This is kind of a long story. But a great one. Thirty years ago I started finishing the last quilt top my grandmother pieced. It was pieced of her own housedresses. Well, I never finished that project.
Now, comes the good part. Through MaryJanes Farm, I found a Mennonite friend who has a business finishing quilts and making custom quilts. I sent my grandmother's quilt to her, and one of her Amish friends finished it for me! I had the backing, and had started it, but now it is done at last! And beautiful.
Today I got it in the mail, and I felt like my grandmother was standing there with me as I opened the box. IT IS SO GORGEOUS!!!!! At last, I can use my grandma's quilt, and hand it down to my family. Even though I never finished it, I know my grandmother would approve of the way I had it done....by women who cherish the art as much as she and I.

It is an honest and good group of women. And their work is impeccable. I could write a story about this experience! It would include my grandmother and her talents, MaryJane and the impact that comes from being part of this forum, and the fact that I made a new friend who loves quilting as much as I.
I am so excited, check my blog for a photo. Meanwhile I will post one here, too. This one is of the quilt, one of my favorite baskets, and a sampler I did in memory of my grandmother.

Jeannie, your story is so heartwarming. And the quilt is amazing! I love those colors. What a wonderful gift to have this piece of history for your very own.

I posted a photo of the quilt and more of the story on my blog. I will try to post another photo tomorrow. But go and see!
OH, and go to the top to see a photo I inserted of the quilt and the sampler I made in her memory. I love to stitch old looking samplers, and then I put the name of various people in my family. I have one for my grandma, my mother, my daughter, hubby and my 20th anniversary, and for my daughter's birthday (July 4), etc. and so this is the one I did for grandma - it has the date of her birth in 1891.

Zan - yes I was just two but quite advanced for my age at that time! :)
Girl, I have been married for thirty years, have a 28 year old daughter, and two grands! But in all that time, I could never finish this quilt....how bad is that? I am so happy with it, and taking photos today and going to have a CD made, since I do not have a digital camera. Photos soon!
Thinking that I do not have a digital camera makes me feel behind the times...however....the Amish lady who quilted for me has no phone. She lives in Wisconsin, right over the border from Minnesota. They have had so much snow this winter, that she could not get the horse and buggy out to go places (too hard on the aninals to make them pull a buggy in the zero temps I was told), so all she did was work on quilts. Still I do not know how she got all that quilting, by hand, done in basically three months.
When I was talking to the owner of the business, Ruby, she said she handles all calls and organizing of details with customers and such because she is the only one with a phone. She is Mennonite, but not Old Order. Now I am glad to call her my friend, too.

What an amazing gift, Shirley--thank you so much for sharing that with us. Surely your gran was beaming, just like you when you pulled that quilt out of the post.
