the gravity involved makes this impossible, were Mars close enough to look as big as our Moon, we would surely crash into each other. I didn't read any of the snopes or factorfiction stories behind it, but I am sure it may look nice and big in a powerful telescope....Did no one play gravity on the computer in middle school?

Earth's mass: http://www.britannica.com/ebi/article-199814
Mars' mass: http://www.mcwdn.org/SPACE/Mars.html

Were it close enough to us and move faster than our moon to appear as our moon does. it would have to be closer than our moon as it has less of a gravity(11%) compared to the earth than the moon(17%)does. Chances are, if it, in it's continuous orbit around the sun, we going to have a transit that looked like our moon, it would crash into us.

It's plain physics.

ETA: that sounded snottier than I intended it to. I just really loath hoax emails, so they tend to bring out the logical fact finder in me, and I didn't even need to really fact find sans for providing those links about the mass of Mars and the Earth

Thanks Jo. I'll be looking too. I think if you cross your eyes you can see two. I've been practising. MB

Mary Beth, I am going to go out on August 27th and imagine two moons just for you, it would have been very nice..........

Soon, we'll be able to see our northern lights again, and a winter night sky that feels like you can dip your finger into it! jo

A couple pages I looked at said this was a hoax, sorry! It sounds like it will be closer and a bit bigger, but not very much so to the naked eye. But it would have been really neat to see two moons, eh?
