I am all for remembering key figures of history and this country but I'm so tired of the race talk. I wish we'd all remember we're AMERICANS!!!:) Hooray for patriotism. I really miss that like what we had after 9/11. How quickly we forget. I think I'm sentimental after Charlie Wilsons War. Makes me proud to be an american. I guess I'm not PC or really want to be.

A 30 day limit on campaigning would make me sooooo happy!

Beohemiangel, you're right - Hairspray does deal with the issues in a light but very good way. And you're right - religion also separates people. It seems Americans all try very hard to keep those divisions intact instead of letting them go and uniting as a country. Only in times of great tragedy (9/11) have we all been able to do that. Very very sad!

Wow - what I wouldn't give for a 30 day limit on campaigning. I am sick up to here of it already and we still have 9 months to go.

Hidy ho!

I'm not American, just a very proud Canadian, but I hear you. :) I've always found the best 'cure' for racism was to travel, really get into another culture, find out for yourself that where you came from isn't the only way to live.

It's been interesting watching your politics from this side of the border. We only allow our politicians 30 days to campaign; I can't imagine having to deal with it for a year!!!!

I live in the north and the racism is palpable between white people and First Nations. Until you get to know someone personally, individually, it's really hard for people to separate them from the generalizations and stereotypes. Just look at the continuing "men vs. women" relations that go on! One species, one race, one planet. Why make it harder than it already is?

Cheers,
Anastasia :)

PS Rachel, I'm sorry you experience this in your family and things. Did you catch Oprah today where they talked about the couple that was a white man black woman and they were thrown in jail etc and took it to the (I think) supreme court. It was interesting.

Well yeah I agree but the thing is I experienced it in college. I dated a Pakistani for 2.5 year RIGHT after 9/11. I just fell in love with him. People were SUPER ignorant. He won almost every he met over with his charisma. I always said he should be a diplomat. He also loved our country so much. I also lived with a black roomie that was from philly. This was an experience for lil ol me from ligonier with all white people. I still have no problem but she also showed racism towards ME! It always goes both ways. We forget that too. I still think if you love someone so be it. I don't agree with who some of my gfs have married for reasons of drunks, jail time, etc, but they are big girls. I have friends of ALL races and blessed to have friends all around the world that I keep in touch with.

Yeah we are AMERICANS first. I'm tired of the hyphening or PC labels for people. American period. I love our country. I just wish we'd all realize everyday is American day! Reminds me of Hairspray where she says "I wish everyday was Negroe day" That is a good movie that deals with that issue in a lighter manner but still educates people.

You know what else is funny my bf is catholic, I'm presbyterian. I have experienced funny lil OH you're presbyterian. It's a religion and Christian let it go. I thought that issues was dead way before my time. Apparently not. It always gets under my skin like oh I'm not good enough because I'm not your faith?! Silly.

YAY for us americans and us farmgirls!!!!

it is sad to say that racism will probably never end. i just wish that a time would come where we realize that despite skin color or nationality, we are all Americans..
being Native American i hear the stereotypical things that people say about Indians all the time, and it really bothers me. They focus on the negative, and forget about the positive..

Life is too short to be narrow minded.
RachelLeigh Posted - Jan 21 2008 : 6:28:30 PM
The problem is, racism is still a huge factor in this country. Many people will not vote for Barack Obama simply because he's black. I guess I see things from a different perspective because I am a white woman married to the love of her life - who just happens to be a black man. And I see racist attitudes toward him every once in a while, even though he's more educated than most people that I know! We deal with racism in our own family at almost every holiday event. I would love to say that we are all one group called Americans but unfortunately, many people in this country don't see it that way. They see themselves as White Americans, Black Americans, etc.....Until racism and stupidity ends, talks about race will not end.

I really think we lost what we had for patriotism. Don't get me started on history. Who knows the presidents but most people can rattle off who Jlo Britney Paris Nicole etc are....and all the stars! Heck who knows who their mayor governor or anything like that is? I did a report about that in college. If you survey people like Jay Leno has about different historic or political figures that make our country tick they have no clue. I just hate that we have certain months dedicated to things that should be all year and other things that aren't even celebrated. I think we have taken a turn for the worse. I'm not hopeless but I also read how in schools noone is getting the kids prepared for the real world. People aren't going to baby you or think of how it will make you feel or give you a job for being the worst at what you do. Glenn Beck talked about how the 14th place child gets a trophy, when in reality you stink and need to work on this. We are not preparing kids for life. I have told the kids I teach look you get away with stuff here but wait till you go to HS or to the real world, its not like that. I think I'm on a soapbox

Icouldn't agree more!!! I just want my country back, where we said the pledge in school in the morning and it was ok and you could have a cross on a hillside and that was ok and the president was the person that would do the best job not who appealed to a certain race or religion. What happened to the patriotism we had after 9/11? when everyone cared about our country.

I wish people would just see everyone else as a person and not even consider race, gender or religion... I hope that some day we all get there.

I'm with you, Bridget. But you see, it's good for their run for the White House. Whatever group they happen to be with, they're all for them. Then on to the next group where they're all for THEM. It really makes me sick.
