Ok, I use my cell phone for everything and have it with me 24/7. I get a phone call that came in as no name. I have to answer all calls as it may be someone calling about Charlie or hubby calling from a port (sailor phone) and I don't want to miss it. It is (supposedly) my CC company but the woman's english was so bad I seriously could not understand her. I really did try. She was just talking and I couldn't make out a thing she said. I asked to why she was calling, then asked to speak to someone else, as I was truly having a hard time trying to understand her. She kept talking, which of course made me more frustrated and I kept asking to talk to someone else. Then I asked her to confirm my information, to make sure that it wasn't a scam. NOPE- still couldn't understand her. I asked her one more time to get someone I could understand or I was hanging up. She kept right on talking....so I hung up!!!

Now, I understand people have to work for a living and my gosh, my accent is hard to understand sometimes too, but I would not just ignore someone's request to speak with someone else if they could not understand me.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!

Ok...moving on...needed to vent....

Thanks!!! I am back to my happy self.

Cheers,
Heather

Thanks for the tip on the DO NOT call list!
Our number is unlisted and is private. We were on the do not call list originally, but as we all know that ran out.
About 5 weeks ago I started getting those annoying calls wanting to reduce our credit card debt. I have caller ID and noticed, that the number that was calling, was different from the number they'd leave on my answering machine. (funny thing that!)
After a few weeks of getting these calls, 2 and 3 days in a row, I started calling the number back that showed up on the caller ID, NOT the 800# they would leave.
I kept getting the SAME bad music recording at first (irritation), and the SAME half english speaking women (BIG irritation). I demanded they take my number off their list and immediately she would hang up. We played this game two more times that day, and then the next day when she called. Funny thing was, this particular day, I was NOT going to give up.
She'd hang up, and I'd call her right back. It was my dime at that point. Figured what's good for the goose is good for the gander in this one. After the 4th call I'd made to her, someone else..a man picked up the phone, and did NOT give the normal 'speil' that the women was giving. I knew then..something fishy was going on.
I told him specifically, take this number off your call list, call me ONE more time and I will report you and bring you up on harrasment charges! (I was HOT!)..guess what..no more calls and it's been 2 weeks.
Here's the kicker..they wanted to get all my information on my credit cards to help me reduce debt. They picked the wrong cookie..one..we dont' have any credit card debt..thank goodness, and the one card I do have is put aside for emergencies only should we happen to have one therefore that number does NOT go out. PERIOD. And two..unsolicited calls only make me MAD..and I do mean REALLY MAD!

I personally don't think it is right for people with very thick accents to be put on phone duty. It is very difficult for the caller themselves to try and get the point across to the people they call. They must get very frustrated. I totally agree that legal immigrants should have jobs, just not ones where the public can't understand them, wait until they can speak English well enough. And as for feeling like you're deaf, some people do have trouble hearing even in the best of circumstances. I am one of them. If you purposely ask to speak to someone who you can understand better then I think they should kindly give the phone to someone else. When my husband retired it was a nightmare trying to get things taken care of over the phone with the company he worked for.We both were so nervous that we weren't getting the infomation right because we couldn't understand the rep on the phone. I know I may get alot of flack from this statement, but I do feel if you are going to live and work in America you should learn to speak English well enough to be understood. I know if we moved to another country, we would learn to speak there language.

Patricia- I do understand people have to make a living and it must be hard when they pay nothing to sit on a phone for 8 hours calling Credit card holders, but, after asking her multiple times to please let me speak to someone else because I could not understand her. I spent 6 1/2 years in the military and a lot of time overseas, but this particular woman was VERY hard to understand. I have lost my ear for it too since I am not around it as much. Trust me, there are some people down here in Texas that I can't understand.

Heather

It sounds like this could be a case of outsourcing to another country. Remember to vote!
I try to remember that unless you are a native american, you or your family were immigrants at one point. Collections is not a fun job either.
I am really good at understanding accents, due to previously working at a job with lots of different ethnicities. It's not that hard if you try to think about content matter and similar sounding words. R's and L's are hard to say and interchanged often.

We finally got caller ID (which I SWORE I would never do) because some bumpkin has used our telephone number to as an "alternate" to apply for countless credit cards and then default on them. One of the bill collectors made the mistake of providing me with his mailing address a few miles from my home, so I now know where he lives (if he hasn't skated that place, too).

Yesterday, on the caller id, it appeared that we had called ourselves, and, viola, it was a creditor looking for this bumpkin head again.

I'm personally not a fan of the telephone at all...we hardly answer it :)

I had a call like this today, only it was for work. I had a person call from one of our customers looking for an invoice for an order we didn't receive or ship. I am not sure where her accent was from.

She just didn't get it that perhaps she may need to contact her warehouse and see if they shipped it inter-store to store.

I tried to be patient with her because at least she was trying to speak clearly; she just wasn't successful at it.
I wish I could tell her boss, that she needs to be more clear on the phone or perhaps she needs to have someone else in her department do these types of calls.

I love the ones who are answering their text messages on their cell phone. I mean, really, is that really necessary?

The next time that happens, I am just going to walk away.

These speaking issues are not limited to just phone calls. I've been face to face with retail people, especially teens and 20-somethings, and haven't been able to understand them either. And, when you ask them to repeat they act like you're deaf. Very annoying.

It's easy to get your phone number on the no call list. In your search box type "National No Call List." Then choose "National Do Not Call Registry." On that site click on "Register a Phone Number." Then you put in your information, and that's it. I haven't been getting any telemarketers since I signed up. Good luck.

I have been making all my payments, just one CC we have I accidentally mixed up the date and missed the payment by a week. But I paid in full for the original amount but the charges killed us and I can't keep sending $$$$$ each month to them, but I am keeping up with at least paying them. I have tried to handle this by phone and they just want their money. I will try your ideas Alee. This is why people who try do be honest with CC payment/debt end up being lumped in with the people who never pay.

Heather

I think it is really important to know your rights through the FTC. Here is what you need to do to stop the calls whether a legitimate claim or not:

*~*Act like you are going to send them a payment.

*~*Get their Companies' name, address, phone number, fax number and any reference number that they might have.

*~*Send a letter demanding a "Cease communication via telephone." Send the letter with return receipt so you know when they received it.

*~*Call the FTC and open a complaint against the company if they have called you more than once.

*~*If they contact you again after they have received the cease communication letter, contact the FTC again as huge fines will be levied against them.

I have done this with debtors that I just can't pay right now, but that were harassing me endlessly. Even the threat of a cease communication letter and a complaint to the FTC has stopped the calls completely.

I feel there is no reason why we should accept rudeness on the phones, but I try really hard not to put rudeness back when they dish it out. I figure it is much easier to be rude than to be nice- and perhaps talking to one nice person each day might help turn them around.

I know it is hard when you can't understand the person on the phone at all. If I can't understand a word I simply said "I'm sorry we must have a bad connection as I am having a hard time understanding you" and then hang up.

Hope some of those tips help!

i have been having an annoying and rude call lately on my home phone from an attorney office called "riddle and riddle". they are calling about a debt from 2000, for a fran HOOTER (that is not me).
and they talk over me and wont let me say anything.
i called the district attorney of my county and he said
to tell them to mail me the info that i wont make payments over the phone.
so the next time they called i said,"i am recording this conversation on the advice of my county attorney. any contact between us needs to be via the mail."
she was of course rude and said the district attorney was wrong.
i suspect that she didnt have my mailing info and i'm not providing it.
this was over a sprint bill and i have never had a sprint cell phone.
anyway i googled this attorney and was horrified over what i read about them on the web.
i guess folks need an income but i would rather be a great ditch digger than to make my income by falsely harrassing people.
i thin the best solution is to just hang up. if they have a legitimate debt they can communicate by mail. all this harrassing needs to stop and if we dont even give them a voice maybe it will. FARMGIRLS UNITE!

I have all my numbers on no call but with CC's who have my number, via the CC's themselves, I cannot stop them from calling other than asking them not to call. Does that make sense?????

I am mostly upset by the whole lack of understanding of her part...or my part??? HA!! I am so tired right now. She just kept talking and talking and talking!!!

Cheers,
Heather

do you gurlz know that there is a NO CALL number you can contact .. and get on a DO NOT CALL list (it is actually ILLEGAL for telemarketers to call you and the company gets a WHOPPING fine if they are caught). we are on the both the lists for 'home' and 'cell' phones. i no longer have the number to contact .. but perhaps one of the other farmgirls does? i've NEVER gotten a telemarketer call since signing up for this list. (it's FREE).

I am glad to see someone else has trouble understanding a lot of the telemarketers!! I honestly can't understand just about any of them. What really irks me too is that they just won't listen to you when you say that you are not interested, they just talk right through you. When that happens I do hang up. Same thing with charities asking for money. I tell them we don't give any more and they just keep calling and sending out junk mail. I hang up on them too.

Those who speak "perfect English as taught" but don't comprehend what you try to say to them are very irritating. I cancelled a credit card with a dept store and was so glad to have a choice of ISP besides AOL for just that reason.
My biggest irritation now are the "get out of debt" and vehicle warranty calls that come at least several times a day. Pushing the number to be taken off their call list doesn't help and if you try to get to a person for that purpose, they hang up. One company wanted to extend the warranty on my mothers 1989 car that's been sitting for 3 1/2 years.
Phone calls I haven't initiated on my cell phone get disconnected really fast..why should I use minutes I pay for to listen to a sales pitch.
If I answer the phone, home or cell, and don't hear a voice right away, it is hung up. My phone, my dime :) yes, with inflation, my 50 cents if it was a pay phone.

Heather,

I try not to be rude when this happens, but when I can't understand someone that is calling because of out sourcing to another country, I just say, "I am sorry I can't understand you. Good Bye" I agree I want everyone to work that can and are willing to work, but please have someone call that can speak clear english if that is the country they are calling. Same for other countries---mexico-Spanish---etc.Believe me my Spanish would NOT be accectable in Mexico.
At least coach them on appropiate professional telepone useage

PS-----this happens to be a pet peeve for me
