BEREA
good morning gurlfrenz! autumn is on the edges of the morning here in central kentucky! honey hunk and i wandered to BEREA last week to gather with my very bestest childhood gurlfren ... grace and her wonderful husband, charles! we arrived a little early .. soooo .. hank got a newspaper and sat in the 'great room' of the beautiful Boone Tavern (where we stayed for a coupla' nights while there) .. and i hopped right back in the car and raced to SOMETHING OLDE antiques shoppe .. greeted by sweet Karen and RAN through the mall .. cuz' grace and charles were due to meet us at any moment. my MISSION on this trip .. was to find some sweet 'prissies' for sofia's Tea Party. (i found a cute little 'bell' to 'ring in tea-time' .. and some adorable teensy little tea cups which i hung on silk ribbons .. will hang them from the 'giving tree' in front of their home along with 'pink and green tulle' ... photos of sofia of her first year of life .. baby poetry .. and cornucopias filled with candies. ohhhh .. i will post pics of the party here soon!

hit my favorite 'used bookstore' in town .. and of course, got a coupla' books (cook books this time!)

and when i arrived back at the Boone Tavern .. everyone was sitting and catching up on all the news since we last saw each other (on our Mississippi River Paddleboat Cruise) early this year.

We all hit the streets .. but alas and alack .. by the time we'd finished sitting and talking .. all but ONE store was closed .. oh my .. but honey hunk saw a pottery colandar that he liked (yep! i'm training him right!) and he bought it for us. They also had a fun wooden 'skittles' game .. that we all played. Charles was the Champion! I only got MINUS points!!!

Went to a fun Italian Pizzaria and had yummy pizza .. then back to the hotel for a little more talking. Grace and Charles had been driving for about 7 hours .. so we hit the bed 'fairly early' so we could be up and 'at em' .. early the next morning.

Being an 'early riser' .. i jumped up outta' bed .. pulled my britches on .. and headed for the lobby for a cuppa' coffee ... took my 'laptop' computer .. and wrote a reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeely LONG e-mail to ya'll tellling you all about BEREA college (got my info from a book in the lobby) .. and POOF!!!!!!

My internet connection shot into cyberspace and i LOST everything!!! Anyhoo .. BEREA College has an AMAZING AMERICAN STORY to tell .. (google it ... BEREA COLLEGE .. BEREA, KENTUCKY!)

One by one .. the kids all ambled down to the lobby and we had a scrumptious breakfast .. had a most fascinating waitress who regaled us with stories of her life and ancestors!!!

Then .. off for some SHOPPIN'!!! I couldn't believe it when HANK picked out a huge, tall rusty sunflower (metal yard sculpture) and wanted it too!!!!! (WHO IS THIS MAN AND WHAT DID HE DO WITH MY HUSBAND?????) I swear .. Kentuckians are the friendliest people in America! We all had wonderful conversations with customers or sales people in about every shoppe we went to!

I got some teas and kentucky 'spoon bread' mix and jams (gracie bought me kentucky made raspberry jam and kentucky raspberry scone mix!). I also found an adorable little 'tin' tea set in pinks and blues that i got for Sofia's tiny tea table that will seat 2 one year olds and 2 two year olds at her party!

a few hours later .. and we found ourselves HUNGRY again .. so we stopped at a cute little 'coffee and tea house cafe' .. for yummy sammies and sodas.

MORE shopping after lunch .. we met the MOST fascinating older gentleman .. who was dressed impeccably and was working at a cute shoppe. Turns out he was a retired PROFESSOR from Berea College (taught the OLD TESTAMENT). He was an incredible source for the quest for Knowledge .. Grace and I very much enjoyed talking to him. I know Hank and Charles would have loved to have met him too .. but they had taken a 'break' and were sitting outside at a side-walk cafe having another cup of coffee!

When the shoppes all closed .. (and by the way .. these shoppes and artisans studios are all right there in the heart of the campus ... as is the Boone Tavern.) .. well, we headed back to our rooms for a quick shower .. with plans to go to PICKIN' on the PORCH in town.

Thunder clouds had formed and the sound of 'rumblings' could be heard in the distance. When we got to the Arts Center where the pickin' was to take place .. no one was there .. soooo .. we decided to just head for dinner. We stopped at the Visitor Center to ask about some restaurants in the area .. and 'lo and behold' ... pickin' and strummin' was comin' from inside!!! They had simply moved the PICKINS here .. so we all squeezed into the very crowded little room .. knee to knee and elbow to elbow . .not only to the people who had come to hear the music .. but i was practically sitting in the laps of the musicians! It was GRANDE! Albeit somewhat short-lived .. i was having so much fun .. i wasn't playing close attention to those 'ole blood sugars .. had to go to the car to do a quick 'measure' .. and i was in the low 50's .. sooo .. we all headed for dinner! Ended up at the CRACKER BARREL .. not the BEREA ambiance i would have liked .. but OH MY! more TREASURES! gosh! i just LOVE their gift shoppe! i got more yummy candies for sofia's tea party .. and a 'princess' prize for sofia. Grace and I just ooooohed and aaaaahed over the ADORABLE halloween costumes! I can see that Sofia and Lucas' 'costume trunk' will be overflowing with Cracker Barrel costumes in the future!

Of course, we sat on the 'front porch' of Cracker Barrel after dinner and played some CHECKERS while sitting in their big rocking chairs!

Grace and Charles had to be 'on the road again' ... EARLY the next morning as they were heading for both a 'wedding' and a 'cousin's reunion' up in Michigan and had many more hours to travel. After breakfast and hugs and kisses .. they went north .. and hank and i lingered awhile. I did a little more antiquing .. and hit lots of the 'hand-crafted' shoppes .. i don't always get to those on my trips to BEREA and found this to be lots of fun! AND YEP! i did find some more treasures!!!

We ambled home with a few 'prizes' and lots of warm memories!

True Friends, Frannie

Wow! It sounds like you and a great time. I love that area of Kentucky myself. Two of my uncles attended Berea College and many of my high school teachers did also. It is a great school and has a fantastic artist community.

Oh, Frannie, you have brought back such wonderful memories! DH and I stopped at the Boone Tavern in Berea one year on our way back from Hickory to buy some furniture. It was snowy and wonderful outside, and warm and wonderful inside! Thanks for sharing, it sounds like you had a wonderful time.

You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands - You shall be happy and it shall be well with you. -Psalm 128.2
