Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 06:31:55 AM Ladies, please give me your opinions! Is this lamp ugly enough to enter in the (locally) famous "Ugly Lamp" contest in the Kentucky State Fair next month? This contest was started and is sponsored by Lynn Winter, who owns a local restaurant, Lynn's Paradise Cafe. The decor there is totally kitsch and weird lamps abound.Jonni, you've been there and you KNOW what I mean! The first time I entered a lamp, in the early days of the contest, my entry came in third! I got a beautiful rosette ribbon(still have it) and a gift certificate to the restaurant! Lynn got the lamp for the lamp museum. The color is kind of a minty green(haven't cleaned it yet) and the shade actually MATCHES! So, I'm asking: Is it a contender?

Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 7:11:13 PM Ugly lamps have become beautiful again! There are many people who would love to have that lamp in what is now called "mid-century" decorated homes. In plain language, that means some people honestly like the 50's stuff! :)
Hmmm.....I can still remember my mom having those types of lamps, so you may have a winner there; that is unless someone comes in with a lamp made of a stuffed bass or something.

Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 08:20:31 AM How funny! I had never heard of this before! I think your lamp could be a contender, even though in it's own way it is fun and cute! LOL Good Luck!

Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 07:13:25 AM Hey Janice! I DO SO know what you mean! Lynn is a hoot, right? I saw on her webpage that she was holding the contest--I don't have any ugly lamps to enter though.
I think your lamp is ugly, and bordering right smack on a little tacky, if that's what you want to hear However, someone could still beat yours if they are (un)lucky enough to have one of those Bullfighter figure lamps with the retro fiberglass shades, or the really inappropriate "ethnic" lady lamp with her decollatage showing while in the throws of ecstasy--(also with a fiberglass shade). Those are UGLY.
I am crossing fingers for you!!!!

Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 06:47:06 AM Well, Lorna, I kind of like the kitschy aspect of it myself. And the one I took third place with, I liked that one, too. It was a green(jadeite green) spanish dancer man with lots of gold trim. This one is green, too. I almost have to like it myself before I can 'get behind' it...LOL. And I think that the fact that it still has the original shade adds gives it a nice 'ensemble' look.

Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 06:46:59 AM I think it's a contender. Your lamp is right up there with the others shown on the UglyLamps site. Go for it! Good luck!
