DD went to Hollywood to go to a concert and I STILL can't believe I had actually let her do this. Even though she's almost 18 and she'll be leaving for college later this year, I still feel that I have to keep her close to keep her safe. I guess I have some serious separation issues!

She's been nutso over this German boy band called Tokio Hotel for a few years now and when she found out they were making their American tour debut; she felt she HAD to go. We told her that we simply didn't have the money for such a trip and if she wanted to go she would have to come up with it herself. We didn't really think that she would. Well, she was apparently highly motivated and she shoveled walkways, roof tops, stacked firewood and cleaned houses and came up with the money!

So, then I was feeling like I wanted to back out of our promise and tell her she still couldn't go but, I didn't. I had to force myself to keep my word. It turned out there was someone I could trust from Pocatello who was also going to this same concert with her daughter and was willing to take my dd with her, too. If it hadn't been for that, I just might have told her no anyway; regardless of how hard she worked for this trip.

So, we set up her flights and shuttle bus trips and had everything planned out to a "T" because she would be spending the second night in a hotel and coming back on a plane by herself. Our friend was staying in California longer to visit family. The whole time she was gone I kept thinking "Best laid plans go awry." and was totally on edge the whole time. We had bought her one of those Go phones where you buy the minutes separately for it (cell phones don't work here so there was no point in getting into a contract) and made her call us every step of the way. If it wasn't for the phone calls, I'm sure I would have had a nervous breakdown!

Anyway, she had a great time (other than elevation sickness) and even called me in the middle of the night, when the concert ended, to tell me that she had touched the lead singer! She was so excited and happy about the whole thing.

She made the trip back with a layover in Portland with no problem. I'm so glad she had a good time but, more than anything else, I'm just glad that she's home safe. I'll tell you, sending your last child out into the world is HARD, HARD, HARD!

Actually, Alee, I think I might be coming up this spring with dd, her best friend and her best friend's mom. Haven't worked out the details yet, but will let you know soon. We're thinking spring break.

Yes, I'm soooo glad she's home. I'm also glad I wasn't anywhere near a television on Saturday. Did you gals here about the plane crash at the Portland Airport? DD's layover was in Portland that day. It was just a small private plane but, if I had heard anything about a plane crashing where I knew she was at, I would have been in panic mode. We didn't hear about it until after we got home from the airport. I felt my heart jump just at the mention of a plane crashing at that particular airport even though dd was already safe at home.

I just can't imagine the fear and worry you mothers with kids in the service must go through. DD had considered it for a day when her father simply laid down the law and told her absolutely NOT.

You made it Lisa! So glad your babe is back safe & sound. It IS hard-no matter how old they are! My 17 year old wants to hike The Appalachian Trail this summer. I know I'll worry (and pray) the entire time.

Our oldest toured with his band from the time he was 17 until he was 21. Played over 200 shows a year all over the country. I prayed a lot. He's home at last! Sometimes I still can't believe we let him do it!

You ladies that have children in the armed services...I can't even imagine. And sending girls ANYWHERE alone...I don't think my hubby would make it through that! They will always be our babies won't they?

Lisa,
Yes, I was a bit concerned but he hung around the gate so as long as he did that I was fine. He does have some health issues which I was concerned about but he knows what he needs to do. Everything was fine and he made his flight back no problems. Was I ever glad to see his face when he got home. I didn't know how much I missed him till he was back.

Betty Jo,
I worried with my girls too but they seemed so in control.
When my second daughter was going to fly her first time it was supposed to be on 9/11. Her dad ended up driving her and three other girls and another dad to Texas from NJ. But she flew home after 4 months. She loves flying though which I am not crazy about but will do. I still worry no matter how old they get.

Lisa I felt that way with everyone of my 5. The youngest was the hardest. I sent my 3 boys off to the army and they now take turns being deployed. Every time they come home it gets harder to send them back even though they range from 27-20. Most be know because I am getting older and want them close again. My girls are closer within a couple of hours. Thanks to IMing and web cams I can still keep in touch daily, see their beautiful faces and hear their voices with out it costing me a fortune. Who says it gets easier when they get older. Glad she had a good time and made it home safe.

Oh, Denise. Something like that would make you wonder if he'd get it right on the way back and possibly get stuck somewhere! You know, you think you've done everything and versed your children well on how to get around and be safe, but you just keep wondering if you missed something?

yes indeed. I can feel for you, Lisa.
our youngest took his first flight ever alone to go to school for a month and let me tell you he called someone in this house everyday and when he was taking off and landing. I was so nervous because to start off he got the departure time wrong and missed his first flight. They put him on standby and so he managed to get the next one.
I was sweating it. I'm better now. My grandchildren live near so I spend my time transferring my worrying on them. lol.
