I heard the most wonderful interview with actress Julie Christie on NPR yesterday morning. They were asking her why at the height of her career did she choose to leave Hollywood and move to a remote part of Wales and all but drop off the face of the earth? The interviewer asked her if that was a difficult choice to make.
Ms. Christie responded that it wasn't a difficult decision at all as she has always been a hippie at heart and being an actress, dressing the part of her career etc. was all in direct conflict with who she was...so she left because getting the vegetables in the ground was more important in her world and always had been. How lovely is that?
In closing she said that living in the country, hauling in wood for her fire and doing all those sustainable things on a day to day basis was the culmination of her dreams. Not Hollywood.

Amen to that one Brenda. I work in that industry and there are a precious few REAL people. So always such a breathe of fresh air when someone as elegant and beautiful as Julie Christie comes along and makes such a lovely statement about being a nature girl!

I loved Dr. Zhivago! But then of course Omar Shariff was totally hot too! Never thought about him when we were listing the hottest men on the other thread! Anyway, I admire Julie Christy because she is not afraid to be herself. I think the norm is to see the exact opposite . . . people give up who they are in order to "pretend" to be what they think the world wants them to be. Then we see the sad endings for such women as Marilyn Monroe, Anna Nichole Smith, etc. That is why I always loved Katherine Hepburn. She was always herself, take it or leave it and never put on airs. I wish we had more real people in Hollywood rather than all the unhappy people faking it.

She's a british actress that first made her film debut in Doctor Zhivago. I beleive she's in her late 60's now. Here's a link on her:
