" that is common to here as a joke. Of course the family all sees me and the girl is from just outside of New York City. Wow - yeah...so that was her first impression of Kentucky. I said "oh Lord, excuse me, I was so excited to see that ya'll made it here, I forgot to put on my shoes" and ran to go grab them. I come back and the mom went "Well I have to say that was a first seeing someone barefoot!" Needless to say, the girl and I became great friends throughout our college lives. She is graduating this weekend with a PhD, but said that out of all the college experiences, the very first moment she came to our college had to be her most memorable. I said "Lord child, you had to have better memories than seeing some farm girl running around barefoot and not pregnant!"

Does anyone have problems with swollen feet? Any good remedies for it?

Go barefoot inside, not outside so much anymore, stepped on to many unnecessary things, like rocks, a piece of glass that darned yellow jacket that I am allergic too.
Guess I best leave my flip flops on outside....sigh......

I'm jealous. The summer camp I work at requires us to wear shoes or at least sandals with back straps at all times. I love working there, but Oh I miss my bare feet!

I hate "real" shoes. In summer (or warmer than 60 degrees) it's flip flops (I have some dress up kinds) or nothing. In winter or colder temps, its either my rennfest boots, moccasins or fuzzy socks. I kick off any shoes the minute I come in the door. Even when I worked in an office and a spa.

Right now at the computer - barefoot! As soon as the weather gets warm enough, I only wear sandals, or go barefoot. The bottom of my feet look like it too! Now, I read about the worm thing.......hmm.....maybe I will at least keep flip flops on all the time! Yuck! I remember my mom always saying "put your shoes on if you are going outside"! I use Ahava foot cream at night and sleep in socks. That softens them a lot, but I don't know if it would help parasites.

That reminds me...a co-worker had to have a toenail removed due to fungus. Her doctor told her people get these toenail fungi from going barefoot in the yard. The toenail won't grow back either. That freaked me out a little.

linda it does happen! people would be surprised at the whole worm thing. A generation ago it was common place for people to be dewormed! Many of todays illnesses are from parasites. There is a lady down the road that kept getting pneumonia. She had a parasite (aka worms) in her lungs. OK GROSS NOTE I know, I know

I do herbal foot baths once a week. Softens skin and cleanses parasites. So i am good to go....

I used to think barefooting was great until my stepmother, who always went barefoot went to the doctors because her feet were bothering her. The doctor opened the heal with a scapal and the worms came slithering out. Needless to say the other foot had the same things. She had to use a wheel chair to get around while the feet healed. No more barefooting for me.

Remember me as a rose.

LOL Same here, sitting at work with my shoes off and bare feet hiding under the desk. I NEVER wear socks unless I'm out hiking or horseback riding, and I always go barefoot inside, and wear open toed shoes year round when I'm out and about. Live is better barefoot, as I tell my boyfriend when he laughs at me for taking socks off the moment we get back from a hike.
