one's self as she is? What age did you hit that? I seem to, especially over this past year, really let go of a lot of physical expectations of myself, in reference to weight, hair, clothing and things like that- those things women seem to get so hung up on. I am only 33 but finally feel like I am or have stepped over that line (maturity????) of worrying about what others think of me in terms of outward appearance. I am more worried about am I a good person, how did I help someone today, am I setting the example for my son and even for those around me, am I doing the best job I can??? etc....

I got to thinking about this as I was cleaning out my make-up bag. I never have worn a lot of makeup and prefer a freshly scrubbed face to anything, but I at work, I wear just some mascara, a little concealer or enhancer as I like to call it and some light lip gloss. I cut all my hair off awhile ago and it has grown in with all it's whites and mix of grey and browns. I just hi-lite little to brighten it up, but that is all. I was tumbling under the "pressure" ie:society, magazines, tv, etc...to grow it out long again but now love it short. It makes me sassy!! I have gotten more compliments on my short, short hair than I ever did when I spent literally hours on my long hair.

Clothing- really have always been a basic girl but spent too much time trying to fit into an un-attainable size. Comfort and ease is the name of the game now, with a pop of color and fit being important.

I was looking around the office today and realized, who I am competing with? IT is MYSELF!! DING DING DING DING DING!!! Duh!! I was holding onto some long ago taught ideas of how I was suppose to be and I realized, I needed to decide for myself if that is really how I want things to be with me.

I also was looking at some women who I know are a few years older than me and frankly, they are really fighting aging, as in they hate it and I think they are trying too hard to look young. I really see their true beauty and wish they could too. I am not trying to come off mean or better here, I just wish we could stop being so concerned with being young and unrealistic ideas.

I think I crossed "that" threshhold- whatever it is named and boy, the pressure I lost is great!!!! And the time I save not worrying and living life is great.

Cheers,
Heather

oh ya-ya's .. this is a wonderful world because of such 'centered' and 'balanced' women as we!

for the 'joan rivers'es' of the world .. we just have to also accept them for who they are and their own personal choices .. we are all on a 'journey' .. and have things to learn and things to teach.

one of the most personally 'freeing' statements i ever heard .. and that has been a HUGE part of my life and understanding, acceptance (and peace) was by Shakespeare:

"All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts." William Shakespeare

Yes- that is what I met, as Tammy described, as women who are so afraid of aging, they have so many procedures done and where such unflattering clothes, it ages them in some way. Being funky, fun, dressing up or down, whatever floats your boat.....embrace who you are!!!!

Frannie- can I copy your pic and hang it up on my inspirational wall???

Cheers,
Heather

Frannie - I understand ya girlfriend. You don't need to overdo it, though to look young. I'm talking about women like Joan Rivers who go under the knife so many times that they look artificial. Or wear clothes that DO NOT flatter them at all. I admit - I like to dress up when I go out with my hubby, but at home I am just me. I like jeans and t-shirts. I really don't have the body for any clingy clothes like some skinny minny's ( you know who you are Miss Frannie..LOL). I'm a chubby chick. lol. Nut we all like what we like and that's ok with me. Whatever makes us happy..right? :)

That's my Frannie!! You go girl! I am 59 and I feel the same way you do. I can honestly say I feel better now than I did in my 30"s! Age is an attitude. You can be old in your 20's and young at 90. Truthfully I find aging is so liberating. I know who I am and what I want and the things that are really important to me. Humor is a big contributor to keeping young. So are grandkids, they make you feel like a kid again. Just be happy, love yourself and take the best care of your best friend ---YOU ! Have fun, see the real true joys of life and enjoy whatever makes your heart sing! I have never been quiet at anything, so I am sure not going to to quietly into the night!!

Hold still Frannie, so I can give you a hug! I love your fresh spirit and your self acceptance. And I love how you advocate that we each be true to ourselves. I really got the impression in Heather's first post that she has finally gotten to that place of self acceptance, that the outside prompts to do or be a certain way no longer are stronger than those inside her. To you Heather, I say congratulations! You're about to enter the most rewarding chapters of your life!

Me, I'm 53 years old. I'm about ten pounds more than I should weigh, but I'm strong and I do exercise every day. I spend a lot at a hair salon and enjoy it, but I only wear makeup in the winter (and rare summer occasions) because as I work horses I simply sweat too much. My clothes are utilitarian or technical gear for the most part-- CoolMax, polarfleece, down, leather. I don't do my nails because I don't want them too prissy to scratch a horse's neck, pet a dog, clean a sheath, stick in a horse's mouth, etc. Breeches or jeans, makeup or not, I dress to please myself, make me comfortable and make it easier to do my work.

What works for me won't work for the next person; we're all individuals, and we're all different! If every flower in the field was the same, the beauty of the individual would be lost. We need to celebrate the beauty of each individual, and be true to ourselves.

Frannie, you are the coolest person, rock on gurl!. I'm being myself too and have a funky look and style. Age does not mean giving up being who you are in fact I've found it easier as I get older to not give a bean what others think so
long as I'm happy with me.
Be who you are!

miz sheila .. i can claim quite a few things on your list too! and i've PAID to have WHITE hair (well .. "ho yaller" .. platinum blonde .. anyway!) my hairdresser sez i don't have any grey .. and only she sees my roots! but my daddy was in his late 80's before he got a few strands. i have two gurlfrenz who had silver hair in their 30's .. sooo .. it comes sooner rather than later to some .. they don't have to wait for it. one left it silver .. the other dyed hers back to dark .. both are happy with their choices. i have some extra poundage on my short bod too .. and that is o.k. with me (howsomeever .. i'd love to lose a few and mostly jus' 'tighten' up!) Mr. Aruthur Itis makes me take a little more time in the 'bouncing up and down' department too these days. I NEVER exercise! (i should for heart-healthiness .. i know i know!) I, too, try to stay on a good diabetic diet .. i'm hoping my new 'pump' will help me out there too. I have good skin .. i think i owe that to not being a sun-worshipper EVER (well, maybe we burnt to a crisp at the beach as children!) and oh yes, dear one .. when we are DOWN .. that's a great place to talk to our higher being! There are always so many people in this world that are so much worse off than we are .. lordy! all we have to do is open a magazine or turn on the nightly news.

I do wish you didn't 'feel' old though .. fifty is still sooooooooooooo YOUNG! with luck .. you're only about 'half-way-through' ... i'm gonna' try and wait until i'm rockin' in the rocker or sittin' in the wheel chair and dribblin' oatmeal outta' the side of my mouth to 'feel old'. hugs, frannie

Well, I am in my 50's and I feel quite a bit older
I have so many health coditons and diseases
I feel so old
I have never colored my hair.
I have had women come and ask me what hair color I use
They can't believe it when I say it is my own natural color and that I am in my 50's.
I always ask God to let me have silver hair when I get old and I'd never colored it.
I have just a few silver streaks in it
Son use to ask me if I was going to dye my hair when I got old
I told him no,; cause I desvered every strand of silver I had Yep.
I am overweight, short,
I have a time with my knees getting up and down
I have excerise for years
I do strengthening execerises and trying to stay on a Diabetic dite
My skin is creamy peachy pink color there again I have had women of different ages come and commened on how nice my skin looked
I never get in the sun,
I have conditons where I cannot be in the sun or hot weather.
and now cold is getting to me
It is diffcult to have these many things wrong with one
I always count my blessing though
If I am down and complaing to God, He always shows me someone worse off than I am.

FRANNIE ... 66 YEARS OLD ..
funky hair .. funky clothes .. funky boots and socks ..
YOUNG-AT-HEART-ATTITUDE!
HAPPY! HAPPY! HAPPY!

oh gurlz .. (frannie-ism here!) you are both still 'chilluns' .. shoooooooot! i'm olde as you two put together .. and my philosophy is ALWAYS ... at any age ... love WHO YOU ARE! but do not .. NO! DO NOT! ever use 'another year passed' to 'let yourself go'!! whatever your age .. 20's right up into the 90's and beyond .. again .. LOVE who you are .. IF you adore playing with makeup and pretty clothes .. NEVER give it up if you don't WANT to! if you begin to 'prefer' a less 'made up' look .. well, that's o.k. too! sometimes some make-up and clothes that make us 'feel good' really does IMPROVE both the LOOKS and DEMEANOR of a person.

Maybe it is sometimes perceived as 'fighting aging' by others .. but .. if that is what makes you happy and 'young at heart' .. DO NOT GO QUIETLY INTO THE NIGHT with no lipstick and eyeliner .. just because you are 'another year older'. Think of some of the older women that you know that get all 'gussied up' .. and smile, and smile and smile .. partially because of it! OH .. and BE A GOOD PERSON TOO .. whether you prefer plain or fancy!

I have a sister-in-law .. who let her hair go totally GREY .. and she allowed herself to become 'frumpy' (by her OWN description) .. she started trying to hide a few pounds with 'sweat clothes' ALMOST ALL OF THE TIME. She stopped SMILING!! When i saw her over the holidays .. SHE LOOKED FABULOUS!!! (NOT EVERYONE HAS TO DO THIS .. BUT IT WAS IMPORTANT "to her" TO HELP RAISE HER SELF-ESTEEM BACK UP (she felt) ... (the operative word there is "help" .. looks ALONE do not do it!) Her hair is a BEAUTIFUL auburn shade (much like what WAS her natural color) .. she wears pretty clothes now .. and looks FABULOUS .. by ANY standard! She smiles and says she feels pretty. No true friend (or loved one) will stop loving you if you are pretty or plain.

GURLZ .. i am 66 years old and am often told i look to be in my 40's ... O.K.!!!!!!! LATE 40'S!!! AND I OWE MUCH OF IT TO (1) good 'genes' (2) healthy lifestyle (3) my fun, funky clothes, (4) and this is a BIGGIE!!!! ATTITUDE!!! and (5) Maybelline and Max Factor!

I can't even imagine looking OLD!!! (oldER .. yes .. but OLD .. NEVER!) not in MY eyes and not in the eyes of my beloved! And i think most of all .. this is because i choose to not FEEL old. And I seldom 'act my age' .. and am very happy for it!!! Gurlz .. we're gonna' all be 'gone' soon enough .. why not 'USE THE CRYSTAL AND GOOD LINENS EVERY DAY'!!! (my beautiful cousin taught me that saying when i was in my early 20's .. Cousin Margaret looked GORGEOUS right up to the day of her death in her 70's) .. she took good care of herself .. she wore pretty clothes and took care of her hair and make-up.)

Have you ever seen those 'make-over' shows? Well, i've never seen a BEFORE that looked better than an AFTER .. no matter what age.

Remember .. if you PREFER less make-up and not wearing what is considered 'stylish' clothes .. and are happy .. that is ALL that matters (as long as you are genuinely happy with yourself .. and a genuinely NICE person). But, oh lordy .. let us 'older ladies' hang on with our newly 'whitened teeth' .. cling by our highly-polished fingernails .. and our silly spikey shoes .. IF that is truly what makes US happy.

I truly, truly do not 'judge' a woman by her 'au naturale' look or her SPA and BEAUTY SHOP look .. i do not feel sorry for either type .. as long as how they choose to look is what makes them genuinely happy. If i see a woman in her 80's or 90's and she's got flamin' red hair with rouged pink cheeks and MAX FACTOR RED lips .. a wildy outlandish hat and her 'sunday-go-to-meetin' clothes .. if that woman has a SMILE on that face .. she looks FOREVER YOUNG to me and brings an endearing smile to my face too.

o.k. .. offa' my 'soap box'.

Hey Heather,

I understand where you are coming from. I think it really hit me once I turned 30. While I always keep my self clean, I don't fuss so much about the make-up. (I have a huge case of unopened make-up that I received as a Christmas present 2 years ago! lol) I am a jeans and t-shirt type of gal and that will never change. I try to look presentable when I go to school functions and out with my family, but at home I am comfortable. My kids always try to make me into something they saw on t.v, but that isn't me. I don't keep up on the latest fashions or get my nails done. I am, however, trying to watch my weight for health reasons though. I figure that my family and friends love me the way that I am and the only one who really worried about those things were me in the first place. I feel better now that I stopped. I kinda feel for some women who go to extremes to stay young. I am going to age gracefully and let me gray hairs shine!! lol

What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger!
