Well, I'm not going to say I'm a belly dancer, per se, but I do take classes FROM a belly dancer in a barn in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky. It's pretty great, and after being a classically trained dancer for many years, it's the first thing I've found (excercise wise) that I can get behind. Yoga was too boring, and the gym, well, it's the gym. Belly dancing makes me use my mind AND my body, and it's really great because we have live drummers and it's a free for all. Really fun, too!!!

Wow Tasha, You've got me interested. I would consider giving it a try as long as know one could see me. Unless I became very good, lol. And I'm like junebug, I think it would be very good exercise!!!

But see Mikki, the thing with bellydance is that you don't necessarily need coordination, you really just need to move how your body wants and feels to-belly dance is a dance for women made by women to do for other women. It is a dance that expresses the sacredness of woman and her body and the things a woman's body does. it is a dance that cherishes the womb that gives life, breasts that give liquid gold, and the muscles that control it all. it is lovely and like I said before, I am convinced that there is a bellydancer in every woman, because it is a dance for every woman.

Edited to fix spelling

My Mom used to teach belly dancing in my home town! She even taught us kids. Imagine 4 little girls all decked out in harem outfits belly dancing! :)

YouTube ahs a lot of great dancers and some instructional videos as well, for those who miht not want to shellout the big bucks that some of these videos cost. I second all the video suggestions that Lisa made....all excellent. I bring them to the class I teach in case anyone wants some extra class time at home, if you will. they check them out from me.

Probaly a 100 or more of good dvds out there now . :) They have really hit the market over last couple years.Suhalia has great beginner ones that combine the yoga and dance. Fat chance bellydance has some also. And there is also the neena and veena ones --very basic moves .Then the goddess workout series . Good place to buy dvds is on ebay. Your local library probaly has some also for checkout.

My daughter belly dances, and she's been trying to get me to start too. She got me a couple DVDs and CDs and a book. I haven't taken the plunge yet--too many things pressing at work and at home, but I do look forward to it. I'll have to look up the stuff she sent me and post it so you can tell me if it's good or not!

very cute !!!!!! I wish i could of started when i was little. I was in late 20's before i ever did. I have been so happy that in last several years that bellydance music has become more mainstream and easy to find a good selection of.

Its honestly good for your whole body. I combine it with yoga quite often and have become even more flexible that I use to be and I have danced life long as well as having been a cheerleader. believe me I was flexible but I am even more now!

I recommend it during each stage of life but especially pregnancy as it keeps things loose, not tense and helps you really connect with your body during it's growth and the babe's growth.

Grace, our 5 year old, LOVES to dance. Here is her Saidii drum solo that we put up on YouTube:

She is actually rather good and loves it to boot. Zoe is starting to enjoy it as well and needs to wear a hip belt when I am dancing. I firmly believe there is a bellydancer in every woman!

I did in my twenties. It's great exercise and believe me, my husband appreciated that particular form of dance. Oh, and he was the ONLY one who saw it performed after we got together. Somehow, he never got so involved in my ballet lessons...
