Well, first he is 6'4" and I am 5'8", so I fit right into his nook..but that is not the reason...well right now...
He is being SOOOO supportive of me pursuing a teaching degree and job. He taught history for a few years in between his time(s) in the military. He has so many suggestions, ideas, and he was excited for me!!! I am not excited!!! OR maybe that is just the third cup of cocoa  , but anywho. He know I am burnt out on college right now and really am questioning my job choice right now...I just feel so lucky and happy....just had to share.
Any teachers our there? I want to teach the little one's- say third grade and down. Suggestions? Ideas? Schools? Musings...

I suppose it depends on the area - I was lucky - I got every position I applied for. You can usually go online and look for openings in your area. In some districts, HS is associated with the school district and the job openings are posted on the district site. Others are administered by private social service agencies, so you have to find those on the national HS directory by area. Hope that helps. |

It was absolutely my favorite job I ever had. I had several different positions while with Head Start - with two different agencies. I was a "Family Development Specialist" which is a home visiting teacher for Early Head Start (prenatal to age three) I did this in downtown Seattle with immigrant and refugee families. It was the BEST! There's nothing like working with families that really appreciate what you do. I went into their homes weekly and helped them set goals for their children and families and develop strategies and action plans to acheive those goals. I also visited pregnant moms and went over prenatal development and care with them. After that, I was an Early Head Start classroom teacher - 12 mo. to 3 years. Same thing, only in the classroom. Finally, finished off that career with classroom Head Start teacher - 3 and 4 year olds. Lots of fun - kids that age can really grasp a lot of concepts. I had some neat parents too, that were setting goals like developing empathy, and kindness, instead of your usual "learn to count to 20 and write their name." Really had to stretch to develop concrete strategies and measurements for reaching goals like that. If my mom hadn't gotten Alzheimers I would still be doing that. I loved it all, but the best by far was the home visiting job. Depending on which agency you work for, the pay, benies and ongoing training are great too. It's tough and demanding work, but the rewards are great. |

How was Headstart for you? I would love to do that, helping those kiddos achieve so much and learn. Wonderful!!

I was a certificated Head Start teacher and I loved it. I really miss the kids and the parents. Both my daughters are in education - one is a high school Spanish teacher and the other one is a high school asst. principal. I don't know how they spend every day with high school kids - about 6 years old is my limit!! |
