KYgurlsrbest	Posted - Feb 06 2008 : 06:12:58 AM Well, I think it was probably a hard time financially just before the war, and there are places that I've had a bad time for whatever reason that I just don't want to go back to, either. It was always odd though, growing up and wondering, if all our "people" are there, why don't you want to go back?" The last time I was there, it was for an Auntie's funeral. They actually stopped the clocks and put black fabric over the mirrors...so her spirit wouldn't come back through (???!!!)...she was laid out in her very victorian parlor. I loved how superstitious they were about it! Yes, N.O has wonderful food...and I could live on it--happily, he took his love of that food and learned to cook it in Kentucky. I'm so glad to know more about the city, Linda, but also sad to hear about the decline--though, I would imagine that it will be many years before they "get back"....totally devastating. Linda Houston	Posted - Feb 06 2008 : 03:27:50 AM Jonni, I am so sorry about your Father. The sad part is that NO is known for it food. What a sad experience for him. I do not go to NO as often as One would think. We tend to go to Houston, Texas for medical things, entertainment and business. NO is a lovely city, however the crime rate is on an incline. I just heard on the new that 7 or 9 persons were shot at the parades. Bad for the re-building of the city after the storm 2 years ago, Thank you responding. Linda

I appreciate the information about the crews and society balls, etc...My father was a jockey and ended up with a broken back in NO before WWII...he said he almost died of starvation, and blamed NO--he rarely went back! I know of Lent only from my Irish Catholic husband but he hasn't practiced as long as we've been married...he has his "altar boy" ducks in a row though, and can tell me any information I'd EVER need in the lent department. As I said before, the original krews ( I spelled it wrong)were made up of the wealthest of the People in NO, Biloxy, Miss and some other southern cities. Even today, the Krews are by invitation only. There are different requirements for each Krew, howerver, One has to have the resourses to buy the costumes. favors, and attend numerous balls. I can't spell the french names but some of the krews are called, krew of the Heart,krew of the wonderful extras in life, krew of illusions.....krew of the family---it goers on ands on. Also, the Krews haver socials all year, sime do charity work. The Second line in Lake Charles go the Nursing homes, different funcitons, hospitals and just about anywhere they are asked. There is information on the net, history anything one would want to know. Goggle and see what you find and I am willing to answer any questions. Again, thanks for your interest.

Linda Houston	Posted - Feb 05 2008 : 3:20:40 PM I hang my head in shame not knowing the history of the king cake. My family is on the way downtown, as you read this, to watch the Crew of Crew parade. That is the last parade of the entire season. It is Big, beautiful and fun. Lake Charles has grown bigger and bigger each year around this wonderful holiday. We have 42 Crews, lots of fun and lots of pagentry. There is indeed a wonderful history to this holiday, primarily it is a Catholic celebration because tommorrow is Ash Wednesday...the beginning of lent. Therefore, no drinking, and revelry---1 good meal and 2 small meal---no fish on Friday for 6 weeks. The date of the season is counted back 6 weeks from Easter. Each year we had a different date. It begins on 12TH night with a Gala---This is a public event with all 42 crews queen and kings prommating to show the public the beautiful gowns. Then the balls begin and last night , before fat Tuesday was another Gala (public) and the current queens and kings and courts prommade for the public. I have not been to NO to see the parades, but it is the biggest and best....My husband was in medical school there and went every year (we were not married) He prefers the samller celebrations and today we usuallt just baby sit for grand kids. The balls orginally was for the very wealthy and onluy opendd to people in "high" society. Some of the Cres today require lots of financial baking to do all that one has to do to be part of the crew or royalty. There are also crews that are working, middle class people, but originally in NO, the ones known were for the wealthy. This is the information I know around the season, if some is incorrect, please don't take offense. I am not Catholic, but lots of my family are and I have heard the history passed down. I also attend balls at the invitation of friends each year. I do not belong to a crew. I wished I would have joined when we were younger--Who knows if it comes my way again I might think of all of you and do it for all of us !! Thank you for this topic. We take for granted the wonderful culture that we each herald from. I have lived in several states and huge cities, but when it was time to "hang up my hat", I came back to my home, Louisiana. Agreed. King cakes should be made with RINGS, not KINGS. Then last night she talked about another. I went "how many are there?" Ohhh there are TONS down there. People go all out. I really love the chocolate pralines from down there. It looked like a braided bread with sugar frosting on it - green, purple, and yellow. He said whoever finds the baby (its supposed to represent Baby Jesus) has to buy the cake next year.
