Posted - Aug 02 2007 : 9:19:39 PM It is such a tragedy! I know the outcome is not good for alot of folks. I have been waiting to hear the report on the bridge crossing that you see next to the one that is fallen??? Have I missed this or are they avoiding reporting the status of that one...Maybe it was built after the way of building changed...I hope so..would love to hear about that other though since the area is now so congested.
I'm just in disbelief of the inspection rating given on that bridge in 2004 and the state didn't close it so it could be fixed!!
The states are avoiding the obvious issues that today the eighteen wheeler truck traffic is much more and carrying much heavier loads in addition to the increased auto traffic..It has to be placing increased pressure on those joints of the older structures.
I hope that the state level officials will REALLY take notice and DO something for a change instead of just talk about how it didn't merit being closed down to cover their butts.
Sorry...just had to vent...too many people losing their lifes unnecessarily!!
...til next time - queenofdreamsz

Posted - Aug 02 2007 : 1:09:32 PM Just heard that Gov Pawlenty said there are three other bridges that could be dangerous and he is going to have them inspected immediately- one is the river bridge from Mn to Osceola WI that goes over the St Croix River. I travel that to work everday day and actually just went over it at lunch to run some lunch home to the kids. Yikes!
So many are still missing... the poor families that are waiting too. OMG so tragic

Posted - Aug 02 2007 : 07:57:19 AM Are you freaking kidding me!? The president is on tv right now. He got on to give a press conference about the bridge and he is using to talk about how much more money he needs.....I feel like throwing a big rock at the tv right now.

Posted - Aug 02 2007 : 07:37:48 AM I'm ok here- a coworker crossed the bridge 15 minutes before its collapse. Been on it a million times myself. Such a tragedy. I know that they have posted stuff to do to help on www.92kqrs.com our local old rock station. The good samaritans have been prevalent in this with so many people helping at the scene, risking their lives for others.
The bridge was built (1965 or 67) to carry approximately 50,000 cars a day. A study was done in 2000 that showed the bridge averaged 130,000 cars a day. I know they did a sweep of all the bridges in the twin cities that night to check them. Will keep y'all posted. Say a prayer or two.

Posted - Aug 02 2007 : 05:55:33 AM What an awful tragedy. I heard on the news this morning that in 2005 the bridge had been deemed 'deficient' by federal inspectors. But then an on camera official insisted that the problems were only 'cosmetic'. I hope this wasn't something brushed off or taken lightly by people who should have known better. Bridge collapse has always been one of my greatest fears. I live in a river city and my dh works across the river. If I even get stuck in traffic on a bridge, I get panicky and scared.

Posted - Aug 02 2007 : 04:53:05 AM Praying for all you Farmgirls and your friends and family. You are in our prayers here too.
About 4 years ago we drove out to Nebraska for vacation and I have always wanted to move to Minnesota so we drove up through some of the towns and we too crossed that bridge twice. So very sad and tragic.
Great big moose {{{hugs}}} headed your way!

Posted - Aug 01 2007 : 5:41:40 PM My family and I are okay, we were not on the bridge. We are freaking out about all of our friends and co-workers who may have been though. Cell phone lines are jammed and we are glued to the Web for info (since we are sans TV).
Like Tasha, I've been on that bridge about a million times a day for years. I used to live two blocks from it and go to school at the U of MN. Un-freaking-believable.
