We got youngest son a rock polisher/tumbler for his birthday..and we finally got it set up and running tonight. OH MY GOSH!! that thing is loud. Don't know what I expected..it IS rocks in a plastic barrel tumbling for days and days and days and days...but oh my!! I won't be spending lots of time in THIS room. It is right near the computer..so for the next couple weeks if I am only here for short bursts of time..this is why!! I would love to put it out in the laundry room..unfortunatly my laundry/sewing room is added on, and uninsulated and like a fridge this time of year..so that won't work..it has to be over 35 degrees at all times..and under 80..so out there won't work in summer either...so the family room it is. UGH! Maybe by the time he does the refill kit it will warm up enough to have it out there. I am going to be so relieved when this noise stops!! He is so excited to make jewelry and play with the polished stones. HE is quite the little geologist...so it is a good thing. I will keep telling myself that..right?????

Now....that's a mother's love....sacrificing your sanity for your son! :) I'm glad you came up with a solution with the cellar! Very funny!

Oh my - all of us Mom's thought it was a good idea to purchase that noisy thing ...........
I can remember that sound as if it was yesturday. I now think of that as a gift to give your worst enemy. Oh well, the things we do for our kids - remind them of it when they are older and say you never understood them.

You crack me up Jeannie!!
Hey...I moved it to our cellar this morning and I can think again!! It was loud enough to hear in the bedroom last night. I should have taken it down there before I went to bed!! So..this is good. I would have put it in the garage for sure if it weren't so darn cold outside..but the cellar is perfect...cool but not cold and I can't hear that puppy anymore..yay!!

When all the rocks are polished and jewelry made (from the basement!) , you and your son can start a business called Aunt Jenny Rocks. :)

I guess we could call you guys the rock and roll family! ;-) You'll have to show us photos of his creations when they get done.

I remember being so impatient with just an easy bake oven! haha.

You know what...I have a cellar!!!! What am I thinking...it goes downstairs tomorrow!! I am so excited...I am already going nuts with this noise!!
Ronna..luckily my kid will be thrilled if nothing happens at all...he hated to stop looking at the rocks long enough to put them in the tumbler thing!! So..even if they are just a little rounded off he will be thrilled..easy to please type of kid. I hope it does more than that though...it wasn't real cheap!!

Here's an idea- make a wood box out of a dense wood material, line it with cork, and either stick the box over the machine- or put the machine in the box. Maybe that would help deaden the noise?

I wanted one as a kid, and I still do! I'll wait until Tate gets a little older and get him one and pretend like it wasn't really for me!
Ronna Posted - Feb 21 2008 : 8:28:46 PM
Aunt Jenny....you'll be very tired of the noise long before any rocks get "polished", it takes a very long time. Bought one for my son when he was young and never did get anything looking more like a gem than a rock. I see them in thrift shops all the time and smile every time. Nice concept and someone has made a lot of money making them over the years.

My dad and I had one, Jenny--I sure do remember the noise!!! And, also the "wait" for the stones. I remember thinking, "are they done now? How about now?" I made one necklace and my mom still wears it :)

Right---keep telling yourself that. I always wanted a rock tumbler but when I hear one I knew I couldn't. Maybe someday though. I am glad he is excited and happy. MB
