Just a tip...
I knew about the red light on cars, but not the *77
It was about 1:00 pm. in the afternoon, and Lauren was driving to visit a friend.
An UNMARKED police car pulled up behind her and put his lights on.
Lauren's parents have always told them never to pull over for an unmarked car on the side of the road, but rather to wait until they get to a gas station, etc.
Lauren had actually listened to her parents advice, and promptly called *77 on her cell phone to tell the police dispatcher that she would not pull over right away.
She proceeded to tell the dispatcher that there was an unmarked police car with a flashing red light on his rooftop behind her. The dispatcher checked to see if there were police cars where she was and there weren't, and he told her to keep driving, remain calm and that he had back up already on the way.
Ten minutes later 4 cop cars surrounded her and the unmarked car behind her.
One policeman went to her side and the others surrounded the car behind.
They pulled the guy from the car and tackled him to the ground.
The man was a convicted rapist and wanted for other crimes.
I never knew about the *77 Cell Phone Feature, but especially for a woman alone in a car, you should not pull over for an unmarked car.
Apparently police have to respect your right to keep going to a safe & quiet place.
You obviously need to make some signals that you acknowledge them (i.e. put on your hazard lights) or call *77 like Lauren did.
Too bad the cell phone companies don't generally give you this little bit of wonderful information.

New York State has passed a law that does not allow you to use a hand-held mobile telephone while you drive. If you use a hand-held mobile telephone while you drive, except to call 911 or to contact medical, fire or police personnel about an emergency, you can receive a traffic ticket and pay a maximum fine of $100 and mandatory surcharges of $50.
This violation is not a probationary license violation, and the DMV does not assign any driver violation points.

Zahara and other NY residents: you might not be aware that it's not just illegal to use the cell phone while driving. You can also get a ticket if you pull over to make a cell phone call. You have to shut the car off completely. My mom got ticketed for this just a few weeks ago (in Rochester). She pulled over to take a call, but left the car running. Who would have thought? |

well, I live in NY state and it is illegal to drive while using a cell phone - too many people getting in accidents, so they made it illegal. Technically if you have a physically attached to the car one - meaning you do not have it in your hands - that is legal, do not know why as it is still distracting.
I know of people who have gotten tickets - they are pulling people over for it. It was announced everywhere, here before it became law.
I have a cell phone that I bought about a year ago and if you dial 911 the phone goes into a different mode, locks every thing else out and starts tracking the phone - they can tell where you are within a couple of miles - depends on how many cell towers are in the area.
it is just my guess, but if you dialed 911 I imagine you will not get a ticket.

Hey, wait a minute! Using a cell phone while driving is illegal in New York (and probably some other states as well). So calling 911 might just give a real cop another reason to write you a ticket! Be careful. |

I'm sure I would not have thought to do that. Like the snopes info says, we are conditioned to obey cops. (When we understand what they are ordering us to do!) I wonder how many cops would take kindly to drivers questioning their credentials and calling 911 to verify that they are who they say? I saw something on the news recently about a driver who was tasered on Thanksgiving because he was too slow getting his license and registration out.
Assuming that it works, though, having a cell phone could come in handy even in a legitimate police pullover. I've only been pulled over once, and it actually turned into a bit of a police chase. At first I didn't realize the officer was trying to pull me over. We were crawling along in bumper to bumper traffic and he sat behind me for several minutes before suddenly putting on his lights. I thought he was trying to pull out around me to respond to a call. I finally realized he was after me (!) when he followed me down a side street. By then, of course, he had another car converging on me and a bike cop who happened to be nearby got in on the action as well. How humiliating. All he wanted was to write me a warning because the bungee cord holding my bumper in place was obscuring my license plate. I'd like to think a cell phone could have prevented that debacle. |

wait, sorry ladies if this is false? I didn't know about snopes. I do agree regardless always call 911 for this type of incident! Never take a chance.

Snopes is always good for double-checking any chain emails that you get.
That said, *77 does work in Virginia but 911 is a safe bet anywhere.

this is a hoax and *77 will NOT work in all states. 911 is your best bet if you ever have any doubt.

Ladies, make sure you read the snopes link that Alee provided. yes, this does happen, but as snopes says, and my friend shari who's on the Caddo Parish Sheriff's office here says, call 911 first. You've got a better chance of getting the information you need.
