Posted - Jul 27 2007 : 11:16:06 PM Carol Sue, here is a link to the article in "THE NATION" http://www.thenation.com/doc/20070709/watch_your_foodometer where I found the video link originally.
Everyone, While I as in You-tube, I clicked on another link and eventually found a 7-part series of clips from the movie "The Future of Food" which is a really scary movie.
Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YvLBMXC_D0Q for the first one - this doesn't affect just people who grow food, it will affect everyone who EATS!
It starts out a little slowly and with stuff we mostly all know -- but by the middle of the 2nd clip I was hooked - it eventually talks about Monsanto and patenting seed and how it may be possible we won't be able to save our own seed in the future, and how big companies are now (in the last few years) patenting gene sequences that are naturally occuring - NOT just ones they developed, but even seeds in heirloom seed banks.

Posted - Jul 27 2007 : 1:39:02 PM that was great information .. i do try to buy from local farmers and produce stands .. but caught myself buying some DOLLAR STORE toothpaste and a few edible goodies .. until my daughter told me to READ THE LABEL and see where it is coming from! Even our 'controls' are not the safest .. but good grief .. imagine how poorly this is handled in other countries. NO MORE DOLLAR STORE snacks for me!!!
i've never visited U-TUBE before .. that was interesting. thanks for sending it along.

I've been reading more and more about this. I've also tried to take some steps:
I've had a garden for a while, but now I'm working on freezing and canning more of what we get out of it, so in the winter I can eat more of what came out of my backyard and less of what was shipped across the country. I've been checking out a lot of local farm stores and farmers markets it's amazing what is out there when you really start looking around for it. Jennifer |

Posted - Jul 27 2007 : 11:58:48 AM My mom just sent me an article from CNN about a woman who lived for a year without buying anything from China. She was most surprised and challenged by how much of our food comes from there (and other countries!). I love that I am surrounded by farm fields and can have lots of local food easily.
Did anyone else hear anything about this food recall? I don't watch TV, so sometimes I miss a news story.

Posted - Jul 27 2007 : 10:01:02 AM In the last year we have really dropped the amount of pre-processed food that we eat. I really think it makes a difference in how we feel and the amount of energy that we have. Plus then we don't have to deal with packaging materials and the shipping energy. I mean we still do end up buying our fair share, but I am trying to learn how to can my own food and how to cook with more fresh foods and such instead of relying on store canned items. Lots to learn!
