Ok, as I lay here in bed trying to assemble my body for the day I was thinking what do you all do for energy? Coffee, food, drinks, meditation, etc? I am curious to learn and hear!!!

A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a tall glass of ice cold water perks me right up. It has lots of other benefits too, but I drink it mostly for the pick me up.

Working 40 hours a week on top of being a full time college student, energy is always in short supply and high demand for me. I saw the title for this thread and thought 'I have to read that!!!' LOL One thing I thought I could throw in here for the discussion is an interesting little thing I found out about coffee. I practically live off the stuff, but in one of my classes I took at school, we learned a bit about how sleep, or the lack thereof, can have huge affects on our academic and work performance. It was noted that caffiene can linger in the bloodstream for up to 12 hours after consumption! I realized that was a huge part of why I was having soo much difficulty getting myself out of bed in the mornings -- I wasn't sleeping deeply and getting the REM sleep my body needed to rejuivinate because I still had stimulants running through my body. Now I've started limiting my coffee intake to before 10:30 am, so it's all out of my system in time for me to get a good night's rest. I have really noticed an improvement in the quality of my sleep since I've started doing this, and in turn, it's easier to get going in the mornings!

I'm with Debra and the other green smoothie enthusiasts. While coffee is an absolute favorite, it's also a diuretic and it strips the calcium and many other vital minerals from your body. It's especially hard on the adrenals. You might want to do some research on adrenals to see if you fit the profile for Adrenal Fatigue...a great book to read is "Adrenal Fatigue, The 21st Century Stress Syndrome" by James L Wilson, N.D., D.C., Ph.D.
The green drinks, the RMVJ made with apples, carrots, celery, cuc's or zucch's, garlic & lemon, plus some others from juicer recipe books, or a product from Brenda Watson called "Fit Smart Shake" made with Xylitol, give me the most consistent energy...steady, long-term endurance type energy w/o causing blood sugar fluctuations. I still have my one cappuccino in the morning, but it's closely followed by a "Fit Smart Shake" or a Raw Mixed Vegetable Juice or a green drink. I used to do the "Fit For Life" suggestion; nothing but fresh fruit till noon, but it really caused blood sugar issues. I still have the fruit with the Fit Smart Shake, but it has the added benefit of incredible protein and a good amount of fiber. I've had better results with that or a raw mixed vegetable juice or green smoothie made fresh, than any other breakfast meal in my 48 years. I use 1 Co-Q-10 (30mg) & an L-Carnitine (500mg) when I need a boost in the afternoon. A 30-45 min walk or some form of daily exercise is a big factor in how well you sleep @ night and can make a difference in your energy level the next day. None of it is "fun" unless you love those activities, which I do, but with a commitment to your well-being & a 30 day goal to build the habit, you'll probably notice a difference in your level of energy.

I am SO not a morning person..but I have found that if I stay up once I get up..not sit down I mean..that I sort of kick myself in gear that way...I never drink coffee, but just getting fresh air and water in the morning will usually get me going. I have to get up to get the kids off to school and if I work (substitute teacher at the elementary school) I have to be there by 8am so that gets me going.

I have been getting into walking to wake myself up in the morning and to get some exercise before the start of a busy day depending on the weather. I also try to get my phone calls out of the way first thing and that usually gets me awake. haha.

I always have to get up quickly to get the kiddos off to school. Since it is out of district and 30 minutes away, we don't have much option . . . which is great. I seem to have kind of an "internal clock" that wakes me up around 6 am every morning. I notice on the days I sleep longer I have MORE problem getting going . . . things just stiffen up and I feel older than I am! So for me, getting up early and going right away is important. I also walk each morning after I get the kiddos to school, which helps up the energy level. I have given up caffiene (though I cheat occasionally . . .) so usually for me it is tomato or vegetable juice to start the day. I also do oatmeal as it makes me feel full and comfortable. Plus it is supposed to lower chloresterol. And, getting to bed on time helps to give me the energy in the morning!

they do make all the difference in the world. I also only eat fruit in the morning- except for the greens- they digest as quickly as fruit does so you can mix them. I make a huge pitcher after giving the kids their smoothies- then I stick it in the fridge. We drink it for lunch..yum.

I agree with Debra on the smoothies. I am giving up caffeine and they have been helping tremendously. Also, I like to take my shower and finish it off with a quick cold rinse...wakes me up and gets me going!!!

I use a combo of frozen and non frozen bananas- you don't miss the yogurt or milk. If you do spinach and bananas you will not taste the green I promise you! and you get all that iron..

Sounds interesting, Debra. I make smoothies with plain yogurt with bananas and berries (blueberries or strawberries). I'll have to venture out and try the 'green'! This is not as healthy, but I've had chocolate Soy milk and added a few spoonfuls of powered chocolate Ovaltine. Delicious!

I have given up coffee been almost a week. I do get tons of energy from my green smoothies! IN a blender throw in spinach, romaine, kale, parsley- whatever greens you have- just not bitter ones. I use spinach and parsley mainly but buy Kale when on sale. fill with enough water to blend this up (I do a whole blender full of greens- it collapes to about half full once blended up). Add frozen berries, bananas, mangos etc.. and more water to blend. you can't taste the green- well with the parsley you can taste a fresh taste but the bananas overpowers most else.
Today I made celery/Orange juice. we all had a cup of this, then we used the rest of the juice to the smoothies. I added more oranges, mangos, bananas, spinach and parsley. It was very good. We having it for lunch too.. I keep a case of bananas on the counter for noshing inbetween meals.

Once I get moving, I can usually stay moving. Just overcoming the inertia of sitting is the tough part for me.

I MAKE myself go out and walk in the morning and it gets me grounded for the day and centered spiritually as well.
Too bad I don't have an IV of GO juice hooked up to help me out of bed though. LOL!

coffee usually does the trick. NPR on the morning commute gets my brain working, and by the time I get to the office, I'm "up".

coffee! if you really need a jolt though, have you had a chocolate flavored coffee?? or, make coffee and throw a spoonful of hot choc mix in the cup and stir it up.....yum! unfortunately, though, the best motivation to create energy to do whatever it is you have to do is the fact that....it'll still be there no matter how long you wait! have a great day girls!! sue

This is too funny. I was just sitting down to blog about my weird burst of energy this morning. As most bursts start, I was fueled up on coffee and nothing else and was aggravated because I couldn't find anything in my pantry. Boom - 30 minutes later I've filled up two paper bags with expired cereal and other stuff and my pantry looks great! I've also done two loads of laundry and stripped the bed.

So to answer your question... Coffee and aggravation get me going!
