I, Alyssa Reid, hereby pledge to save the earth and its inhabitants in any way that I can. I plan to put forth my energy to do everything in my power to effect a positive change in the planet. I will effect this change by:

Walking when possible
Turning off lights when leaving the room
Switching to energy efficient light bulbs
Buying an eco-friendly vehicle for our next purchase
When we buy a house we will replace all carpet with environmentally friendly flooring such as bamboo
Reducing use of plastics in daily life
Growing as much as my own food as possible and only growing organically
Supporting those who show a concern for the environment and boycotting those who trash the environment
Reusing and recycling
Rethinking the "essentials" in life that are not so essential

Please join me by taking the save the Earth pledge and telling us how you plan to save the planet and all who live here.

Great post Alee... I have already made a pledge like yours. Another great website to check out is: www.newdream.org They have a program called "turn the tide" which costs nothing to join, they give you 9 simple things which you can do right now to reduce your carbon footprint, they also keep you in touch with environmental issues through email updates (if you choose to sign up for them) and let you know when to contact your state representatives about environmental issues coming into legislature. The Turn the tide intro link is as follows: http://www.newdream.org/tttoffline/readmore.php
We can make a difference!!

I'm making the same pledge Alee. And yes, at least we can make a difference still. That I believe. I want to educate others in our community on living a lower impact life style and protecting the earth.

Thanks Karin! Yes, we all should live a low impact life, and you are right, the more educated we become, the more concerned we get. Doug and I will soon be buying our own house (hopefully this year, but at least in the next few years) and I am so excited to be able to plant trees and have a huge garden. If I am able to get any sort of acreage, I am going to plant a mini forest of trees, shrubs, and garden plants. I am also going to look into planting trees in burn areas of national forest to help meet my yearly quota of trees once I "use up" my land space. I think we all would be suprised at the places we can tuck a tree here and there. Not only will be be beautifying an area, but we will be helping the environment.

Logging concerns me as well. I hope that us tree planters can stay ahead of the chainsaws!

I just calculated my house's carbon footprint at http://www.carbonfootprint.com/

We need to plant 5 trees each year to offset our carbon footprint- which means we should be planting like 10-15 to help, right?

Alee,

Great idea! I have been extremely concerned about the environment for years, since the mid-70s when I was a teenager. In my "past life", before marriage and a kid, I worked for the Forest Service, Park Service, and as an environmental educator. The latter two jobs were great in that I could help people learn about nature and the environment. As I'm sure you know, once you know more about something you tend to care more about it.

I drive a lot in my life, to and from work, at work (I drive a bookmobile), with my daughter, to my mom's... I have a Subaru that gets mediocre gas mileage (about 25)(far from what my 1979 Subaru got) so I'm filling my gas tank about once a week. I'm trying to make up for that in other ways. I have a "fleet" of cloth bags that I take shopping, or I forgo a bag altogether when I can. I recycle any and everything thing I can. I plan to get a veggie garden growing this spring. And I'm trying to raise my daughter to love and appreciate the earth.

I visited friends in Missouri this fall. They are well-educated, nature-loving people. BUT they are skeptics about global warming. My theory is, even if you don't totally believe it, why not do the simple things in your life that could make a difference, even if it is nothing more than an exercise to live more simply and leave less of a trace on the planet? The saying in a natural area is to take only pictures and leave only footprints. Why can't we, in general as a society, live more like this?

Thanks for the topic! Karin
