I'm beginning to think my insomnia is a menopausal thing. Any of you gals had insomnia while going through the change? I'm waking in the middle of the night with those danged hot flashes. I was only getting them in the morning for the longest time. Now that I get them at night too, I wake up, throw the covers off and lay awake until I can't stand it and have to get up. So, here I am at 3:45. It's hardly worth even trying to go back to bed; I have to be up at 5:30 anyway. I wish the change would just change and be done with it!

Hi Girls,
I was just gifted with some more information that I wanted to pass along to you. Can you tell that I'm driven at the moment? LOL!
This is a link for a book that I'm told is exceptional. And then a link for an herbal tincture that a friend is using that is helping her with her transition.
FYI, the lady who runs this website is very wordy, so don't get intimidated by all the info she's sharing. If it gets to be too much, feel free to navigate away until you get to the meat of the info your looking for...enjoy!

Sherrie..you are so right...oldest daughter is doing the puberty thing..and next one is coming up. These are some of the youngest of my 7kids..but still....I am 49 and can't complain much about this sort of thing yet. I didn't start my periods until I was 15 so maybe this will be late too. I sure hope. I am glad I know who to ask when I need the help. My sister is 18 month younger than me and is in the middle of menopause..man!!

I just keep trying to remember that eventually this too shall pass. I have been dealing with this stuff for 8 years now and your absolutely right Stephanie about the docs. They use statistics. My female doctor told me I was too young but here I am in the throes of menopause whether she believes it or not. I use a multi vitamin and wild yam cream. no synthetic progesterone. Also a good book which if some one is interested is What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause by Dr. John Lee He also has What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Peri-menopause. I recommend them. Lots of good information.

Wow, that interesting. I just planted spinach inside. Oh well, I can feed it to my family. What is sweet lassi? I just bought some basmati, but I haven't used it yet.

Here's the list of foods, spices etc. to incorporate in your diet. These will cool your body temperature.

Dairy: Butter, ghee(clarified butter), sweet lassi, milk
Sweeteners: All ok except honey & molasses.
Oils: Coconut, olive, soy & sunflower oil
Grains: Barley, oats, wheat & white rice (like basmati)
Fruits: Sweet ripe fruits only, such as:
apples, avacados, cherries, figs, mangoes, melons, pears, pomegranites, prunes & raisins.
green grapes, oranges, pineapples & plums ONLY IF SWEET AND COMPLETELY RIPE
Vegetables: Apsaragus, bell peppers, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, green beans, leafy green all ok except spinach. Okra, peas, potatoes, sweet potatoes, sprouts, summer & winter squash.
Spices: sweet, bitter, astringent spices such as: cardamom, cinnamon, cilantro, coriander, small amounts of cumin and black pepper, dill, fennel, mint and saffron.
Nuts & Seeds: limit to only coconuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds
Beans: Garbanzo, mung (moong dal) soybeans & tofu

OK, that's it I hope this helps!

Since so many of you have expressed an interest in the big list, I'm typing it out here. FYI, I was at the OB/GYN yesterday and told her what I was doing and she told me to keep doing it because it was working! WooHoo!

Here you go...

This is a list of foods, spices etc. that you should avoid. They create heat in your body.

Avoid super hot baths and liquids.
Avoid salty, sour and pungent foods and spices
Avoid Cheese, cutured dairy products such as buttermilk, sour cream and yogurt except in sweet lassi.
Avoid honey & molasses
Avoid Almond oil, corn oil, saflower & sesame oil
Avoid corn, millet, brown rice & rye
Avoid sour unripened fruits such as apricots, berries ,bananas, cranberries, grapefruits, olives, papayas, peaches and persimmons
Avoid these vegetables: Beets, carrots, chilies, eggplant, garlic onions, radishes, spinach & tomatoes
Avoid these spices: All pungent herating spices. Chilies should be avoided.

Next list is the stuff that's good for you!

Ha! Patricia, that's funny. Linder, I would be interested in that list of foods and spices, too. I'll try that on top of the black cohosh (if I remember to take it). I'm much better at remembering to eat!

I noticed changes about 5 years ago. I'll be 45 next month. Skipped cycles, prolonged cycles, multiple cycles in the same month, occasional insomnia for no apparent reason, irritable-ness at little, insignificant, even stupid things. The hot flashes I was getting in the mornings started last year. These at night just started this past weekend. I didn't mind the "morning flashes" so much, because I always take my first cup of tea outside anyway and the cool or even cold air felt great. But the night time ones are soooo inconvenient and disruptive.

One of my friends here suggested hormone pills. I won't even consider going there. I strongly believe that route is not good for us. Besides that, I have a real beef with the pharmaceutical companies. But that would be another thread...

Linder, my mom passed when I was 21. And at that age it never occurred to me to even ask about this stuff. So, I really appreciate all you gals' advice and support.

I really wish God had given us a switch to turn this all off when we were done with it! It would make it sooooo much easier.

Amen to that one Stephanie!
I have a female OB/GYN and she is a dream!
It was recommended that I read the book on menopause by Dr. Chistine Northrup. I'm told it is the most comprehensive and helpful book out on menopausal issues.
Honestly, I'd rather read a romance but that's not gonna help with the hot flashes...or is it? LOL!

Well here it is 1:46am my time and I'm awake...usually am until 2:30 or 3am....haven't had a decent nights sleep in about 5 years...woohoo!! Hot flashes! Night sweats! Memory issues! Let's see I know there's more but I can't remember..LOL

Just hanging in there waiting for the next "shift" to occur...anytime now would be nice...It's officially been a year since my last period so I guess I can now say I'm in "menopause"...the doc's crack me up when they look at me and say, oh, your still in peri-......when a male doc makes that statement it's just hilarious...they have no clue other than their statistics to go by so it's very lacking in compassion and they really have no understanding of it.

It's been a long day and now I'm ranting...sorry..just had to vent since the subject allowed

Hi Lisa,
Sorry to get back to you so late today. I've been under the weather with my own female issues and have been in bed. Ugh. Makes for a loooong day.
In answer to your question I occasionally have bouts of insomnia and it's usually when my body is running really hot. Maddening because I'm up and down all night and can't seem to get comfortable or get any quality sleep.
As far as the peri-menopause question goes, I started at about 40 with hot flashes and these crazy surges of emotion where I was just SO angry! Couldn't figure out what it was and really scared myself with a few outbursts, which is not like me at all. A friend enlightened me. That's how it all started for me. Now my sister though who is 5 years younger than me started when she was around 36, so I think it really depends! Have you asked your Mother when she started?
Sherri, unless everyone here wants to see the whole list, I'll send you an independant e-mail. Basically they're foods, oils and spices that cool your body temp down. It takes a few days to a week to kick in but it really works.

Emme- I was told it can start up to 10 years prior to menopause. My Mom started around 42-42, and I am 34, so this seems to be about right.

Cheers,
Heather

So, how old were you when you first started feeling any changes? I'm 36 and people say I'm too young, but I'm starting to think I'm feeling something. It may be just my body getting back to normal after 4 kids in 8 years and nursing almost the whole time!

That's funny, Jess. :) I'll have to start singing that song. I have insomnia, too. I read somewhere that taking a mulit vitamin helps insomnia, so I tried and it does seem to help a lot. My hot flashes get worse when I have too much sugar or caffeine, so I'm trying to leave that out as much as possible.

Here is a funny for you guys in regards to the change. One of my friends thought the song "chain of fools" said "change change change...change of fools." When she went through the change, she kept singing it as a joke after finding out the real lyrics. Now I'm not saying any of ya'll are fools, but I thought I would give you a giggle. Every time I see the word change I think of her singing that song. When she did go through the change with hot flashes, she just kept a fan on during the night. It helped it some noise in the background and kept her cool. It was funny when a bunch of us went on a roadtrip and it snowing outside and here she is carrying a small fan to sleep.

What were you peri-menopausal symptoms? I am 34 but I get this occasional hot flash where my body seems to heat up for no reason-not a lot of sweat but boy, it is uncomfortable. My sleep has been messed up for the past 3 years (not from the kid either ; ))

Thanks.

Hmmm, I eat most of those on a daily basis. I guess I'll just have to remember to take the black cohosh again. It helped a lot before. I just have a hard time remembering to take anything that's like a pill.

My body just made a monumental shift and it's like somebody else is living here! I've been peri-menopausal for about 7+ years but about 2 weeks ago it shifted and my hot flashes and night sweats have become VERY uncomfortable. In an effort to get my body into agreement I did some research on the web and found some foods that naturally cool the body down. I also use a natural progesterone cream (progest) that helps with all of this. Here's the list of foods and supplements that help:
Lettuce
cucumbers
apples
oranges
grapes
cilantro
asparagus
broccoli
celery
brussel sprouts
potatoes
sweet potatoes
sprouts
summer & winter squash
I've got a more extensive list. If you'd like it let me know!
