did you have an especially 'memorable' pet from your childhood?

i don't remember having pets. we lived in a 'row' house and i honestly don't remember any of our neighbors having pets either!

The only pets I was allowed to have at home was tropical fish (are they really considered pets????) My mom was a clean fanatic, so no pets. I played with all the animals at my grandparent's, aunt's, uncle's and cousin's houses. After I married and we had our own place, the first thing I got was a dog. Have had one or two ever since. Also cats, but no more tropical fish.

We had a doxie/terrier mix named Jiggs my whole childhood..we grew up together. He was a wonderful dog. And I always had some stray critter. I got baby chicks once in 7th grade and had them through high school..their names were Fonzie, Laverne and Shirley. Guess that dates me, right??? Shirley lived the longest and stayed at my granparents house until she died at 8 years old. Those were the first chickens of my very own, although I always helped my grandpa with animals at his place...chicks, pheasants, guineas and drop calves and he had alot of horses and kept ponies for us.

We had pets all the time and still do! We had a mother cat Judy who used to have her babies in my Grandmas linen closet. She also used to take off every summer for 3 months, we swear she had a second home. You guessed it she would come home pregnant. Our vet found homes for every one of the kittens. Then we had her fixed. There were always strays that came around. I had two special cats. One named Belinda, she was a grey persian with almond eyes. She was so tiny I just loved her.It took me weeks to get her to come to me,but once she did we were inseperable. Then I had a cat named Little Cat. She was a longhaired black and white one. We were best buds too. I love cats. My Aunt had a black cat named Jet, he was the sweetest cat, he actually let me dress him up in baby clothes and he would lay in the baby stroller and I'd push him.My Mom had a sweet cat named Ginny and we had her for years. She was there when we got our first doxie when I was 14. That was my first real dog lovey. His name was Scamp, he was bright red and he was a Scamp!! He lived until I ws 28. That was so hard. There were many more. But, I had better stop here! Oh oh, I just realized we were supposed to name one.

We had a schnauzer named Bailey.
He was so smart and good natured. He worshipped my Dad and would follow him around everywhere.
If you took him on a walk, no leash was necessary, he would stay right by you, even if another dog was near. In the winter when he would visit his buddy next door (a fellow schnauzer) if the snow drifts were too high to cut across the yards, he would walk along the drive way, down to the curb, along the curb and up Pepper's driveway. That was the only time he would go into the street.
He used to cry when we would leave in the morning for work and school, so we got another
Schnauzer named Molly, thinking he just was lonely and needed a buddy. She was sweet too, but very dumb. Well, he taught her how to cry too, so we had two little black dogs singing the blues in the kitchen every morning.
Bailey LOVED to play with dog toys and balls, so much so that he would gather them all in a pile and lay on them so Molly couldn't play with them.
Sadly, both eventually died due to kidney failure/diabetes. My Dad said after each one passed to the Rainbow Bridge that he cried more for the darn dogs, than when he lost his parents.

My folks had dogs (usually males and not spayed) and didn't keep them corraled and so there were many that just didn't come home. Being a single Mom, I didn't realize the importance of a pet. My youngest son and I were tending to my mother's yard while she was in the hospital. A pickup drove by and this little puppy fell out the back. She was so cute, but I didn't feel we could keep her so she went to the pound after three days with us. We realized that was a mistake and went back to get her and the pound (supposed to keep dogs for three days before adoption) couldn't find her. We finally found her at PetSmart and when she came back to the pound she was ours. I have had Penny for 10 years and I'm so glad she is mine. She is a Saluki/Border Collie mix. She is a sight dog, meaning any time we play fetch her eyes never leave the object we are tossing for her. I love, love, love her.

When I was little we must have been the rehabilitation stop on the stray cat highway. My mom and dad brought home a mama cat and her kittens who had been abandoned in the mountains. The mama cat, at some earlier point, had broken her front leg and it had set crooked. So Topaz always had a very regal pose as she sat, until you realized she wasn't posing, it was just her broken leg. She was a very sweet and loving cat who lived to be about 21 years old before dying of kidney failure. We had many other strays come to live with us, and a few litters of kittens born before we realized the cat was old enough to spay or neuter.

My parents also adopted a Brittany Spaniel who had been horribly abused. She was always shy and an outside dog. When I was little she seemed massive to me and my sisters and I would pretend she was a bear coming after us. I feel bad that I didn't lavish more attention on her, looking back.

Then we had a black lab Australian shepherd mix named Cricket. She was neurotic and would chase cars and we never could quite trust her around really little kids, but she was a good friend to me. My dad and I made a dog cart that I could sit in and cobbled together a harness for her. She would proudly pull me around and around our block and I would take her and the dog cart all the way across town to the public library to fill up on books during the summer. I even had her trained to pull with two leashes on her collar so I could direct her left and right.

Then my favorite childhood dog- my Seanee dog. Seanee was my parent's birthday present to me for my 13th birthday. She was the best present I think they have ever given me. A best friend, a shoulder to cry on, a point of pride, and an outlet for all of my passion for animals. Seanee was a lab mix who was faithful almost to a fault. If I left her behind she would throw herself at the door trying to follow me, and she would sit on the deck all day watching for my return from school. We entered dog 4-H when she was only about 4 months old, and entered the fair when she was about 9 months old even though the dogs are supposed to be one year old, the judges gave up an exception. We won Reserve Grand Champion and her only derogatory mark on her show papers was "She's too puppyish". Seanee had to be left behind when I went to college and it broke my heart, but she was a wonderful dog for my parents who's dog (Cricket) finally passed away a few years ago.

I had several cats and a couple dogs as a kid. The cats were cats...But the one dog was a St. Bernard named Evie. My sister and I would use her as a pillow to watch tv. We also put our child-size lawn chairs in her dog house and used it as our "club house". She was a fun dog. She had this little thing that when someone she liked came over, she would go get a mouthful of water and then lay her head in their lap and let the water dribble out! Grandma got the "love" treatment all the time and would always bring a thick towel to lay over her lap.

Then, there was Monkey. She was a black cocker spaniel with brown markings and her face actually looked like a monkey. Monkey was diabetic and Grandma would give her candy to control it and then brush her teeth. She actually liked having her teeth brushed. Monkey always got into my Halloween bag every year (I let her). She was my buddy at Grandma's house.

Before any major developing went on, the woods and creeks were my playground

I was constantly bringing home animals.

My mother was quite tolerant and even let me keep snakes in my room....just little garter snakes

Aside from all the creepy crawlies, my most memorable pet was my cat Fran. She was all black and lived to a ripe 'ole age of 17! The day I got her I cried all the way home because I knew she was going away from all she knew to be famillar. That -and I was so happy too. I still have her picture on our frige and her ashes in a box. We have 2 cats now. One is again all black. I think black cats have good dispositions. Most all I have ever come across have been lovey and so personable.

My first dog, Abby was special too. I literally dreamed -from the time I was 10- to the present about getting a Belgian Shepherd. In 1998 that dream became a reality. Abby came at a critical time in my life and was a best friend and great therapy. We lost her 2 years ago. She and the farm dog Molly are buried on the hill. Each have grave markers made by one of our potter friends. Abby's marker also has a ceramic tennis ball on top for decoration. She was always "herding" up a ball.

Now Jasmine came along a little over a year ago. She is also a Belgian and shares an equal passion for herding tennis balls. For some reason she also likes chasing the turkey vultures that swoop around on windy days. Jas has picked up the habit of "escorting" military planes and choppers. We live in a fly zone. So a few times a month when troops and equipment are being transported, we get the big huge cargo planes and the occasional fighter jet buzzing right over the house. I always go running out of the house and wave a bandana. Guess Jas wants in on the action too.

Whoever says aminals lack emotion certainly hasn't taken the time to really observe.

I'm sure others of us out there hve quirky pets

Hmmm...we weren't allowed to have pets until I was 12, which was horrible because I loved them from the time I could remember and I envied anyone who even had a hamster for a pet. My father was a pathologist and he swore that animals were just "carriers for diseases and parasites" (of course, this could also be because he was from a country that really looked down upon owning cats and dogs)...so, we couldn't have one until a stray Maine Coon cat followed me home. She was so smart she won my parents over.
