As I eluded to in other posts, my Nanna and Papa epitomized, at least my definition, of simple living. They lived in a little house that my Papa and his family built themselves. He had his little garden, loved Iced Tea and the NY Mets, loved to rock in his rocking chair (I own one to this day and I love to just sit and rock) and smoking his pipe and could always be found wearing his slippers. (He would try to wear them out, but Nanna always stopped him). He wore flip flops too ( I swear this is where I get it from!!!)  He also had a big 'ole bike he loved to ride (another attribute we have in common). He hated to see anything wasted or excess living. He grew up on a farm with 3 brothers and 1 sister, so I think he learned how to stretch the life out of everything.
Nanna was a firecracker in mules. She was always neat and clean and even a little glamorous to me (she smoked those long brown cigarrettes and she kept them in this sparkly case....oh la la!!) Her house was simple but pretty- she loved green and a little pink (again...I think I inherited this) and had an eye for simple chic. She always wore mules and had the best legs out there. She would bring me and my sister a bag 'o goodies each time they came to visit. It was filled with soaps, jewelry, just this and that's that little girls love. She was ultitamely feminine with a little drink a beer with the guys kinda gal attitude. I remember her pincurling her hair and keeping her pins in a little plastic pink container. She could do her whole head in minutes and my Papa used to help her apply her "hair color" with a toothbrush. How loving and cute!!! 
They owned one car and never had much but never wanted much either. They shared what they had and were friendly and loving. They never judged anyone, loved to visit and chat. At their funerals, the turn out was so huge, they ran out of room in the church.
I really do aspire to be like them or more so carry the essence of who they were, how they lived with me and pass that along to others, especially little Charlie.

Heather - Thank you so much for sharing your love for your grandparents with us. The concept of a "simple" life has become a buzz word in today's society to peg a person but I love when a friend of mine called it heart centered living... We have forgotten to live from the heart not the pocketbook. Thanks for sharing your heart with us.

I love simple...I really dislike how people misconstrue simple for poor, plain, or undesirable.
Dirt under my nails and weeds in my hair...don't tell me I can't dress up with flair! |

Heather, that was beautiful!
I loved my grandparents and an reminded at times when I reach to do a task of my Nana who taught me everything! My grandparents could make anything and wasted nothing.
Live that life and yes pass it on to your kiddos.

What a nice, inspiring story of love and kinship for and with family, friends and each other. We should all aspire to be the kind of people that would draw a huge crowd to see us off.

Sweetie, don't you know you are a living example of them now? That is exactly how you like to live your life and have proved it over and over, I know they are up there smiling down on you and so proud.

It is funny, because they are complete opposites of my other Grandparents- who hoarded, penny pinched, never shared and died with alot of money in the bank but led miserable lives. I definitely think it had a lot to do with their attitudes too.
