I do it all the time, mostly so that I can walk a straight path through my house, but also because there are so many needy causes out there that can convert people's reusables into $$ for their charities. One cause that is near and dear to me is the Wildlife Sanctuary in Colorado http://www.wildlife-sanctuary.org/
They are having a garage sale to raise $$ Sept 22-23, and are asking for donations for the sale. I gave them a call and today Pat's (who started the sanctuary)son came over to pick up all the items we had for them. If you watched "Growing up Black Leopard" about Eddy, this is the place where Eddy lives.
Enuff about me, what do YOU do to contribute to your community/causes/charities that are near and dear to you? I'd love to hear about it.

I usually do a once a year clean-out. I give clothes to the Salvation Army. My mom donates her time to the Habitat For Humanity thrift stores. they sell most everything else but clothes, so any pile-up of stuff goes there. All those procedes go to build the houses. |

My husband donates time (unloading the truck & organizing food on shelves) & we donate food/$$ to the local food pantry. Clothing & household misc goes to Salvation Army/Goodwill. We donate cash to church and we have an AWANA program for the kids that I donate treats to, for their weekly meetings. Our local Weavers' Guild has donated blankets to the W.I.C. program locally, and I just got information about the local "Binkie Patrol" that handles donations of baby quilts & blankets & bereavement gowns & caps to local hospitals.
There are so many worthwhile local causes. We all have people in our own neighborhoods who need help, so we like to keep our donations local.
Time--good question, Tasha! Especially when you have little kids at home! But, you know it's time well spent if it's spent helping others who need it!! Like Sunshine, I keep something in my purse all the time to work on--crochet, knitting, drop spinning, hand sewing--something, and it's amazing what you can accomplish in those little snatches of time waiting here and there! It's the big projects that stump me. If it's not portable, it's probably not going to get done very quickly in my life.

we donate whatever we are not using anymore as well as bounty from the garden that I have bumper. We donate money when we can to MPR, Sierra Club, St. Jude's Children's Research and Disable Vets. We participate in a few fundraising auctions from time to time as well, where we donate some of our products to raise money for whatever. Most recently it was an auction for a local girl who got into a terrible accident. Two bags of laundry detergent raised $80! YAY! During Katrina we donated to the Red Cross and I use to to the Relay for LIfe...before I had kids. I still contribute to them as well though as they are near and dear to my heart.
If you all remember the mama we helped with the diapers for her allergic baby...that was one of the most recent hands on that I have done.
Where do we all get the time for anything!?

We donate good, used clothing; and usually around the holidays one of the third grade teachers at my kids' school organizes a food drive for the food pantry in town. I try to give my kids some money, and we go shopping. They learn to shop to buy as much as they can with the money they have, and they learn generosity and charity by donating to others who may not have much! |

I used to donate my time (2 years of it) to a rural animal shelter (until I broke my own spirit). I donate clothes to charity, and I volunteer at the VA Nursing Home, visiting the elderly vets, helping them with bingo, what have you. I am currently looking in to being a court appointed advocate for juveniles in the system. Hoping that will be something I can do!

I do the usual and donate clothes. I go through my familys draws every season and donate clothes that we do not use any more. I make a point not to donate anything that has holes though, these charities need decent clothes that they can sell and give to the needy. I save the clothes with holes in them for rags and use them for cleaning. I also donate my time to our local school. Teachers are over worked and need our help.

I crochet baby items for Heartfelt Angels in Need. They give baby items to local hospitals for parents who lose a child or have very little and need something to take their baby home in, etc... We also crochet hearts and angels for families of tragedy such as Virginia Tech.

Donate mateiral to VaNessa Behan nursery, for kids and parents in crisis. In past I helped make some of those quilts. Love doing it cause they take them home with them, it is all there very own.
