My good friend Ron, has a buddy who just shipped out--he's an old navy buddy, who re-enlisted at 34 in the army. Ron has asked his friends, here, to drop him a line, but I'd like to also send a holiday package. Can anyone tell me where to find a site that says what's allowed/what's not? I know there's a few gals on here with military connections, so what have you done or will do?

Wouldn't in a million years, Alee. It wasn't "ok" in WWII, it still isn't as far as I can tell.
I went on Anysolider, and one of the boys requested for his unit any of the following: Maxim magazine, FHM, Sports Illustrated Swim Suit Edition, Stuff....Now, I don't know if any of you gals have seen these, but I respectfully decline. I guess he thinks folks are dumber than they look!

One thing I want to mention- Please don't send any uhm- provacative- rated items to the soldiers, even as a gag. They have to destroy any items and even magazines, DVD's and such that show too much skin. They do this out of respect for the cultures in the countries that they are in.

We can afford to adopt a few guys and gals, they have much greater needs then we do. This is a good site too. I'm just rattlin' on in letters from home =) to go with the cards and goodies

anysoldier.com is an excellant website with a long list of what and what not to send. Also advice on how to pack things for shipping.

JR Liggett is offering the biodegradable soap to soldiers at APO addresses at 30% off. I used this soap while I was onboard an aircraft carrier and it works great. Also, jerky, baby wipes, cross word puzzles, ANYTHING homemade- letters, pictures, small albums, blankets, etc...something small but personal was always appreciated. Tea w/small packet of organic sugar, batteries, disposable cameras, letter writing items, hand santizer, foot powder, socks, undies, t-shirts (white or brown, depending on which service you are sending to).
As long as it can't melt, can take a few week of shipping and isn't breakable, you should be ok. |

I would agree that it is difficult to start with someone you don't know! The organization I go through is like that and even though I've gone through at least 10 soldiers it doesn't get any easier...lol I've found that when you write letters they like the everyday of you life, something that's different from what they're dealing with. Have fun with it!

Thanks so much, Elizabeth! It's difficult to "start" ya know? I mean, especially when it's someone you don't really know that well--I guess, if he doesn't use items, he can surely share with someone else!
I'm cutting and pasting this into a word doc so I can print it out and keep it in my wallet for when I shop this week. Somewhere I read that all holiday packages should be shipped by 12/3 to soldiers in Iraq. I better get moving!!!

I haven't found a good one that's got just a list but I can tell you the things I've been recomended to send by others with much experience with this kind of thing...this list came with the soldier I currently am a penpal with and is from an organization that has supported deployed soldiers for several years.
"CARE PACKAGE SUGGESTIONS: Holiday support, letters and photos from home, travel size toiletries, shaving gel (non-aerosol), razors, OTC cold meds and pain relievers, nail files, nail clippers, healthy grab and go snacks, beef jerky, powdered drink mix singles, boot inserts, white athletic socks, white ankle socks, black or green boot socks, foot care products, tan boot laces, shower shoes, a pillow w/extra pillow cases, boxers/boxer briefs for men, undergarments/sports bras, and girly items for the women, non-aerosol air fresheners, newspapers, current magazines, DVD movies, CD music, handheld games, AA & AAA batteries, board games, card games, stationery/pens w/black ink, cold weather gear including: blanket, hand warmers, hot drink mixes, knit hat, etc., AT&T phone cards, Holiday decorations of all kinds, NEW all occasion/Holiday cards for him to mail home."

I am planning on getting some of my friends to fill out Christmas cards to send over with my next box and I'll probably pick up a bunch of candy canes and individual packages of hot chocolate and coffee to add to them so my soldier can either enjoy them for himself or pass them out to his buddies.
