Is anyone else here on their county fair board? I serve on ours and I wanted to try to gather some ideas from others of ideas that worked, didn't work, etc. and if their fair has a website or not.

Toni,
I have to say that yours is very interesting. Our Woodford County Fair has the carnival (but it is from a good company) and then we have:
Motorsports: Demolition Derby, Tractor Pull, Garden Tractor Pull, Mud Sling, Truck Pull, Mud Run & Ladies Dash for Cash (they have to run/walk in the mud to run for money), Motorcycle Poker Run, Car & Truck Show

Pageants: Tiny Miss/Mister, Little Miss/Mister, Preteen, Teen, Miss, and adorable babies (different age groups)

Livestock: Memorial Day Harness Racing (held at the Red Mile in Lexington), Mule & Donkey Show, Open Western Pleasure Horse Show, Horse Pull, Miniature Horse Show, KY Mountain Saddlebred Horse Show, Beef Show, Sheep Show, Greased Pig Contest

4-H Events: 4-H Bicycle Rodeo, 4-H Dog Show, 4-H Tractor Driving Contest, sheep show, beef show

"Other" contests: Backseat Driver Contest (they have a golf cart and the driver is blindfolded while the passenger tells them where to go), Karaoke Contest, Kiwanis Youth Night (sports for kids), Parent-Child Look-A-Like Contest, Youth Talent Contest

We have the Home Ec & 4-H exhibits, which have been growing in numbers. The Garden Club puts on a flower show and we have an art show in with the Home Ec exhibits.

We have a large pavillion where the pageants and entertainment take place. We usually try to have a band or something before pageants and right after, but that is going to change this year I think. We're trying to figure out some entertainment for this year. We've had rockabilly, cajun, gospel, etc.

That is very interesting that you guys don't charge anything. We have to charge to help pay for the carnival, awards, etc. Here in Kentucky, they have cracked down on a lot of carnivals mainly because of accidents. Our dept of ag is doing more checks on carnival rides now.

I like the piggie race idea. We have those at our state fair. They have tried rodeo in the past and it went over one year and then it just died out. Back at my hometown, rodeos are very successful. Up here, motorsports are the big hit. Oh - and we have the commercial exhibits like you do.

Our mule show is the only one in Kentucky that gives points towards the National NASMA points championship. The weekend after our show will be the National Show in Frankfort, just about 10 minutes of us.

If you get FarmWorld magazine/newpaper, you can see some of my photographs last summer of our fair.

Do you guys do a Fair Catalog? We do one with our newspaper and we are working on designing one now.

Oh and our website is www.woodfordcountyfair.com
We are in the process of updating it, so the complete schedule, info is not up....just those events we know for sure.

We don't have a county fair (Boo!), but my favorite part of any county fair are the piglet races.

I agree about the carnival thing.

Hi Jessica!

My husband is on our fair board and is the livestock superintendent, so we are pretty active at the county fair, even though our only child isn't even a year old yet!:)

Ours is called Sullivan Co. 4-H Fair, as the emphasis is on the 4-H kids and we do not have a carnival like many other fairs do. I am VERY happy about this because I find the whole carnival scene a bit creepy. The county where I grew up in TN had a fair, but it was almost all carnival and little to no 4-H. There were beauty pageants every night and a horse/mule race was the only livestock involvement. So, needless to say, I am very impressed with the devotion to the kids and 4-H here in our county.

Pretty much every night we have an event in the grandstand, such as truck/tractor pull, mud bog, demo derby, quad drags, and a horse pull. We make a lot of money from these events. Oh, I forgot to mention, we also don't charge admission to get into or park at our fair, our money comes from these events.

We also have the Queen contest, baby contest, cricket spitting, gospel sing, fish fry, dog agility, antique tractor pull and show, a dance for under 18 kids, ummmmmm, I am sure there is more, but that is about all I can think of. We have a large pig show, 260 hogs last year, cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits, llama/alpaca, and horse shows. We also have the livestock auction.

We do not have a website for our fair, yet, that I am aware of. I will ask my husband about anything else that they have, or tried and didn't like. I have only lived up here for less than three years, so he knows much more about it than I do.

Oh, we also have a large, very nice AC'd building where the pageants are held, dinners are served, and the commercial exhibits are set up. That building is rented out throughout the year to various groups and the fairboard makes money that way, too.

I know that there is another woman on here that is in charge of her county's fair, she probably has some good ideas for you. I know that Versailles is beautiful, so I am sure that you all do have a great fair. Have fun this year!

Could do a dunking booth! haha. We have a lot of motorsports, livestock shows, pageants and more. We have the most home ec and 4H exhibits that I have ever seen at a fair. Last weekend we got another award for our hard work and that was very neat to receive.
