HONEY HUNK and i are trying to decide on a 'warm weather vacation' to take late February/March. On the list so far is MEXICO (i want to see Aztec Ruins .. a cruise down the Panama Canal with stops in Belize, etc. OR .. and actually my personal favorite: just hopping in our car and heading SOUTH .. in the good 'ole U.S. of A!

anyone have some great fun places to visit in FLORIDA? (remember .. i'm not a BIG BEACH fan! .. although Hank would enjoy that for a few days!) i'd like to see some 'historic' sites .. take an 'everglades' boat ride .. (no disneyland type vacations without the grand-kids please and thank you!) don't mind hitting some exciting CITIES (if there are historic sites to visit .. and HA! .. i'm ALWAYS up for some great PRIMITIVE antiquing! will probably include Cape Canaveral .. any other ideas? xo, frannie

judy .. those places sound gret too .. actually, we will do some 'planning' .. but have no 'schedule' .. or need to 'hurry back' .. so we did plan to visit georgia and alabama ... we did some of those great places in south carolina .. but i don't think we got to the 'historic' part ... if it's WARM enough .. we'll add that to our agenda.

NOW ... i'm sure hoping we do this instead of panama canal or mexico .. but .. mostly .. we jus' want to find some warm sunshine .. sooooo .. i guess i'm up to whatever hank wants to do the most. i'll google all these places and show them to him. thanks to all ya'll!!! xo

I know South Carolina and Georgia are not in your plans, but maybe you could head straight east then south to the end of Florida...if you had enough time.

Lol...I've been to Florida many times. My father and step mother had a house there. My brother used to live there. Ah yes....palmetto bugs...I visited my brother's home and stayed there many years ago. I remember one night, I flicked on the kitchen light and you can hear the scurrying of those bugs. There were so many of them! Creepy! The bugs down there are very healthy...:( Another place you might like is Saint Augustine, which is much further north, maybe 3 to 4 hours from the Keys. It's very historic and there's a lot of information about the railroads, as (I think) it was one of the original
railroads. There are museums and antique shops and restaurants. I found that fun. There's a old fort you can check out (Hank might like that). Further south, on the east coast, there's Cape Canaveral, with the space travel and museaums. That might be interesting. One year, we drove the east coast of South Carolina and stopped in the lowlands, Charleston (really great historic town)! On the side of the roads, you see people selling their grass baskets in all forms. They make it themselves and it's a tradition down there. Going further south, there's Savannah, Georgia. I loved Savannah, and you would flip out looking at the homes (there are tours), which are very grand and the gardens. It's a wonderful place to see!

well, the weather is great here too, but I think it's also the fact that you can grow just about anything here...and some areas are really still into their roots/southern hospitality and so forth...but of course as with any state..there are areas where tourism is the biggest thing they are concerned with..same here in Florida..
but the towns I mentioned..especially Micanopy,Macintosh and Dunnellon are really cute old fashioned town where the antiquing is still pretty good.
Sarasota, FL might be of interest to you..
they have the Ringling Museum there..with lovely old ornate circus carts. There are other amazing museums there too, and the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens..then over on Buena Vista Avenue in Sarasota..some of the best Amish home cooking you'll ever taste over at Yoder's Family Resturaunt.

for some nice antiquing in Florida and for a nice historic town you'd probably like both Micanopy and Macintosh..both located right outside of Ocala, FL.
Also a nice antiquing area..and lots of history(home of Bones Mizzell and Acrefoot Johnson/look them up on the web)but not a necessarily "pretty town" is Arcadia,FL...it's where David Copperfield(the magician) has been known to shop for antiques.
Another good antiquing area is Dunnellon,FL again right outside of Ocala, FL.

Frannie, I think you would really enjoy Key West. It's a funky, quirky place that's colorful and fun. You can tour some cute cottages, Hemingway's home, and I think President Truman's (I know it's a president, but not sure...) house. Of course the shopping and restaurants and seafood are great...not to mention the bars. The drive down there is nice. You go through several keys and the water is beautiful. You would be going by Miami, so you could stop there and the Everglades are around there. Each night, at sunset, people gather on the beach (or pier) and there's a celebration. Cool place!
