But it's all ok. She seemed to be showing signs of diebetes. Drinking tons of water, going #1 a lot and her breath smelled funny. She already has asthma and non-systemic lupus and I was thinking "no more".

Her tests were originally scheduled for this Saturday, but we just couldn't stand the wait and asked for it to be pushed up. The tests came back negative for diabetes but she's low on sodium, calcium, vitamin D and potassium.

The low sodium is why she's not retaining any water and it's apparently just going right through her leaving her still dehydrated. No explanation for the funny smelling breath. But that's ok. I'm thanking God for answering my prayers because I was just beside myself. This is the first time I ever "begged" for anything.

So, I'm pushing the dairy on her and putting her on supplements until her levels return to normal. I'm also temporarily pushing the Gatorade (yuck) to restore her electrolytes. So she'll be just fine.

Oh, my what we go through over our children.

It is amazing what we go through for our children. Thank God diabetes isn't going to be an issue for you. Children are so much work as babies, but that was actually the easy time, it gets harder as they grow older. Just don't let the new mom's hear that!

Alee, she's feeling much better already. She doesn't care for bananas like she did when she was younger, but I'm pushing the oj and multivitamins as well as gatorade.

She doesn't like the gatorade much so I'm going to try your solution on her, Holly.

Heather, I'm not sure if EmergenC is up here. We just have mom & pop type stores. All the big ones are as far (or farther) as the nutrition store. But I'm going to check if Holly's recipe doesn't go over. It took an entire day of nagging to get her to drink one bottle of gatorade. If not, I might be able to get dh to find it down in Boise when he gets off work. He has a hard time finding non-basic things, though.

Frannie, my "little darling" is not so little anymore. She's 17.

I'm thinking that this is all my doing. I've been pushing the healthy stuff and banned excess sugar and salt from our meals. I'm now thinking that she's just too active to cut the salt out of her diet. I've been SOOO successful in cutting out the sugar and salt that she won't even eat the snacks that most kids love anymore. And now look, I'm working hard to GET her to eat/drink salt. I'm not sure where the "happy medium" is here.

You may also look for the "salty drink that saves lives" recipe online, it's what they used in Africa a couple of decades ago during all the droughts to save peoples lives.

Also I really like EmergenC it can be bought any where. It's been out for at least 20 years. It's what people like Stalone used for making Rambo, to keep himself hydrated and energized! It comes in a varity of flavors and other vitamins now added, included potassium. As a heads up I really like the Tangerine, I never liked the lemon lime though, their original flavor. lol

Used to it was only sold at health food stores now it's every where, even walmart! lol But, still Health Food stores seem to have the most varities of it. And Trader Joe's seems to be the cheapest place to get it.

I personally hate gaterade and don't *gasp* beleive in it as much as some of the before mentioned products/recipes.

I ran across a rehydration solution for adults and teens--if it helps at all: 4 cups of clean water--2 Tablespoons of sugar--1/2 teaspoon of salt; Mix all the ingredients until the sugar disappears. You can drink the solution a room temperature. (do not boil the solution because that will reduce the solution's helpfulness)

Lisa-

How is she doing today? Is she feeling better? I hope she is getting that potassium balance worked out because too little potassium can affect the heart.

I will look up a "recharge recipe" on line, Tracy. Thanks for that tip. The closest nutrition store is 40 miles away. Alee, you're probably right about all the water she was drinking flushing out all the other nutrients.

It just amazes me how difficult it can be to keep the proper balance of nutrients in our bodies. For some, like my daughter, it appears to be a very delicate balance without much room for error. We all need salt - but not too little or it causes this - and not too much or it causes that... It can be so confusing; but I'm learning.

Thanks you gals. A couple of you knew what was going on and I just wanted to let you know all was going to be well.

So glad that your daughter will be ok. I also wish my kids really understood what my husband and I go through daily worrying about them! I guess when they all have children, they will finally understand.

Oh I am so glad she doesn't have diabetes! That is so scary! Doug and I were just talking yesterday about what we would do if we or Nora turned out to have diabetes.

You can also stir in just a tiny tiny amount of sodium into her water. She will hardly taste it at all and it will help her with the sodium deficiency. Also canned veggies usually have tons of sodium in them as well.

The fact that she was low on sodium and was drinking so much water probably flushed a lot of the other nutrients out of her system which might be why she is low on other nutrients like the potatssium and calcium.

*hugs*

Amen that the diabetes was -!! yes, they do keep us on our toes!
There is an alternative to Gatorade called Recharge (all natural). Your local health food store may have it or you could look up a recipe to make your own. I have one in a honey cookbook that calls for honey, water and sodium tablets (never tried this but same theory as Gatorade and recharge!!

Artificial colorings and preserves in those foods are not good for a body either but if you need to up the sodium quick, then gatorade for now it is!

Lisa if only children Knew how much mental anguish they put us through, we would never become grandparents. It is just constant worry trying to keep them safe and well.

Friends are the best collectables.
