Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 3:11:40 PM Me- I am obsessed with the beach and ocean. Since I was 11 years old and spent every waking moment of my summer vacation basking at the beach, I have been hooked. I would get actual stomach pains when summertime was over. I would wear my flip flops until my Mama said I HAD to put on winter shoes. I even bought coconut smelling lotions and shampoo and I religiously applied my lip balms (Still do to this day). I even have hair products now that are "surf hair" related. I love the smell of the ocean, the sand and shells, I love to frequent the tacky but fun shops by the sea, I could watch trollers come in and out all day, I love being tanned (yes, I know, but I only get to live once), I love shorts and tanks tops and flip flops and that is what I live in 90% of the time. I hate the cold weather. I once spent an entire summer wearing a bathing suit everday. I worked at night just so I could stay at the beach all day. One of my night jobs was working in at the Cabana Hut during the summer, I was a hostess and got to wear cute little sundresses. I love lobster, chowder and shrimp and could eat them everyday along with grilled pineapple and strawberries by the pound. Tropical colors are all around my home. I love fruit and the more exotic, the more fun for me. I went to Guam when I was in the Navy and thought I had found paradise. It was hot, humid and the water was warm but a the most beautiful blue I had ever seen. I sat on the beach for 12 hours, 3 days straight and was never happier. When I was 12, I went to a yardsale and bought a HUGE poster of the beach and had that on my wall for the next 9 years. I think even joining the Navy had something to do with my love of the beach. I own a beach comber bike in turquoise blue and all of my clothes are what I would consider beach friendly- easy to wash and wear cotton along with many bathing suits (I own 4 right now and probably with buy a few more before the hot weather is over). When I first lived on my own, I bought a lounge chair and I had patio furniture as my table. I had an old dresser I painted beachy pink and I hot glued shells to a mirror. I used colorful beach towels as my curtains and I even to this day, I still have the tacky bar lights (lobsters, flamingos, palm trees, etc) all over my house. My bathroom is decorated with tropical flowers and surfboard shower curtain hooks. I wear sundresses constantly during the hotter weather to anything we attend. I actually had a chance to work on a boat (something down in the Carribean) but I chickened out. We eat off of beachy dinnerware and I like to use the mohito glasses to drink out of. I also use my Margarita glasses. I dressed Charlie in surfer shorts just in case we stopped by the beach and I always keep lotion, suntan lotion, towels, water bottles, toys, etc..in my Jeep..just in case...
Hubby and I are talking about moving to Corpus Christi just because of our love of the beach. We figure we are still young and want to do it now and raise Charlie there rather than wait until we get older. We both have had people in our lives who "waited" and never made it to their paradise.
I am truly obsessed.
What is your obsession?
Cheers, Heather

Posted - Feb 13 2008 : 12:41:18 PM yarn and textiles. Not necessarily for doing anything with them other than looking at them, touching them, loving the depth of color or texture, whatever. I sortof "horde" linens, wools, etc....I always made fun of my mother for her obsession with clothing, never taking the tags off or saying, "oh, that's too good to wear just anywhere" and now, I do the same obsessing over my fabric, yarn, etc...stash. Oh, that's too good to use for this hat, scarf, whatever!!!

Posted - Feb 13 2008 : 12:34:10 PM Farms. Even when I was little I was going to be farmer when I grew up. All my pictures I drew were barns and farm animals. I collect paintings of red barns now...I don't have alot..but always look for them...and love anything farmy that isn't also cartoony. My favorite, most relaxing drives have always been just driving and checking out farms.

Posted - Feb 13 2008 : 12:19:50 PM Heather - Just for today, I became obsessed with your obsession! :D Your descriptions are so vivid and sunny - just what I needed on this bitterly cold, miserably icy day here in KY. I just keep picturing a beach and sun and tans(I like myself better with a tan, too) and flip flops and shells(every buy 'weird shell art'aka souvenirs - I can't resist those kitschy things in thrift stores - I have a shell frog with big eyes, a shell owl, the list goes on-LOL). Your obsession brightened my day. Thanks, I needed that! :D

Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 6:10:28 PM I've always been obsessed with horses. When I was a kid I would gallop around the yard on my pretend Thoroughbred, Thunderhead. When I got older, I read every book I could get my hands on about horses. I have 4 minis now and hope to get a full-sized horse in a few years. |

Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 4:16:52 PM Thanks Lisa for the words of encouragement. Like I said, we have seem so many people literally work themselves to death or save every penny and be miserable and then pass away, never having enjoyed a single ounce of life. When I worked at the Cabana Hut, the Assistant Manager was a women in her 40's with 2 kids, divorced. She loved her job and loved her life and she was more obsessed about the beach than I was. A few years ago, I went back to visit and learned she finally made the leap and moved to North Carolina on the beach. She became the manager at one of the restaraunts down there. She sent me pictures of her "house", which was basically a small shell (get it, shell!!) of a house she renovated. She was so happy about her life and she taught me a lot.
I do have this little obsession with making and selling beach inspired "aprons" during the tourist season. I could just set up a little stand on the beach. When I went to Corpus to summers ago, I fell in love. It does get touristy, but not like you would think. Real laid back and the lifestyle is like that 24/7.
When I was 22, I had a beach party- I received a hibachi for a gift and some stuff from the "LIFE IS GOOD" company. I had an authentic clambake on beach, it was awesome!!!!
Thanks for the inspiration.
Cheers, Heather

Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 4:08:48 PM The Welsh Corgi... I look at pictures, read blogs and watch You Tube Corgi stuff. My family says I torture myself by looking at petfinder to see all the dogs that need rescued. Goofy yes, but I am always so happy when one finds a home. I'd have half a dozen if hubby would agree!

Posted - Feb 12 2008 : 4:01:52 PM I WAS obsessed with the mountains. When I was little I would draw pictures of horses and mountains and Grandma always put them up on the fridge. I told her all the time that I belonged there. I watched any and every movie that took place in or was filmed in the mountains and actually felt homesick watching them even though I had never been there or even seen them in person until I was 26. I did the same thing with books that took place in the mountains. I would pour over maps of mountainous states and try to imagine being there.
When we finally moved out here when I was 32, I was in heaven...almost. We moved to Salt Lake which was in the mountain west but still not quite "IT" for me. I wanted to escape the city every day and managed to do just that almost every weekend. We finally moved up here in '99 and this was it for me. I no longer obsess over the mountains because I'm smack in the middle of them without big city yuck.
Now, my obsession is gardening!
Heather, you and your honey follow your dream. We did and couldn't be more content:)
