Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 10:50:11 AM I am having a "Girls Night in the Country" next weekend and am looking for some inexpensive ideas to help make it special. I've invited some ladies from work, almost none of whom have ever been to my house. Although sitting around a campfire (please don't let it be 85 degrees!) is usually entertaining enough for anyone, does anyone have any ideas on some simple games or decorating ideas? Or good tips for making a party like this flow smoothly? Thanks for any and all suggestions! |

Posted - Aug 24 2007 : 03:27:26 AM It was great! Thank you all for your ideas!
The electric lemonade drank out of Ball jars was a big hit. We had hotdogs, beans in the crockpot, potato salad, macaroni salad, s'mores and pudgie pies. It rained off and on so we'd just go in the house and wait it out, then build the fire back up and talk some more!
One of the guests was upset that the final rainfall kept her from having her pudgie pie so one of my friends brought in an electric sandwich maker to work and we had pudgie pies yesterday afternoon at the bank! They were fabulous! We filled them with peanut butter, marshmallow fluff and chocolate. Can't go wrong there! |

Posted - Aug 15 2007 : 10:26:10 AM Hmmm. . .I feel pretty dense! We always make a ring around the fire with the hay bales, but I had never thought to put something OVER them! Ha ha. All these years of people itching. . .

Posted - Aug 13 2007 : 07:00:42 AM Tiffany, there was a photo from MaryJanes Farm event a year or two back, where they had square hay bales arranged in a circle, with rugs/blankets laid over each hay bale for a seat; I thought that was such a neat (and comfortable) way to have a get-together.
Also, don't forget the S'mores! Let us know how it went!

Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 6:43:29 PM Our country get togethers always had the following items on the menu:
Hotdogs & hamburgers Fresh giant tomatoes, sliced Fresh corn on the cob Watermelon slices Homemade handcranked ice cream served with fresh raspberries & blackberries (grandma had her own berry bushes) Lemonade or ice tea with lemon
To make this fresh, just update it a bit by serving:
instead of hotdogs, serve gourmet flavored sausages in wheat hotdog rolls Grill the corn on the grill instead of using the boiling method alternate the tomato slices with purple onion and mozzarella cheese slices, drizzle with olive oil and italian basil
for a game, get one of those ice cream maker balls that you toss around to make the ice cream instead of using a hand crank machine
instead of watermelon slices, try fresh cut chunky fruit salad and serve in a watermelon basket
Instead of lemonade, try margaritas or Sangria wine with fruit slices
Other activities: gathering eggs and playing with the bunnies? bake a pie together? or make biscotti cookies together and then eat them hot out of the oven with coffee and tea berry picking, then making the ice cream? if they are still around, what about catching fireflies?

Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 4:37:53 PM OOOOH....pork and beans (or some sort of beans anyway)...served in the cans with the lid sticking up with a peice of red gingham or bandana fabric tied around it like a kerchief...real cute. I did it once for a western theme thing...you can make the beans more special with sliced scallions and cheese sprinkled on top. Works great with chili too. You heat the beans up and then pour them back into the cans after.

Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 2:04:34 PM Hmmm...maybe the "drink of the night" could be some electric cherry lemonade. I have a recipe for that and we could serve it in ball canning jars and lemonade fits the country and summer. Keep 'em coming ladies! These have all been great ideas! |

Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 1:07:16 PM We always have a campfire Christmas Eve and sing carols. That wouldn't work for your party in August, but since it's a "Country" themed night, maybe some old time cowboy songs would be fun? I am thinking "Home on the Range" and "There's a Hole in the Bucket" and "Oh, Suzanna", etc. We always have the words to the carols printed out for everyone so there's no excuse for someone not to be joining in! There's also a Dutch oven dessert (sweets are a big hit!) of some kind of cobbler. Everyone always loves to get their hands in and help "make" it. Good luck! Sounds like so much fun! If it wasn't 110+ here right now, I would do one, too!

Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 11:10:14 AM That sounds so so fun!! We do campfire things all the time..but mostly with just our family or with cubscouts so not very much like girls night out type stuff. We always have a ghost story telling contest (you could tell your friends ahead of time) and of course s'mores...you could do some gourmet one maybe..lots of fun you could have with the gals and not the little boys!! haha Have fun..I can't wait to see what people come up with for ya in the way of ideas!!

Posted - Aug 11 2007 : 11:07:25 AM Have a "drink of the night" and do some sort of theme. Like since you are doing "Girls Night in the Country" you could maybe find some sort of snack type food and wrap it up in bandanas, so they get a snack and a bandana to wear.
