I'm asking this because my DH has severe IBS, It's getting worse and somedays he can't leave the house, We have to go to a specailist at OSU in May (soonest that he could get in) and he has a HidAScan coming up..Anywhoo.... I mostly take care of Hoss now and have plans to plant a garden but first come spring we have to till it.

Wow, I lost my train of thought, I guess what I'm looking for is some words of encouragemnet, We had plans of doing everything around here together but he gets tired so easily and we have steep hills in the back that lately he can't make it up. He wasn't this bad when we bought the house.

MMM...I have a fear of the unknown today.

You want to know how strong _WOMEN_ can be on a farm? Here's what my summer was like two summers ago.

I was working on a horse ranch with Nancy (The owner), Bryony (the manager) and myself. We had almost 30 horses on the place, all but 3 in stalls, plus 4 cows, about 12 goats, and chickens. We hired in the farrier and we also do all of our own breeding work with two stallions on the place. So on collecting days we would have the farrier on the place and he would be the only human male!

Bryony and I bucked hay bales, filled both barns with hay, mucked the stalls and worked the horses. Nancy handled the office work. Nancy's husband was away on business and could only come home once a month and their son also had a summer engagement that kept him out of town.

It was a lot of work but it was also really great because we gloried in the fact that three women were running this horse ranch and we only occasionally hired in some male labor! :D

Thank You for pointing out that I can be strong and do these things by myself because my Farmgirl Friends are doing it to! We do have a 4-wheeler but I do need more practice with it, I gave it to much gas in the fall and went over backwards on it, it did show me that the thing wont fall down on me cuse the rack in back stopped it, I just laughed laying on my back

Today I just got scared thinking about all of the what-ifs...DH is going thru so much testing and is sick to his stomach all the time, We are trying to find out what the trigger foods are.

I end up doing most stuff around here and count on my husband as backup help. As the kids get older they are alot of help to me. My grown boys were help when they were home too, but I had a few years in there without much help from the kids. My 13 year old daughter is a wonderful help. I do count on husband for heavy lifting, tilling (our tiller is too much for me to handle and I am a big sturdy gal) and hay bucking and stuff like that. He is a wonderful backup milker too..although Mona makes it real clear she likes me best. (she gives less milk and is less patient with him)
I was wondering what IBS is too.

I just got to thinking of all the stuff I still do and fencing is one of them. If you have animals you will always have fencing. A big job but I have gotten pretty good at it. But the barn needs painting and I don't want to do that. I would have murals painted on it. MB
PS. I have a JD Gator and that is good for hauling hay, buckets, tools, anything around and sitting in it too. Might be good for your husband. MB

I have always taken care of the animals and gardening but Dave always did the mowing and any maintainence and now THAT will be my job too. I know I need help---but then again---I think I will just do the best I can (and my son-in-law too). The little engine that could--that's me. Chug Chug or for me it will be Puff Puff--I better go lay down now. MB

Heather, just do what you can and prioritize. If you don't get to the things at the bottom of the list it shouldn't be too bad. What is IBS, anyway? I'm just wondering if it might be something that a change in diet might help.

When I stay at our place in the summer, I do it all when it comes to gardening and day to day stuff (hauling water, chopping wood, etc.) but when it comes to home maintenance or building, it has to wait until dh is there. I'm NO GOOD at any of that.

Do you have a 4 wheeler or a mule? That might help and if you buy it for farm use it is a tax deduction!
