Reading about the Keepsake Canvas in Rebekah's blog reminded me of something we used to do when our kids were growing up. We had a plain white tablecloth that we used at all special family dinners (birthdays, holidays, celebrations etc.) and after dinner, I would pass around a sharpee and everyone would add a message to the tablecloth. It's really special to me now as a lot of the people who signed it have passed away - my dad, my uncle, an aunt. It's also fun to see what messages my kids left for each other when they were young. If you try it, make sure you get a PERMANENT pen because it will take a lot of washings.

We do sort of the same thing at Christmas but with a tablecloth that every one signs (people leave messages sometimes or draw little things too) with a ballpoint pen and then I embroider all the names from each year in a different color..the key is along the edge. My dad and my father in law and others who have passed away now are on it. I started it the year STeve and I were engaged so it has our whole marriage on it..all the kids and relatives and everyone ever at our home on Christmas. It is one of my favorite things.

Debra - you can do it just with your immediate family too - it won't seem like much now, but in 10-15 years, it will be one of your most treasured possessions. It will be a sample of each kid's handwriting and sentiments as they grow up. Make sure you date each entry. When kids get to that certain age, they won't want to write anything, but if you can at least get them to sign it, it will mean so much to you when they're gone from home.
