I just read this story
http://www.krem.com/topstories/stories/krem2_022108_dworshakreservoir.14eb2eeb.html

Wow! This is scary because the dam is right above a highway. I am not sure...how do you fix a dam?

I wonder if there are grants or something that would help make getting wind turbines installed more affordable?

I also am really excited about the prospect of maybe building a strawbale home.

I know! I think about that everytime the Palouse winds kick up.

Thanks for the link, Annika! I hope that as soon as we have our own land we can put in solar panels and wind turbines/wind mills. If one of those offsets about 25% of a family's electrical in just 11 mph winds, can you imagine if every family in a windy area put in 4-10 of them? Sure it might be expensive at first with each being about $4,000, but if you were producing more electricity that you use, the power companies actually have to pay YOU!

I'm exploring small scale wind power as a possibility for my own use. I do not see why we are not harnessing all of this free wind power

politics and big business are ruining things for their own short term gains...sorry to be ot, and to rant. I just am frustrated with watching the natural resources and habitats being so ill used.

It's such a catch 22. Build dams and we lose our fish habitat. Don't build dams and there isn't enough water for the increasing population.

It would be great to restore fish habitat. Once the fish are gone, they are gone. And it would be so sad to lose the mighty salmon to dams. I do wonder where they were get the energy that they get fro the hydroelectric power. Perhaps they could install wind turbines at the tops of the mountains instead.

I wish some engineering genius would come up with a way to safely rid our rivers of these dams. In a nutshell, here's why:

"A dramatic collapse of the steelhead population occurred in 1973-5 with only 12,000 fish climbing Ice Harbor dam in 1974. This collapse occurred 2-3 years after the closure of Dworshak dam on the North Fork of the Clearwater River...we are lead to conclude that the collapse was mainly caused by the closure of Dworshak dam, an event that caused the loss of all steelhead spawned in the North Fork of the Clearwater River..."
--from a paper by Alan Berryman, Emeritus Professor of Entomology and Natural Resource Sciences at WSU

"In addition to demonstrating the long-term benefits of dam removal, these removals show that removing dams is not a new untested concept. Dams-even large ones-were being removed a generation ago, and significant benefits resulted. With over 100 dams under consideration for removal across the country-including the four dams on the Lower Snake River-these old and successful dam removals can serve as a model for restoring rivers and migratory fish populations."
