Didn't know where to ask this . I have an odd size dinning table that our family just recently started using as our every day table.
I need a table cloth to fit a 48 x 48" square table. I hate the cheap vinyl ones butI need something that will hold up to a 3year old messy eater . A Standard off the shelf type table cloth won't fit. I don't mind making one but finding material has been a problem. Any sugestions?

Some times I do my best thinking in the shower! As I was showering this morning I noticed the vinyl liner... You could just buy a clear vinyl shower curtain liner and cut it to size. It's flexible enough and large enough. Plus I think that that it would be a very cheap way to go.

I Have looked at bed sheets . I have had a hard time finding a flat sheet seperate that will fit my room colors and doesn't look like a bedroom. I will keep looking though. I have already tried the placemats seems like the messes always miss the mats! I have seen some Acrylic coated table cloths at a festival this fall. They are expensive but much nicer than vinyl. But I am thinking now by the time I drive around , find material and sew it plus buying a piece of thick clear plastic I might be better off buying the acrylic coated. Does anyone have this type of tablecloth? If so is it worth the money/ here is a link to see them. http://www.lacigale-usa.com/catalog_c160169.html
these are made in europe and since my odd size table is also from Europe they have sizes that fit my table

Would a sturdy bedsheet work? Buy it larger enough to custom cut it down to the proper size, with or without embroidery or lace border?

They also make custom pads for dining room tables, with faux leather or type of cleanable surface. Maybe that would work?

Or, could you use placemats on the bare table, with extra large placemats at least some sort of vinyl mat or other covering where your three-year-old eats?

The vinyl by the yard is 52" and most table cloths you buy are 52" square that is not big enough. I would like to buy mateial to make a cloth one and as emily suggested buy vinyl to put on top. The standard vinyl tablecloths are hard to clean the clear vinyl is smooth and looks like it will clean up nicely and if I have company I could remove it.
I don't shop for material much but I know that most bolts are 45" or 48" which won't work for a 48x48 table.
The oil cloth is also 48"

If It was me I would by the larger round or square one that Jennifer referred too and then cut it down to the right size. Next I would embroider or do some pretty applique to match my decor. After that to protect it I would buy the clear vinyl from JoAnn's in the weight that would drape right for the table.

they have vinyl tablecloth material by the yard at most fabric stores. You could pick out your own pattern and cut it to size for your own table. If necessary, you can stitch two pieces together to make it big enough. It might be easier than trying to find one already in the package.

I have a small table also - about 36" with a leaf. My challenge is it's oblong when the leaf is in, but I have found 52" round or square and 60" round work well. The 60" will have more drape and your little one may pull on it.

oil cloth would be my suggestion. fabric.com has some great patterns that are a good weight.
