How do you Ladies handle Cravings and living so far away from resturants and grocery stores? No, I'm NOT preggers but I really wanted Chinese food tonight and had to drive 1/2 an hour to get some and drive home. My family and I were talking about this tonight.

heather .. we are about half an hour (20 miles one way .. 30 the other) from good dinners (we can get to lunch in greensburg in about 15 minutes!) ... and if and when we have those cravings .. we jus' consider it part of country living .. and get in the car and DRIVE and fill our bellies! xo

sometimes we will go a little early and hit Barnes and Noble bookstore or a coupla' other shoppes too!

Yesterday I had a craving for McDonalds cheeseburgers Yuk!! Not preggers. Just need a junk food fix. So I drove the 15 miles to get one. I did how ever stop at a few thrift stores on the way. I guess that was how I justified my trip. Most of the time I try to keep my cupboard stocked with items that I can make fast and easy. Rachel Ray has some really good fast food type recipes and a list of items to keep on had to help fix them.

Beings I'm originally from Cincinnati, I of course crave Skyline Chili

Luckily these days it comes in cans and is almost as good.

So whenever my folks travel that way, I send a huge wad of cash for them to pick up a case.

I can make a version fron scratch but its nowhere close to the original!

I really learned how to cook. I know that sounds simple, but I just wrote down all the things I loved about the food I craved and worked out some recipes. It really helps when I can make an awesome steak, loaded potatoes and garden salad with yummy ranch at home and I can keep the price lower.

Cheers,
Heather

If you google search "copycat recipes" you will get lots of recipes!Beware browsing here will make you hungry :)

Here is the recipe I like best for Crab Rangoon, http://www.recipezaar.com/10712
However the kraft website has a baked one that I have been using lately to reduce the fat, not as good but not bad either.

Heather we are 20 minutes from ANYTHING. Not even a gas station in our area. I keep the pantry pretty well stocked- just in case!

I usually go the next day at lunch or when i'm off

We live 20 miles from any good sit down restaurant and nearly 30 if we want a beer w/ our dinner

I often crave hot wings or crusty bread like Panera

The only thing I really crave are the bbq beef ribs from Alex Barbque in Shell Beach Calif. Oh my. They are a bit of my childhood and I love them. I have tried to copy their sauce..and get close..but of course can't cook them the way they do, can't get good beef back ribs here for some reason and it just isn't the same. Oh my. Sometimes you just need the real thing. I had some in April last year when we were out there..and have thought about them ever since.

That does sound like a great cookbook, Tina! That's the only thing I like about Red Lobster is those cheese biscuits :)

That sounds like a great cookbook Tina! I crave IHOP's Swedish pancakes all the time - I have a recipe for Swedish pancakes, but it's nowhere near as good as IHOP's.

Well, I don't know if this will help, but when I have a craving for Italian Garden's lemon cake, Red Lobster's scampi or their cheese biscuits, or something else like that, I search through a really neat cookbook called "Top Secret Restaurant Recipes #1 or #2" by Todd Wilbur. There are other copycat recipes in the book too - like Applebee's, Outback, Ihop, P.F. Changs and on. They are very close to the real thing and really don't take that long to make. Step by step instructions are shown too.

OH my gosh - this happens to me all the time when I'm at the cabin. The closest restaurant and store are about 40 miles away, so it's not really an option to satisfy that craving when it hits! (Especially at current gas prices.) Last summer, I craved a vanilla milkshake SO bad you would have thought I was preggers. I wracked my brain to see what I could make that would satisfy that craving and what I came up with was some boxed soy milk, vanilla flavored, and some ice in our freezer, with a little sugar and a little more added vanilla, blended in my VitaMix. Understand, we don't have refrigeration and my method for keeping my food somewhat cold while I was there in the hot summer was to run the freezer off the generator for a few hours a day, just enough to freeze water in milk jugs, then use those frozen milk jugs to cool the food in my camping cooler. When I made the "milkshake" I just froze water in an ice cube tray, then used it (only half frozen) to thicken and "freeze" my milkshake, A long laborious process which took entirely too much time, but was gobbled up greedily when it was done! It's amazing what you can come up with when you're far from the store!

Alright, Heather...I'm all about food...but honestly, the only thing I EVER crave is Zamarelli's Pizza in Grove City, Ohio--in fact, you're not very far from there, so you should eat it, too . Hands down the best and my favorite pizza on the planet. If I want one, I go get one--of course, I make an excuse to drive the two hours north, and also go the best thrift store I've ever been to, but seriously, I'll drive across the world for Zammy's!

Additionally, if I know someone is heading up that way, I'll make them stop by and get a carryout pizza and I pay them for it. It's OH so good the next day :)

We live close to restaurants, but my husband doesn't like their food as much as mine, so I've learned to stock my pantry with curry's and fish sauces and any other ethnic things we like. The only thing I can't replicate is those yummy crab rangoons!!!
