SMOKY MOUNTAINS ... life and nature
What a beautiful magazine!! It is the 'premiere issue.
Got it at one of the 'visitor centers' at Cade's Cove in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee.
For only $30. a year .. you receive a subscription to this magazine (two issues per year i think). Also a subscription to the BEAR PAW newsletter .. The WALKER SISTERS of Little Greenbrier.
"A narrow gravel road leads up about a mile from the Little Greenbrier School in the Great Smoky Mountains, past a chortling stream and a forest floor greened with ferns, laurel, and shiny galax. The road swings back into a small clearing where, amid stout boxwoods and filmy apple blossoms, a weathered log cabin remains, as much a part of the landscape as the grand old oak and hickory trees that surrounds it. "
Six women (sisters) lived their entire lives in this setting. They were the Walker Sisters .. Margarete, Polly, Martha, Nancy, Louisia and Hettie .. who spent their childhoods, grew into young women, and lived out their final years here. Six sisters, all born int he nineteenth century. There was a seventh sister too .. she is the only sister among them to marry and move 'off'. When the National Park Service purchased hundreds of acres .. most families found homes outside the park .. but the sisters were allowed to stay.
I SOOOOOOOO WANTED TO VISIT THEIR HOME ... but was told that the area is CLOSED right now becaue of 'heavy bear activity!' Well .. i guess that would be enuff to keep me outta' there until my next visit!
What a fascinating little book this is .. and OH MY!!! the treasures these women owned in this small little cabin ... quilts, coverlets, baskets, gardening tools. They lived 'off the land' for most of their lives .. purchasing only things they could not make or grow in the later years of their lives.
We, who live today in 'luxury' owe our very being to strong, independent women pioneers like the Walker Sisters.

jeannie .. friend, kathy and i are going to return next year for at least a week when the Appalachian Museum festival happens (october, i believe) .. we're going to rent a cabin nearby for our stay .. and roam 'out' from there. kathy commented that 'cabin rentals' are a 'biggie' in this area .. but then .. there are wondeful 'cabins' ... and there are yuckky 'cabins! will surely find DILLARD if it is within a 50 mile radius! thanks for the tip! i've already started a TENNESSEE TRAVEL trip list!
my hair was getting that long when i first joined the mj farmgurl group .. and although i did love the 'gypsy' look .. i decided that at my age .. i was starting to look like a 'demented' gypsy .. and since i NEVER pull my hair back .. i just needed to go with a more 'youthful' funky look .. sooooo .. OFF it came .. and i try to change the color a little each season. have 'harvest' shades now .. might go for a more CHRISTMASSY-RED in December! sure wish i had that 'washboard' stomach back again!!! yep! it's on my 'new year's resolution list again already!

On the other thread where you speak of your trip to the Smokies, Frannie, I posted that a friend of mine owns a primitives shop in Dillard. If you are up that way again you should stop by Tippecanoe Traders on 441 - you would love her stuff. No touristy items - and each piece has a story....that is why she buys them and chooses them for her shop. It is like each piece in her shop is a friend to her, but she loves to share them! She is one of my dearest friends and great to chat with, too.
We have stayed previously in the Turnstone Cabins in Otto NC. They are really tucked away, and there are only four of them. An abandoned OLD cabin is on the property. A couple in our age range owns them and rents them, but I tell you it feels like I step back in time when we stay there. They have done a first class job of siting them along a creek.
Like you, I could live there, but I would never give up being close to my daughter and grandchildren.
By the way, your photos of you when young...I remember when my hair was that long ((and wore hip huggers), and wish I could still grow it that way. MaryJane is the lucky one - still has long beautiful hair!

we have friends with a christmas-tree farm in the mountains of north carolina .. and it is breath-taking ... we looked in both north carolina and tennessee before moving to kentucky .. but couldn't find any 'olde cabins' available .. lovely states .. both .. but i do prefer kentucky for lots of reasons .. the biggest being it is hours closer to our children and grand-children. but it is lovely that they are close enough for us to visit whenever we wish.

Just returned today from a week in the Dillard, GA and Marshall,NC areas respectively. Had picnic lunch in the Nantahala Forest and stayed with friends in a house on a hill outside of Asheville with a vista that took our breath away. Saw deer, and bear tracks around a pond. The colors were so lovely. I did not want to come home! And we discovered the little wonderful town of Jonesboro, Tenn. Loved the shops in Waynesville, NC, and took photos of abandoned cabins. Has anyone been up Betty's Creek Road in Otto, NC? Wow. What a great place, the Smokies.

Going through the Smoky Mountains is one trip I will never forget. It is the most beautiful place. It just took our breath away.We left SC and drove through them I swear we stopped at every single outlook point. It brought tears to my eyes it was
so breathtaking.I wouldn't of missed it for anything.

I love the Smokey's. I loved in Asheville and Franklin Nc for a couple of years.
