we're home from our fun valentine's day outing! left early .. and had breakfast in bardstown .. stopped by SUGARBUCKETS to get my 'valentine present' .. (kathy has become hank's 'secret shopper' for me! (we didn't have the heart to tell him that when we were in illinois .. i saw a wonderful primitive 'knife sharpener' that i wanted reeeeeeeeeeeel BAD .. and it occured to me to have kathy get it for hank for me!) she wrapped it real pretty .. we stopped by and visited her awhile and i got my gift. (i also got some wonderful, wonderful olde Kentucky books from him .. yep! i got to choose them!) i got him two books that i knew he'd love .. one i actually got for christmas .. but just gave it to him: 1,000 places to visit (in the world) before you die .. and the other is 1,000 places to visit (in the u.s. and canada) before you die!

and i got him a mos' wunnerful very large poster of abraham lincoln (since he was born in a log cabin only ten miles from our log cabin!) .. it's a composite of hundreds of 'civil war' photos .. and when you step back .. they shade into lincoln's face! i had it framed and it's on 'loan' to our olde courthouse for our lincoln reception tomorrow! i'll surprize him with it when we arrive tomorrow night.

then .. we headed up to harrodsburg and visited 'the fort' .. which is the FIRST pioneer settlement in the state of Kentucky! i also wanted to get into the old church that houses the 'cabin' that lincoln's parents were 'supposedly' married in .. and the big Mansion Museum. both were closed ... we were peeking into the church window when a park ranger drove up and told us all was closed today .. we had a nice conversation with him .. and were ready to leave .. when he said .. "oh .. come on .. let me open the church door and show you the cabin" .. i wanted to peek to see if and how it was decorated .. to see if i did the jeremiah abell cabin in our town 'justice' .... I DONE GOOOOOOOD!!

afterwards, we thanked him and were ready to leave .. when he asked: do you want to see the museum too? YESSSSS!!! so he took us over and unlocked that for us and we were in there over an hour with him as he told us all kinds of wonderful facts and showed us each and every room! he told us his name was Lowell and the next time we came to the Fort to look him up! how nice is that!!! (next time we'll treat him to lunch!)

it was afternoon by the time we finished and i needed something to eat. i asked him if he knew the new location for Aunt Gravy's. he said sure i do .. but let me take you there .. it's easier to show you than to describe how to get there (and oh boy! was he ever right!) he told us he didn't think they were open for lunch because they were planning a Valentine Dinner that evening for guests. we arrived . .there were people in there .. but the CLOSED sign was on the door. we thanked him and i told hank i wanted to peek inside. when we walked in .. they told us they were decorating for their dinner that night .. but COME ON IN .. WE'LL FIX LUNCH FOR YOU! gosh! i love kentuckians!!!! we had fun conversations with them as they were putting red and pink decorations all over .. i told them Aunt Gravy's had been the topic of conversation on one of my forums .. and i asked if there really IS or WAS .. an Aunt Gravy. one of the women replied: "I'm Aunt Gravy!" i said: 'chile, i thought you'd be 107 years olde! she laughed and said most people think that too. Said her husband gave her the name. (he confided in me that she just turned 50!) she looks much younger. we just knew we were going to get some goooood southern cookin' .. the family is african american .. jovial and kind. hank got into a long conversation with one of the 'uncles' who had also been a marine. when it was time to head for shakertown, we asked for the check .. Aunt Gravy's husband smiled at us and said ... "no charge .. this is our Valentine Gift for you .. today is about love and we are about God's love .. and this is our gift to you. Happy Valentine's Day." i smiled real big and gave him a big hug! they told us to be sure to stop in next time we came to town. gosh .. this town is about as friendly as Greensburg!!

Then we ambled back up to Fort Harrod .. (Lowell told us the cabins were open for viewing). We had it all to ourselves .. we walked from cabin to cabin .. i took note of how each was decorated .. when i saw something i'd like to add to our town cabin .. hank made a note of it for me. the weather had warmed up and it was comfy walking around (the morning started out COLD!) .. we also took a stroll through the first GRAVEYARD in Kentucky (adjacent to the Fort) .. saw where the very first white child was buried among other very old graves. Very reverent and holy.

then .. on to shakertown where we got there in time to walk around a little bit .. then had a very delicious romantic dinner (roast beef about 3 inches thick .. melt in your mouth .. with shrimp .. and all the fixin's! i even had a couple bits of 'chess pie'!!

we're home sweet home now .. and just glowing from such a wonderful kentucky day .. i'm gonna' hit the bed now .. cuz' the farmgirls will be knockin' on my door in about a dozen hours from now.

hope you all had a lovely valentine's day too! xo, frannie
