Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 6:02:43 PM Hey Moscow/Spokane (and everywhere in between) who wants to go Garnet hunting!
Come on! You _know_ you want to!! Don't try and deny it! I mean- whats better than spending the day playing in the dirt and mud with rocks and coming home with treasure! Honest to goodness treasure!
Doug, his dad, Nora and I followed MapQuest's intructions (bad idea...a guy must have written them ) So we ended up in the middle of nowhere. It was an amazingly beautiful drive-but no garnets. So next time I am going to follow the direction that are listed on the Emerald Creek Garnet site website.
Please, please come with me! I think it would be so much fun! And it is something that the whole family could do!

I know _exactly_ what you are going through! I am so sorry that you are not feeling so good. But the kiddos are certainly worth it in the end, eh? I'm saying this after I just spent and hour trying to get Nora to nurse! Oh my gosh she is having a rough night too!
One thing that I found to help is to apply a cool wash cloth to the forehead and the back of the neck. Also make sure you are drinking more fluids that you think you need. Being even a little dehydrated make the Morning Sickness worse. And depending on how you handle it- try adding a little fiber into your water just to give your stomach something to "work" on. It might help to keep you from getting sick long enough to be able to get a little bit of food in. And if all else fails- eat ice cream and nothing but ice cream :)

Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 5:03:31 PM That sounds so fun. My grandmother loved to dig for stones. She would go all over. Her favorite was opals. I remember when I was younger she would bring out her jewelry box and I would look at all the beautiful stones. Such great memories!

Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 2:04:57 PM Alee.....you are too funny! I've dug garnets before and Montana sapphires, both when I was a little girl. My dad worked at the Emerald Creek Garnet mine for real.
Also I have news, especially for the farmgirls near the 'forgotten corner' of WA(I really like that JoAnn=). There is going to be a Country Festival at an old farmhouse about a mile from me on Hwy 12. I don't have many details yet but it will be on Saturday, August 25. More info to follow.

Posted - Jul 18 2007 : 04:38:45 AM Oh how fun! Wish I was closer, I'd go! We went gem hunting in TN last year at a ruby mine. Didn't find anything except a garnet laying on seat next to me. We do have 200 lbs. of DIRT in our garage waiting to be cleaned - hopefully will have some ruby's in it.
Hey! I could have a nice ring out there just waiting to be excavated!

Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 9:37:23 PM Ronna- come North!! I would love to meet you in person and I bet it would be a ton of fun!
The best thing about Idaho garnets is that most of them are star garnets which are only found in... Idaho and India! How cool is that?

Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 8:30:55 PM I hate mapquest, it's always goofy. If you look at a US map, Reno is actually farther west than Los Angeles. Mapquest told my sister to go I-80 to San Francsico/Sacramento to get on I-5 and head south and they would be there in 6 hours. Not on a bet. She and her even dumber husband didn't want to listen to me and that's how they went. I've driven that so many times it's not even funny...but they just knew that I was wrong and mapquest was right. grrrrr. About 15 years ago, my sister and I went gem hunting in NoCarolina (she lives in TN). Found several different good sized stones that we had polished and some set too. There are a couple of opal mines in NoNevada. One up by the Oregon/Idaho border. A man showed me one he dug recently. It's huge, about an inch by four inches and beautiful. If you know what to look for, since most look like just rocks before they're cut and or polished, it's really fun. Wish I could go with you, maybe I can make it happen someday. |

Posted - Jul 17 2007 : 7:47:09 PM Yes, we can wait until it cools off some- It closes October 1st. September is full for me, between the wedding and the farm show in Spokane. But it was actually quite cool on the mountain today. So just let me know when you want to go. I will probably try to go soon!
