Right around the corner from us (less than a block away) while we were taking a walk last night, a couple of adults (idiots) rushed around a car on a quad (which is illegal in this town to drive one in city limits anyway) and hit two kids on skateboards and threw the two people on the quad about 30 ft down the road into some bushes. The driver of the quad is in critical condition, the skate boarders are in the hospital with multiple broken bones and I think one has a concussion, and the girl on the back of the quad has a concussion on the front of her head (her head caved in the back of the drivers head).

I can't even imagine driving that fast on our street. My three kids are just a couple that are here... Every other house has at least three kids in it. I am very glad that they didn't hit the two 6 year olds that live next door to where it happened who are always playing out there.

I am a bit bent that these people would be doing this in our neighborhood... I feel bad that they are hurt... but man. I am a bit angry about it.

MJ, thank you for sharing your experience, and {{hugs}}, I am so sorry for your loss. I will update when I know more. They are still in the hospital (well, as far as I know) so we will see what happens.

Thanks for the thoughts. :)

Val

Thank you so much for your kind words Lizabeth. That means a lot to me. I don't often talk about it, but, when a subject like this comes up, I just feel I have too.

Mary Jane in New York, I am sorry for the loss of your daughter. May you have some comfort.

Not only are those ATVs dangerous but almost no one wears a helmet. You don't have to hit your head hard to have a brain injury. Since accidents are the major cause of brain injuries, if you are going to ride, please put on a helmet.

You have no idea how much I hate ATV's. That is how my daughter Karin Anne was killed two weeks before her 16th birthday. She was killed right in our own driveway.(it is 1800ft.long) They are unsafe no matter how careful you are or how good a driver you are. She could ride with the best of them. But, she hit a rock going to fast and lost control. The ATV flew up in the air hit her and crushed her to death. This was a 3 wheeler ATV. But, anyone who has 4 wheelers, don't kid yourself, they are no safer.Right after her accident, they banned any more manufacturing of 3 wheelers. Because so many people had died. Those kids had no business on a street like that. It is amazing that no one was killed. I beg any of you that have ATV's don't be fooled into thinking it can never happen to you because believe me it can. Small kids have absolutely no business on them for any reason.
Any parent that allows this is really asking for trouble.

I think this is the incident that came through the ER where I work. I was dumbfounded to think people would be doing such a stupid thing...a quad in a neighborhood. that is a brilliant idea isn't it?
Wow, Val, to imagine it could have been worse--more children injured, or even you and your family who were out walking. yikes.

There have been 3 or four kids killed on 4 wheelers in this county in the last month or so. Well, they aren't really kids, but teenagers...Even my next door neighbor flipped their large go cart with a 2 year old in the seat!
People just arent so safe.

What a horrible thing to happen. It is amazing how one moment of poor judgement can impact not only your life but the lives of all those around you. I hope all recover completely and I hope you don't have anymore speed demons racing up your street.

I know how you feel. I live on a pretty busy street for our small town. I am surrounded by people who have kids and people race up and down this street day and night. I see kids playing unsupervised and I feel my blood pressure rise because I get anxious for them. So far we haven't had any accidents involving kids and I hope it stays that way!

Val what a horrible thing to happen. It really makes you hold your little ones closer and be thankful for each moment. I agree with the thought of hoping that all recover without further incident.

On a more pleasant thought: Welcome to MJ's and I love your blog. You are a very good writer!!

WOW that is scary!
A couple weeks ago my co-worker had his daughter involved in a 4 wheeler accident.
She got away with only bruises and scratches, but the other 2 were killed!

Val, How awful to have to see that. I am always amazed at how many accidents could be prevented if people would just think.

OH, Val. I can understand your anger -- this accident obviously didn't need to happen -- very preventable. I hope all involved will heal completely and that this will cause people to SLOW DOWN!
