I, Alee, got this email from my sister. And before posting to the forum I tested it to make sure it is real- IT IS!!! ACK! If you want to test it make sure your phone number is in the ###-###-#### format. It needs the dashes to work.
: GOOGLE YOUR PHONE NUMBER
Google has implemented a new feature, which enables you to type a telephone number into the search bar and hit enter, and you will be given the person's name and address. If you then hit MapQuest, you will get a map to the person's house. Everyone should be aware of this! It's a nationwide reverse telephone book.
If a child gives out his/her phone number, someone can now look it up to find out where he/she lives. The safety issues are obvious, and alarming.
Note that you can have your phone number removed or blocked. I tried my number and it came up, along with the mapquest and directions straight to my house. I did fill out the removal form for myself, and encourage all of you to do the same. Quite scary.
In order to test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: google (http://www.google.com/ ) Type your phone number in the search bar (i.e. 555-555-1212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on your telephone number and then click on the Removal Form. Removal takes 48-hours.
Check your own number and, although this may not apply to you because you have an unlisted number, or cell phone as primary contact, you may know someone who needs to know this.

my number also led to directions to my home..scary! thank you alee..and thank you so much for verifying before posting..i get so many email warnings about things that turn out to be bogus..i emailed your warning to all of my friends and family members...

Thanks Alee. I e-mailed it to my sisters. They have pre-teenagers on the computers and need to be aware of this.

Well now these aftermarket setups are listing cell phone numbers..I know a year ago that wasn't happening yet..knew it would though since the telemarketers also started calling my cellphone. They're buying the list from someone. I always make a point to tell them to remove me from their calling list...just hanging up on them or saying "no thank you" will not accomplish anything towards stopping the calls.

I looked mine up and its funny cause about a year ago the phone company listed our address with a town that has a similar name but is about 150 miles from here! That is the city it lists.

hank and i popped up .. i don't mind though .. at my stage in life .. and down in this 'holler' .. olde friends might be able to re-connect with us. BUT .. i sure agree it might not be a great idea if you have little children. xo

its actually been like this for a year or so. It usually what you have in the phone book. If you list your adress or your phone number in the phone book it is considered public information and can be published anywhere!

I use a cellphone only BUT you can still pay to get my record...that has changed in the past 2 years...it was only landline phones that were showing up.
I've been online so much while designing my website and talking to folks that anyone could find me by typing in my name..just the nature of the internet..just about every conversation you type on the internet will show up sooner or later. All of the conversations at the MJ forum show up on the Message Board robot type sites...don't know the tech name for them but I've seen my posts listed.
So anyhow it's just more of our privacy being invaded but apparently there's no way to stop it. My dad was a Private Investigator back in the 80's and early 90's and he had to subcribe to and have a background check before being allowed to receive names and phones numbers for certain areas. So alot has changed.
I know that there is a website for "no calls" for the telemarketing..now I see that these private holders of info are charging a fee to us that don't want our info sold online.
So for the people out there who are living normal lives BUT ARE WANTED by the law for something..well, they can be found very easily.

If it comes up on there it probably comes up on www.whitepages.com I'm assuming it only lists listed numbers, if you're unlisted you should be safe.
