This is a Michigan based group, don't know if other states have their own, but their products and ideas are ones that anyone could use no matter where they're from. Just thought it was a neat site that some of you might enjoy checking out.

My stepmom and her husband have had a few cattle for years and the grandson they/she's raising has a few steers he is going to fatten before they butcher and sell. Almost worth buying another freezer to buy from them. I'm seriously considering it. I'm thinking the per pound price will be about what I pay for ground beef on sale. Have to nearly take out a bank loan to buy a steak anymore! I wait until they're on sale for $6# and that's still adds up fast.

My niece will be showing her prospect beef on Monday and selling him on Wednesday. I can't wait to go up and see her show, she has so much fun getting ready for the fair and doing the show even though she's a "city kid". I have a feeling that she's going to grow up to be a regular farm girl with as much time as she spends at our parent's farm and as much as she loves it.
It's also fun to watch all of the other kids at the fair too, especially the ones that you can tell have really done a lot of the work with their animals. There are some known ones who have more money so they people that work on their parent's farms that do a lot of the work with their animals and that's just sad to me.
Anyway...lol...yes, those livestock sales are a great way to eat local :)

Hmm I need to figure out when the 4-H auction will be around here. It sounds like that might be the way to get nice meat for a cheaper price. I don't normally eat pork but I have been thinking of buying from a repectable source to try and get myself back into it. Maybe I should buy from you Brenda! I know Doug would love it if I actually brought some pork home for once! LOL

I was amazed at the last Jr. Livestock auction that the pork was going as low as 90 cents a pound. For wonderful natural grown hogs. The prize winning hogs went for more, but for the most part the meat tastes the same . . . once they are butchered they are all pretty much equal as long as they were grown on grain, soy, etc. The beef prices were just as amazing and it is sooo much better than the store bought. And, another benefit of buying meat this way is that you can specify cuts to the butcher so that you don't get a lot of things you don't want. It benefits the kids, the farmers and the people lucky enough to eat it. I think more people just need to be reminded of this way of "shopping."

I love farmers markets, going to orchards etc. In fact it was in supporting the cherry orchard that I had my "broken face" accident on the ladder 10 days ago! LOL! I might stick to low growers like Strawberries from now on! We raise hogs and trade for beef. A great way to buy meat locally is to attend auctions at Jr. Livestock Shows. It not only supports 4-H and FFA kids in your area, it also gives you a great value on meat that is grown without all the chemicals. Once we stop growing our own, that will definitely be the direction we will be going. But then I am a sucker for kids too . . . can't tell you how many little dixie cups of warm lemonade I have bought from kids doing lemonade stands over the years!

That sounds great! I love this time of year when the farmers market is open, such good produce. My parents raise beef right now and I can't tell you how much better their meat is than what I have bought in the store, they also buy animals from the 4-H livestock sale and they are also much better meat. It's also great to think about supporting local people instead of CEOs and presidents of companies that have no regard for others.

Thanks for sharing the link! I think it is great to eat more and more locally. I am really trying to find places to pick seasonal fruits that grow wild around here and am talking to several ranchers about buying half cows, lambs and such when we get a bit of money so all of our meat will be local as well.
