Posted - Aug 19 2007 : 2:08:14 PM the gravity involved makes this impossible, were Mars close enough to look as big as our Moon, we would surely crash into each other. I didn't read any of the snopes or factorfiction stories behind it, but I am sure it may look nice and big in a powerful telescope....Did no one play gravity on the computer in middle school?
Earth's mass: http://www.britannica.com/ebi/article-199814 Mars' mass: http://www.mcwdn.org/SPACE/Mars.html
Were it close enough to us and move faster than our moon to appear as our moon does. it would have to be closer than our moon as it has less of a gravity(11%) compared to the earth than the moon(17%)does. Chances are, if it, in it's continuous orbit around the sun, we going to have a transit that looked like our moon, it would crash into us.
It's plain physics.
ETA: that sounded snottier than I intended it to. I just really loath hoax emails, so they tend to bring out the logical fact finder in me, and I didn't even need to really fact find sans for providing those links about the mass of Mars and the Earth

A couple pages I looked at said this was a hoax, sorry! It sounds like it will be closer and a bit bigger, but not very much so to the naked eye. But it would have been really neat to see two moons, eh?
