So I went to roll over when the phone rang at 7am. Are you working? No, can you come in today for 3rd grade. uhhhhh sure. BLAH It was the most damp dreary day and I wanted sleep cause I was up till the wee hours for homework but whatever so I did. It's Catholic Schools week and they had a volleyball tournament. It was fairly fun. I really think I am through with wanting to teach in a school setting. I love teaching and kids but being told you can and can't do this is on my last nerve. I teach appropriately but worrying will a kids parent or putting up with attitude. Dont have that in private lessons.

Right Sue, but that hardly ever happens. So many go home to empty homes or to grandparents (thats not bad but they pawn their kids off like you said) and when they are ill they sit in school waiting to go home the whole DARN day! Substitute darn for a better word. It's sad. They can be so sick but the parent won't leave work because of the precious $. I do wish parents had to take parenting classes or something. You have to learn to drive and pass a test. I don't know I just feel bad for the children. If they are not taught and we can't teach them in schools then it's fairly innocent bad behavior (innocent as in benefit of the doubt) More people need to take care of lil johnny and realize you have only the children god blessed you with take care of them for darn sake. One lil girl that took a liking to me in 3rd grade yesterday I know who her mama is, a stripper. A nice one but the home setting.... is less than desirable. Her sister in first grade was listening to a song and I APOLOGIZE if I offend you but imagine this that they were listening to shaking their lil butts to (which I saw and cringed and was like oh my gosh dear lord help us) the word pussy (not a cat) came on and finally a teacher turned it off. I was passing through and heard no words like that so I continued on my mission for the morning. 1st grade!!! Say a hail mary please! I see some of the lil girls and I think oh man when they get a tad older....trouble and maybe a lil trouble to go with them. I think as teachers we try our darndest to help and influence kids in a positive way but like we've discussed in other posts theres tv music people and even home life that seem to counteract it all. Can you gals all come teach with me? :-P I could use your good minds and hearts. Puhhhhlease!

well, although depressing, i enjoyed reading all you had to write about teaching...the school systems, kid/parents, etc. because i agree with it! i actually went back to school to get a degree in teaching and was almost finished and decided to forget it! frankly, i think as soon as a kid is a problem they should suspend him/her. let those arrogant, demanding parents get stuck staying home with "little johnny" for a week and see how much they'd like to tell the teachers their job and "back up" little johnny the next time. so many parents pawn off their kids so much of the time and then due to guilt, feel they have to defend these little brats to the end of the earth. they aren't doing them any good.

Aw Julia!!! Thank you !!! I know and I have to realize that the good outweighs the bad but just like with the news the bad sticks and weasels its way into my sight and thoughts. You nailed it the worry and fear. I already struggle with anxiety literally and the worry that comes with well will I hear about this etc. I know alot of the kids backgrounds and many have it rough and tough even though we are a $ town and a private school, the richest lil girl there has divorced parents and a nutty father and mother. The father is a dr. and actually had a case of abuse to his children brought out in public. My heart ached for the family. I mean $ has nothing to do with rough and tough sometimes. You can have alot and still have issues!! sometimes more. I keep thanking god that I live well but I am not rich (me I'm poverty line if I lived on my own) but I am not struggling and poor. I actually had a kid sexually harassing me for awhile. I called the parent and luckily shes sweet as pie and nailed it immediately. What if the parent blamed me? I mean alot goes into the thoughts. If you are a teacher and accused you are guilty. My mum always taught me that in the teaching world there is no innocent until proven guilty you are already judged. Thank you guys it really reminds me why I got into teaching in the first place. I could go on and on about stories. Thank youuuuuu

Bridget, thank you so much for your honesty! I can not imagine being a teacher in our society right now. Everyone is on edge..fear of being sued, fear of guns, fear of drugs, fear of sexual promiscuity, fear of parents and their lack of involvement or over-involvement, fear of not meeting national standards.. its goes on and on and on!
Let me say, that my 6 year old and 4 year old attend a little school in Medical Lake Wa. The school itself is run down and kind of shabby looking, but the people inside; teachers, principal, secretarial staff, nurse, lunch ladies, custodians are absolutely beautiful and amazing in every single way! The outpouring of these people, (some of whom like many of you, are familiar faces but complete strangers), has been beyond my comprehension in my families time of despair and worry. I can not agree with Miss Wilma more ought to spend some time in their child's classroom to see and understand what goes on there. I have nothing but admiration for these people. There are so many issues wrapped up in all of this. Parents who need support parenting. People who have a general apathy that keeps them subsisting but not really living. Children who are influenced by other people who are made to seem real but are pure fiction. It goes on and on. My heart aches for you and your frustration. If it helps, there are people out there who recognize your commitment, your dedication and talents and I, for one, have nothing but respect and admiration!
Much love and support, ~julia hayes

LOL Peanut. I honestly think you can't win public or private. I'm music and my mum is. I'd take private over public for the arts but it still stinks lol. Yeah you have it right. Hardly any discipline and now it got outta hand the principle is putting saturday detention into affect.

Oh Bridget... I hated private school more than public school. Every time the kids did something the administrators would call me in their offices and say, "Now, Jennifer. Maybe you didn't see what you think you saw." or "I'm sure Little Johnny didn't MEAN to do it."

Because if any child was disciplined then Mommy or Daddy was coming to school to ream out the teachers and scream about how they weren't paying $5,000 a year for their kids to be treated "like that".

Grrr. Four years later and I'm still bitter.

Thanks Miss Wilma you are so right. What wears me out is parents and the kids with no respect for anything but themself. Thanks Heather!!! Yeah everyone says oh you get holidays weekends and summers off.....um you'd be insane to not have that. You cannot discipline at all. It's bad. It's like the kids don't even wanna learn. If only we shipped in kids like in Iraq (watched a show on them and how they wanted more than anything to go back to school but had to collect scrap) and let them go in place of the brats (I mean that lightly) that don't realize what they have. It's just wearing me down and too fast so I think I might opt out. I love privately teaching. They are there to learn and the parents care most of the time and you get paid :-p less stress. I really really wish everyone had to teach or observe what happens. People would realize you're paid very little esp in private schools (I make $75 for working 8:30-almost 4pm and you prepare outside the classroom) not alot folks. I just wish more Americans realized how precious teachers are like over in the Asian countries they are held up like athletes. Ok off my soapbox. THANKS for those of you that realize and have a clue :):):):) Makes it a refreshing change xoxox

Yes I think teachers are the best!! I always have respect for those who teach and really put their heart into it!! A big Thanks!!! to all who teach.

My uncle keeps telling me I should go into teaching because I get the summers off and all the holidays and what some other things he thinks are perks (and no, he has never taught a day in his life). Yeah- that and dealing with being a surrogate parent to 30-40 kids who are disrespectful and you can't do a darn thing about it without getting into trouble...I praise anyone who does it.

Cheers,
Heather

Girls I worked in the school system for awhile and I want to say every parent should have to spend one week in the class room, I saw teachers kicked ,slapped, and totally no respect for them, I saw teachers way over worked not only at school but long after they went home, also I saw how many hours they spent after school working to make things better for the students, and the abuse they took from parents, Correcting children begins at home, I just want you to know there is one lady out here that is thankful for you teachers

I know many teachers who have taken jobs with education-related companies. For instance, companies that provide testing materials, tutoring services or disciplinary programs. Usually these jobs involve training teachers on using their programs.

I love subbing at the elementary level, (I was in second grade for part of today) but I don't think I would enjoy a full time job teaching. Well..maybe Kindergarten..I just love the littest kids. I did child care for years and will likely do that again someday. It fits with our family pretty well. Good luck!

I know what you mean, but be careful! Six years ago I was assaulted in the classroom and quit shortly thereafter. After that, I didn't want to teach anymore. Now I have a very expensive but completely useless degree. Unfortunately, a degree in education doesn't transfer very well into other fields. I have a bachelor's degree but the only job I was able to find was administrative assistant - and you start at the bottom rung. The hours are awful and the pay is lousy. I might as well not even have a degree. I know leaving teaching is tempting, but it is hard to find another job!
Now, I'd like to go back to teaching, but my certificate has expired. It's going to take more college classes to have my provisional renewed, plus I can't imagine how I will answer the inevitable interview question, "So, why did you leave your last position?"

My daughter went back and got her masters just so she could teach high school Spanish and she taught two years and she's finished. She doesn't like being a public school teacher at all. She worked as a migrant student liason before and loved it, but didn't make enough money to live on. She had to work 3 jobs to survive. What a waste - I don't know what she's going to do with that degree now - it's pretty specific.
