I needed to take a walk today, so I hoofed it to a St. Vincent DePaul store. It's about 20 minutes each way if I walk briskly. Then 20 minutes to shop and so much for my lunch hour. :) But today, I found something I was supposed to have nearly twenty years ago. This signed and numbered print was created by an old man who lived and painted in his sunroom close to a little golf course where my dad still plays and where I worked for a few years. Mr. Harry Duncan was a sweetheart of a man. He wanted to give me a print and he brought me a list of all his works and I picked the cardinal(my dh graduated from the University of Louisville, which is pictured in the background). Unfortunatly, that print had sold out, so I picked his bluebird one. He wrote a sweet note to me on it and signed it. Today, I walked into a thrift store and there it was, hanging on the back wall with a price of $6.00 on it. I got a chill. It's hanging in my office now.

Or find a wonderful frame in a thrift shop that is the right size. I've done that many times. The bigger and uglier the picture, even if the frame is wonderful, the lower the price.
Yes, thift shopping gets in the blood and does not change even when the financial need to shop there has passed. Bargains are even better, cause if you have a few bucks you can spend freely, you can get the stuff those in need aren't able to buy.

Janice you sure did get some great finds. haha - we could have bingo at Burlington. Now what fun would that be! That is a great find with your print. You could probably go to Michaels and get a mat & a frame cheaper than having them frame it...or you can use their 50% off coupon. Garden Ridge has some neat frames too. Which reminds me - I need some more!

That's funny, Nancy Jo. Because even if I had millions, I'd still shop at thrift stores. Where's the thrill and suprise in mall shopping? The biggest surprise is if I find a parking space in the same county. Before I went to the thrift store this week, I didn't even know it was time to change my office around. It's always such an adventure!

Janice,
See, now if only everyone understood that if you don't go to these stores often you miss out on the best things. Maybe this gents prints are worth millions! Then you go afford to go to the thrift everyday. I get the old people dicount on MONDAY. Its very nice while at the same time very depressing. HA.

Thanks a ton for that link, Jonni. I'm going to print out all that info. This print was apparently part of the work he did for Frame House Gallery. There was one here years ago, and it's on the bottom of the print. I just couldn't resist it. It's very pretty in person. Okay, I paid $7.20 for it. And I bet it's going to cost me a couple hundred to get it framed! But I like it enough to do it right. Oh well!

This old bingo stuff was in the sack I was carrying in my other hand. There are a lot of buttons mixed in with the old red things to cover the numbers with. I guess they ran out of little red things. I also got a front pocket tee shirt. I wear those a lot-a tissue and glasses fit so nice when I'm driving the tractor or weeding.
The weather was so nice today, I was forced to go back there on my lunch hour(one of those Nancy Jo Rules of Thrifting - Make sure to go on the nice days and never let a coupon expire. And I got a 10% discount today for being old, so that should count like a coupon, right?).
And look what I found today: Another beautiful bird print. This one is signed by someone named Arthur Singer and dated 1973. I just couldn't resist. So this means the new theme for my office is...ta da...BIRDS!!!!! I'm going to have to get this one framed. Unfortunately for my poor boss, even though some of the vintage paint by numbers will be coming down, I do have a couple of ones involving birds! LOL :D

I also got a black glasses holder that clips onto the pocket of the tee shirt I bought yesterday - holds my glasses in there when I bend over!

Janice - I dunno why I didn't see your picture until now, but that is a really pretty print and an interesting story to go behind it. I have a few little cardinal things here at the house as my old high school mascot was a cardinal. :)

That's very pretty. The birds are so lifelike, I think my cats would paw the glass and make that little chattering noise trying to get at them. LOL!

janis .. i saw this CARDINAL picture on my roamings to glover's station today and thought of your cardinal picture.

a lady had brought it up to the counter to buy .. only $15

the background is water colors .. the birds are THREE-DIMENSIONAL and hand-made completely out of RED feathers ... the 'grass' is also FEATHERS. it was lovely!

Nancy Jo - yes, the bluebird one is the same size. I had it matted and framed when he gave it to me. I'm thinking about bringing it here to my office, too. My poor boss was so excited yesterday. I let him take down the vintage paint by number that was hanging there. LOL! He just hates those! I've got several...

Ronna - It actually WAS VERY heavy to carry that distance. Of course, it wasn't the only thing I bought...I had a sack. So I was carrying the picture by the wire on the back. And it was soooo hot for what I was wearing. :D

Wilma - I'd love to go to Ronna's, but I'm almost afraid to be so tempted. ;) I've got a lot of stuff, myself!

Janice,
That was sure one walk worth taking. How odd to find something like that, and how lucky! So now you have both. Is the Bluebird one the same size?

As long as you come when my grouchy husband isn't home, come on out west. He's gone three weeks out of six, working in Alaska, so come before he decides to retire. I was moving some plants around today and realized I'd set one in a silverplate bowl that was given to "Dictograph Security Systems Queen of the Year" in 1971 at their convention in the Grand Bahamas. There are 11 lines of engraving, before it was done by machines. It's Poole Bristol Silverplate, and not of huge value, but very interesting. Oh, if you come, be prepared for two 10x20 storage units full to the door too. I need to do some serious unloading. Some really cool stuff, but too much. I know there's a very vintage typewriter near the door, another antique wicker baby buggy, many huge bags of good wool for recycling, umpteen wedding gowns, even more prom type dresses. sets of vintage silverplate flatware, sets of good vintage dinnerware from England, Poland, West Germany, etc. I should rent an empty store front and go into business to move all this stuff. Oh, did I forget many hundreds vintage linens, both new and stained/damaged. On and on, it's many years of collecting and buying. When should I expect you ladies?

you may not have known why you took that long walk, but it was there calling your name. I say that my vehicle automatically drives to whichever thrift shop I should be going to that day. Sometimes have to walk around a couple times to find it, but always happens. Aren't you lucky it wasn't something that weighed a ton for you to carry back to work! Congratulations on the wonderful find!

It was meant to be.
It is a beautiful print.
And there sits The Thinker in the back- UofL is my Alma Mater, too.
I'm glad to hear your first print had bluebirds instead of wildcats! ;)
